Now I know it’s preseason (and the coaches poll at that) but I found it interesting that the ACC leads all of college football with 5 top 20 teams (4,13,16,17,19) especially considering how lowly the conference is viewed by the media at times.
The SEC leads all conferences with 6 teams (1,3,7,21,23,24) but only have 3 top 20 teams to show for it whcih is surprising considering they are always touted as the top/toughest conference. I’m fact the Big ten also has more top 20 teams with 4 (2,6,14,20) the big 12 matches that with 4 as well (9,10,11,18).
Not that means much at this point (will know better when the AP comes out on the 15th) but I just found it interesting how the conference everyone views as the weakest is starting out as ranked the “strongest” based on this metric. UNC could also make a case for the top 25 if they can put a few moving parts together as well as UVA if Tony Elliott can get the ball rolling with them returning a top QB in Armstrong.
Again, this is the preseason and all the teams listed above in the ACC ALL have a tough game within the first 4 weeks of the season so how good each team really is (and if they deserve their ranking) will be put to the test almost immediately.
I genuinely believe the ACC has the most depth when it comes to quality teams around the conference then it’s ever had.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see 5/6 teams FINISH in the top 25 as well as 3/4 in the top 15.
