A tidbit on TE recruiting

“For a while things looked like they were cooling with Cartwright. Then the staff blanked on every other target and now they’re scrambling cause Deroche is kinda mid.” - what Dmoney really wanted to say
Not speaking for D$, but I don't think he would describe Deroche as mid.

Deroche is a flyer upside pick more than anything. He's not expected to start or contribute right away, so it's a bet on his physical traits.

He has the potential to be a Njoku type TE, IF he develops & maturates into what his athletic profile could be.

Will he? No one knows.

But, sometimes you take players in your class & stash them away for a couple seasons in hopes that they can spawn into realized potential.

It doesn't always work, but every class has prospects like that.

Mid, raw, high upside, whatever term you’d like to use. They clearly want to up the talent and production at the position and it’s hard to say Deroche will do that. He’s more wait and see. They are hunting for a guy that can contribute early and have yet to get him.

bingo. Should always take a flyer or two on guys that posses those rare athletic abilities / have the athletic profile

whereas with previous staffs, we were taking flyers on guys who did not have those twitchy / freaky athletic traits

Lets see some plays to the TE in big moments or use Lofton as a YAC machine. Block and dump off. Yes we did well with Arroyo but its been a slog otherwise. Lashlee was a beast at scheming up the TE.
Lofton just looks out of shape all the time. The opposite of Arroyo

lol… where did anyone say anything about last year, or the fact that the staff wants to take 2 TE’s this year? We’ve struck out on all the top tight end targets so far. Doesn’t mean they still won’t land a guy, but I like the way Dmoney tries to throw the smoke screen.

He does throw smoke screens at times, but this isn't one of them.

He's never said we weren't after two tight ends.

Again, nowhere in my posts have I said we weren’t after 2 TEs…

Cartwright was always a major target. He’s visited several times.

Dollar was a premier target and a miss. I don’t think it really impacted the other guys because we were always a long shot there.

The timeline is that Cartwright looked like the most likely TE commit for months (check prior Banks) and then Karhoff heated up because Cartwright came to his spring visit in a cast. We did some digging, the price point exceeded our evaluation on Karhoff, and the medicals looked clean on Cartwright.

Cartwright’s other OVs are LSU, Oregon, Michigan, Michigan State (he’s a legacy) and a TE factory in Stanford. He is a hot commodity.

I think @DMoney had TE 2 (a possible senior eval or now maybe Cartwright??) as part of the 20? I may be wrong...

I personally think we are in the 21 to 23 range (23 may be pushing it)…I've just heard the small class thing other times and we go over that number.
Cartwright and kid from miami springs.

Good looking athlete but it looked like he was playing against middle school guys half the time. Certainly looked like there is enough talent and size there to project as a College TE.

Jeremy Shockey > DeMarcus DeRoche > Alex Bauman

Let's resurrect TE-U.

This has been a concern of mine for years.
