For all of the clamor over Butch Davis what did he do so much different and better than AG? Both recruited well with Butch having the edge. Butch had much better talent to start his tenure at the U. Butch was 31-15 through his first 4 years, and AG is 24-17 with 8 games to play. This is not to promote AG but Butch was not much better coaching the talent when all can agree he had more to work with. So please stop with the Butch Davis Campaign! And stop the high profile candidates that are nothing more than a pipe dream for this university.
Look at the landscape of realistic candidates based on what the U is willing to pay, and you have to strongly consider IF those few candidates want to come to Miami. We love the school but not everyone share our same affection. Open your eyes people......and get out of the past!
Butch had to deal with the loss of 31 scholarships over his first 3 years as head coach. What Golden has had to deal with in comparison is peanuts. Butch also showed a willingness to adapt and an ability to grow as a HC (this was his first stint as a head man). Butch fired an underwhelming DC. At this point, Golden essentially is an underwhelming DC. How many of Butch's assistants rose to prominent NFL and college coaching positions?
So Butch is a better recruiter. But not marginally better. Leaps and bounds better at evaluating, acquiring, and DEVELOPING talent than Golden, and arguably has a better track record than any one else in college football:

Perhaps the most amazing thing that I heard Thursday night came from NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, who relayed something that Butch Davis told him. On the heels of Jonathan Cooper going No. 9 overall, Mayock pointed out that the Tar Heel guard was the 33rd first-rounder that Davis had recruited during his 10 years as a college head coach (at Miami and UNC). That number would swell to 34 when DT Sly Williams was picked later in the first round.
........
For comparison sake, in Nick Saban's last dozen years as a college head coach (at Alabama and at LSU), 22 of his recruits have gone on to become first-round picks.
While I agree to a point....waiting for the NCAA as they dragged thier feet for 2 years was punishment in of itself... at least Butch knew what he was working with.
The program was in wait and see mode and that hurt a lot....
Not defending Golden, but their are similarties
Gosh of you guys sound like people who would stalk ex-girlfriends til.............well whatever. Now, let's use the melon sitting idle on top of shoulders. First you have to get past the retreads. Now, for everyone saying McNeill is a bad choice let me ask you this; would you want Kevin Sumlin? Absolutely, and all of you take him in a heartbeat.
Now, look at Kevin Sumlin coaching path and compare it to McNeill's. I know, I know, I know, very little difference up until KSum get the big break at TA&M. The biggest difference is TA&M's admin, AD, Alumni, and fanbase had the gumption to make the call...............and now they're killing recruiting, beating the Alabamas, and may be in the first ever playoffs. And the U? Nah, we don't want McNeill (much like KSumlin) because he's not high-profile. We need a big name coach. News flash: The University of Miami is not paying $4m for the big name coach. If Butch can come here, recruit, develop, and get players drafted, but pull an ol' Butch Davis in big games you same pundits will be calling for his head. Some of you are ridiculous.
If you need more: Who was Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erikson, and Raisin Head Coker before Miami. McNeill has the goods and The U can make him big!

Do you want Skip Holtz?
Because IMO his coaching path is most comparable to Ruffin. I'd say what Holtz did at ECU was significantly more impressive, and laid the foundation for Ruffin.

Yep.
At this stage, Ruffin could be Skip, Leavitt, Hoke or Golden just as easily as Sumlin, Meyer or Kelly.
He's actually a former D-Coordinator and runs a 3-4. He has done some great things at ECU.

He's actually one of the most likeable, energetic guys in football. I think closing players and parents in South Florida would be a great strength of his.We need some whos a beast on the trail.....we losin to many elite guys. No thanks
I quoted you but I'm actually responding more to Dwinstitles. Honestly, I don't care if our head coach is a beast on the recruiting trail. Let him get some **** assistant coaches that are beasts. They do most of the legwork anyway. Plus, let me tell you something. If we get a head coach that knows his **** and has UM playing an exciting brand of football, we'll be more than ok. Look across college football and the NFL and while you will see the obvious studs from South Florida, you'll also see guys that have you thinking, "where in the **** did he come from?" There is enough talent in South Florida that if UM has a head coach that can actually freakin coach, we'll be pretty **** good. just my .02
Edit: Just want to clarify that I don't have a clue who the ECU coach is. I'm just speaking in general terms.

His defensive unit can run circles around ours....light years better. He was on the staff as an OC I believe at App State when they beat Michigan that year.

A lot of what u guys r saying is good stuff, but sfla recruiting is another animal. Look at AG he just recently adapted to it and it took him four years too. He hasn't recruited well at all with kids leaving that could of helped him this year and last. I'm tired of giving the keys to someone who has done things elsewhere and claiming he's a god, ECU probably takes football serious in there conference so who knows yea they beat some good teams but miami is another animal. We deal with the sec down in sfla and dudes like him ain't ready for the dirty ****. I know what Butch would do.
Miami has been making mistakes of recruiting athletes that can't play football, Butch sees kids and sees things that only ole nick Saban can see. I trust he will surround himself with good character staff and guys that do great on the X's and O's. He already knows how sfla works, we can't afford to wait till the new coach gets used to it. We will fall further down if we start from scratch, get Butch period it's the easiest and smartest thing to do. I don't trust anybody else because the administration will handcuff them.
When ECU plays a real team, NOT from the Coastal, they get blown out. Do not want.

I'm not advocating for McNeil. I'm just saying he's got a great personality and is very likeable and energetic. He'd do well recruiting down here. Clearly, Butch would be the much safer hire.
I don't think Ruffin's the kind of guy chasing the dollar anyway. ECU gave him his big break, he loves his alma mater and would most likely be happy coaching there the rest of his career. I doubt he'd even leave.
They are 3-1. Who absultely PWNed and ourtcoached them?
Anyone can beat dullards from VT or bagman Fedora. Even Golden beats those clowns.
