The Gator fans also lie about the song "American Girl" being written about a girl who committed suicide in Gainesville, which is simply not true.

Tom Petty moved to Los Angeles in 1974 with his first band, Mudcrutch. Three of the five members of Mudcrutch went on to become the Heartbreakers. Tom wrote the song in Los Angeles, it was inspired by Los Angeles.
