So as the #Canes go into spring practice this upcoming week, as I discussed with DMoney on the CanesInsight podcast, I think the 2026 offense has to be better and more explosive on a consistent basis.
I looked back at our box-scores of the Miami playoff games and broke down the scoring by quarters and halves. Now, this doesn't tell the whole story, admittedly. What's that old phrase: ''lies, **** lies.... and statistics'?
At Kyle Field you had winds that impacted the offense, and in Ohio St an NFL defense. And when you get deep into the playoffs you most likely aren't just putting up 40-points routinely I get it. Also, this Miami squad just didn't have that threat on the perimeter that was going to consistently take the top off the defense, and Beck wasn't great when he took deep shots. I think that limited Shannon Dawson. (and I want to make this clear, this post is not a knock on him)
But here's the scoring breakdown during the playoff run:
6- scoreless quarters (2 scoreless halves vs A@M and Indiana)
3- quarters of 3 points
4- quarters of 7 points (Keionte Scott had a defensive TD vs the Buckeyes, in what was a 14 point second quarter in the Cotton Bowl
3- quarters of 14 points
So that's 9 quarters in the playoffs where UM scored three or less points. Again, game flow may have dictated low scoring games. But this does confirm my feeling that during this run we needed a bit more offensively. Just about every game during this run was a tight, tense, one-possession game (Miami scored a late TD to make it a 10 point game vs Ohio State, while they were up 17-14). Throughout this playoff, this defense allowed Miami to win games of this nature -- till the last one
Last year Miami ranked 30th nationally in pts per game at 31.6 pts per game. Decent, but definitely not 2024 and not close enough to being elite. Ive said for a few years now, that the goal should always be to average around 37-38 points a game, as that points you in the top quarter of college football.
I really think that an emphasis has to be put on having more explosive plays that can instantly flip games(and I know a lot of that will have to do with an Oline that will be reconstructed by Alex Mirabel). Im curious to see the new additions to the roster (Mensah of course, and the new additions at WR and TE).
