Bad things happen when you divorce consequence from action. They knew the rules, hopefully they'll also get an earful from their teammates.
I think you can still punish after the game and show there are consequences. Like I said, it's as easy as the head coach telling the team that Player X and Y appear to have f#cked up royally but the circumstances are still being looked into and in the interest of justice, they will play until such time as the facts are clearly established. Wait until after the Bama game and suspend them for App State, Michigan State and Central Connecticut. A 3 game suspension is a huge kick in the nuts and sends a message that actions have consequences. However, a 3 game suspension against lesser opponents punishes the individual players much more than a 1 game suspension against Bama, where the entire team suffers because those players are very needed.
