A couple of thoughts

All day yesterday I saw OCs go into their bag for specials on short yardage, red zone, and overtime play calls. Different formations, shifts, misdirection, etc. in year 3 I have seen maybe 2 really good play designs by Dawson. One was 2 years ago against A&M where he brought George in motion and ended up wheeling him back out at the snap for an easy walk in TD. I haven’t even seen that play since. Last night we come out on that 4th and 1 in a shotgun set. The initial camera angle showed they had 3 DL lined up over the C and Gs with 3 LBs stacked 3-4 yards right behind them. Of course we got shut down. You’re not blocking 6 with 3. If you see that as an OC do you not burn a TO or audible out of it?
Let's take for granted for a moment that Dawson is never going to be a clever play designer or even sequencer.

He comes from the Mumme school where its more about spacing and pacing. Getting your play makers the ball with room to maneuver through simplicity and numbers.

Within that context though, It is absolutely disastrous to our approach to ever force the issue like that. I also don't put this all on Dawson when we have a 23yo semi-pro QB.

To paraphrase the late great pirate captain, If all of their guys are in one place, you get the ******* ball to a different one.

We blitz’d more to get Bain more one on ones since Mesidor was injured and not playing.

Ppl on this site say “we never adjust” then when we do adjust they complain.

Stanford TE dropped a few and the passes for off target as a result of the PRESSURE that was being brought.

______
Offense didn’t look great but I did see us mix in more RPOs on early downs which will help to slow down the Safeties and LB who’ve been crashing down super aggressively on our run game.

Yes more creativity is desired but if Beck and can consistently hit on the RPOs without turning it over we will see a much more consistent outcome in both the run and pass game.
The blitzing picked up against FSU.

We won by 5 touchdowns.
Yes but we didn't break their will.

We didn't make them remember it next week, let alone next year.

Their children should be born knowing our dominance.

That's the standard.

Because my life is awesome. We won 42-7 and some of you beta bi.tc.hes (yup I'm looking at you) would rather focus on how horrible we are at 6-1 after a 42-7 blowout win. I got laid after the game and it only cost me about 4 minutes of sleep cuz IDGAF about being Peter North or Johnny Sins. My short game was amazing. I was efficient. It wasn't a blow out, but I did blow.

I have discussed the first half. It stunk. Run game was unimaginative (again). We made some dumb mistakes. We missed a FG and didn't convert a (couple?) 4th downs. Had we made the FG and converted and gone on to score a TD, we would've been up 17-7 at the half.....and you still would've complained. You are part of The Faction. Enjoy being unhappy. I might get laid again.
I hope u don’t think ur cool for typing this. U got to be on the older side typing some lame shii like this 😂😂😂. Nobody gives af about your life, this about the X’s and O’s of football.

Back to football, wat place are we in the ACC? does this scheme hold up against a good team, equal talent and good coaching? Regardless of how cool u think ur life is, 6-1 don’t mean shii when the season can potentially be 16 games long. Injuries, red flags, and tendencies can become a problem as the season goes on.

This is what u look like typing that lame shii on here. 😂😂😂

Post wasn’t directed at you directly. More this bipolar *** board.
Ive never believed Mirabal or Mario are "meddling" in the offense because like I said watch all things canes football related so when we hired Dawson I watched just about all his games from Houston and i can tell you there isn't much difference between the offense at Houston and the offense at miami other than I saw more 4 wide receiver sets at Houston. Now he's calling more runs here but the always running up the middle, getting conservative in the second half of games, wr screens galore its all there when you watch his time at Houston

I’d love for us to come out next week, run tempo, a bunch of RPOs, sweeps, off tackle runs, seam routes to TE’s off P/A, and other stuff we’d never do. All scripted to feed off the looks we’re giving them. Come out punch a team that is badly out talented right in the mouth. Go up by 2-3 TDs in the first half. Instead we’ll shorten the game. Get 4 possessions in the first half. Come away with maybe 10 points in the first half and wonder why we’re in a dogfight against a team that has lost to Baylor, TCU, and Wake Forest.

I won’t talk too much about the offense. To me it’s still a train wreck. Nothing was fixed last night. The success we had running was largely due to effort by the backs and sloppy tackling by Stanford. Our use of tempo is the exception not the norm and I would be surprised if we used it more often.

The passing attack is perplexing. We haven’t seen Tony Johnson or Josh Moore in weeks and all of a sudden they’re out there making plays. Did they all of a sudden become good again? Maybe Moore might be up and down as a freshman but what about Johnson? Hes a 5th year senior with a solid track record. Did we just figure out we could put him on the outside? Is Marion this years Sam Brown? I just don’t see it with him but yet he’s out there getting primary targets.

Enough about our 1970s offense. I wanted to talk more about the defense. Again, stat wise it looks very good. And some things got cleaned up as the game went on.

My first beef, why did we all of a sudden become a blitz happy unit? Before FSU we would bring it every once in a while but now it seems like it’s a 100% thing? Let’s be honest. Stanford didn’t have the personnel to compete. But the plays were there. Their TEs dropped 3 maybe 4 passes that would have extended drives. Even more perplexing is our use of long blitzes knowing offenses are trying to get the ball out as fast as possible. Against a good unit they’re going to simply just fill the void created by the blitz. LVille did it to us a bunch. And I’d think Maryland will have a big day exploiting that next week. Will be a matchup issue for us, maybe not as bad as Bell was, but he’ll present issues.

Second beef is having Bain lining up wide. Again, knowing the QB is going to try and get the ball out fast why would we make his distance to the QB greater? I saw he spent more time over the tackle in the second half and it looked like we had more success with it.

All in all a good effort defensively once they woke up.
I agree with a lot of this and I truly believe Dawson is a prisoner to Mario’s philosophy in certain games and if not most games. Even after a loss we decided Stanford wasn’t good enough to go outside a vanilla plan which is mind boggling to me. Your $4M qb threw 4 picks the week before. It is imperative you get him back in rhythm for the remaining stretch of games. They decide to tempo and spread it around a bit and what do you know we start marching down the field.
Dawson said it last week he wants to run more plays and I am now convinced that was a tell/shot out to Mario.

Was going to go back and watch his old games myself. I've been wondering that since last year. Same up the middle runs all game long, getting more conservative as the game goes on if we have the lead. I saw that Dawson changed it up a little in the second half last night. But overall ridiculously predictable.

I'm actually relieved it's not Mario or Mirabal. If it's just Dawson, there's hope things will change at least.

You’re missing my point. Our offense requires way too much to be executed for it to be successful against what was essentially a G5 team. Nothing is designed to be easy.

Look at what we need to do to score inside the 10 then go and watch some of the other games from around the country. OCs are pulling stuff out that has guys walking in. We need to play bully ball against Stanford and need Fletcher to run people over to score. That’s not a long term recipe for success.
This offense would probably get blanked by Ohio st

Texas was down 10 in the 4th.

Alabama was down 8 in the 4th

Virginia needed OT against UNC

Louisville was in a dogfight against BC

Oregon was only up 14-0 in the fourth against WISCONSIN!!!

USF blew a 17 point 4th quarter lead.

SMU lost to Wake Forest

We won by 5 touchdowns. Try and enjoy it.

Come on man. It sprinkled a little bit in first half. It was mostly dry. Certainly not enough to effect play calling.
It rained pre-game and on/off (sometimes hard) during the whole game. The field was slick and guys were slipping all over the place. The uncovered fans were all soaked. If you weren't at the game STFU. If you were, then you must have spent most of the game in the AMEX lounge watching on TV. In the postgame on WQAM Beck mentioned the rain affecting plays several different times.

Because it was 7-7 at halftime. Our offense is designed that we have to outplay everyone much more than we should have to. We have no designed easy plays that everyone else seem to be able to run. **** that TD by Lyle was a great individual effort. It shouldn’t have to be against a squad like Stanford.
I had similar frustrations but if you actually think about it, we only punted once.

We had 10 drives.

We scored 6 times.

We missed a FG.

We were stopped on downs twice in scoring position.

This is a 50-point game and a 3-to-10 point lead at halftime very easily.

Ik u think im being a debby downer. But like come on, most of the teams u mentioned i don't respect or think r that good. The 2 teams i do think are good Bama and Oregon. Oregon I’ll give u, even though I think they have red flags as well and Wiscy is a better team than this injury ridden Stanford team. I don’t really expect SEC teams to blow each other out unless a major injury happens. In this era of CFB and the variance being smaller usually those games are close. Despite SC record I think they are a team with talented players and would be difficult to beat at home if healthy.

Also I’m plenty satisfied with the results. I’m just pointing out the red flags that I’ve been pointing out since game 1 and think they’ll bite us in the *** down the line.

Hang on a second.

All week I was told the run game was 100% Mirabal and Dawson just calls what he’s told to call.

Now you’re telling me that not only is the run game Dawson’s, but actually it’s Mirabal coming up with creative short yardage plays???

LMAOOOOOOOOO this place is demented.
This is so good.

I also love the "{insert fanbase} warned us!"

As if it's not always just playing the result and every fanbase hates their coaches.

Stanford was gassed by half time. We could have scored at will from any field position.

What game were you watching?
Really? Because even when given all those short fields in the 3rd quarter, the offense only scored 3 out of 4 times.

I would actually have felt a little bit better if we came out in the first half scored on 5 of 6 possessions like we did in the second half spreading the ball around, playing with some tempo, hitting some explosives with guys like Lyle and Malachi. Instead we were 7-7 at the half against Stanford. Problem is Mario has a storied history of shortening games. Sometimes you get away with it because the talent discrepancy is too great. And there’s times where you lose GT in 23 and 24, LVille last week. You’ll know after each teams 1st possession next week if your gonna be able to sit back and enjoy a game or if you’ll be on the edge of your seat for a game against a 3 loss team that is barely a year removed from the G5.

Full disclosure, I couldn't watch the game last night and was just following it on my phone best I could. Watching the game now, and.....we didn't look THAT bad, or at least as bad as I pictured in that first half? Stupid penalties derailing offense, check....but it seemed like they'd often get 5-6 yards on a first down run, only to try another run up the middle or a tunnel screen and get stuffed on it.

Also, people were making it seem like Beck was godawful from what I was reading.....while I'm not seeing him doing that much in this game, hey, at least he took wide open checkdowns when they were there and let our guys try to make some plays in space.

Definitely not perfect, but I've seen worse ACC games. They still need to cut down on stupid mistakes and shake things up more, offensively, if they are going to have any chance going forward. I don't like the whole shortening games philosophy, either. I prefer to try and get as many possessions as possible.....
