A coach from the trenches

I want a coach who isnt scared to drag a player off the field by his face mask.
Meh. That might make you feel better, but its not a prerequisite for a great coach. Pete Carroll didnt have to do that, nor did Chris Petersen or many others. Heck, I dont think I've ever seen Nick Saban do that. Flip side I've seen waaay more coaches that were total scrubs doing that kind of stuff. Just give me a coach that can get in his players heads, makes them extremely mentally tough, makes quitting an unfathomable thought, makes guys go all out and hold eachotger accountable to success, and lastly and perhaps most importantly holds his staff accountable every day.

And…Miami won…

No one is immune to legit criticism but the guy needs to pick the right games.
Yeah...his gameday coaching wasn't up to par with Bowden in 2000...when he beat the defending NCs...ask Michael Vick and Beamer how was his coaching in 2000....Or Spurrier in the 2001 Sugar Bowl...Once the Sanctions were all but squashed...and we finally had depth...NOBODY wanted a piece of us...

No doubt.

It was shame Vick was out for most of the 2000 game (ankle). And when he did try to play he couldn’t move. Canes still win, but could have been a classic.

A Healthy Vick wouldn't have mattered...We Destroyed them...Jamaal Green had one of the most Dominating performances by a UM DLmen in UM History...Absolute Animal...

No doubt we‘d win, but the game would have a lot better than 28-0 at the half on the way to an easy rout. And, I’d rather beat teams at their full strength rather than give them an excuse.

100%. Players need to respect their coaches. The tough guy fear routine can wear out quickly if it’s performative.

Davis was literally BEGGING for the job but look how many know nothings are here who trash the BOT, albeit rightfully so, who also didn't want him back. Nobody's going to convince me he wouldn't have this program in better shape than this.
We would have been in the playoffs and recruiting would be better. He built the 2001 championship team.

While I thought the point was obvious I will be explicit, we need a disciplinarian. Saban does it in practice and his kids not only listen to him they respect him and they know they will sit for being a dumbass. The kids on this team dont give a **** what the coach says and walk away from him when they are getting onto him. Cristobal would turn that **** around on day 1. Lane... not so sure. I saw Hall miss a tackle so bad and then on the same series did about 3 different things that all could have been called personal fouls. On a team that's routinely ranked in the 100s for penalties and has missed twice as many tackles as any other team. You want to know why we cant win with all this talent? Because its not disciplined. Not in practice and not in the games.

All speculation and rumors aside, I want a coach who comes from the trenches. Jimmy Johnson, Butch Davis, Mario Cristobal, Kenard Lang and Sam Pittman all are coaches who played in the trenches and I think those guys have something about them. I know it shouldn’t be the main criteria for hiring, nor should it be a determining factor, but I do like a big intimidating coach. I wanna see a Miami coach chew a player out the way Cristobal did against Arizona, that would make me start to believe again.
If you want a screamer just get muschamp he will chew the players head off and you can get him pretty cheap.

Dabo and Saban played DB, but I think Saban is the exception. He just has it. Plus I would say those three are outliers.
Nick Saban - DB as a player, DBs Coach and LBs Coach
Urban Meyer - DB as a player, QBs, WRs, DBs and OLBs Coach
Dabo Swinney - WR as a player, WRs Coach
Bill Belichick - Special Teams Coach, WRs Coach and LBs Coach
Bobby Bowden - QB as a player, WRs Coach
Bill Walsh - RBs, DBs, WRs Coach
Eddie Robinson - QB as a player
Don Shula - DB as a player, DBs Coach
Paul Brown - QB as a player
Joe Paterno - QB, CB as a player
Bud Wilkinson - QB as a player
Tom Osborne - QB, WR as a player
Bob Stoops - DB as a player, DBs Coach
Steve Spurrier - QB as a player, QBs and WRs Coach
Tom Landry - CB, Punter, QB, RB as a player
Bill Parcells - LB as a player, LB Coach
Pete Carroll - QB, WR, DB as a player, DBs Coach
Mike Tomlin - WR as a player, WRs and DBs Coach
Bill Cowher - LB as a player, Special Teams and DBs Coach
Tom Coughlin - RB as a player, QBs and WRs Coach
Tony Dungy - QB and DB as a player, DBs Coach
Dennis Green - RB as a player, RBs, WRs and Special Teams Coach
Don James - QB as a player (at The U), DBs Coach
Don Coryell - RB as a player
Chris Peterson - QB as a player, WRs and QBs Coach

There are many good coaches who DID play and/or coach "in the trenches".
There are many good coaches who didn't do either as listed above.

What was interesting in reading about these coaches, is how many of them were great coaches of styles/positions that didn't directly correlate to what they played or coached as assistants.
There are coaches who played/coached on the perimeter who were known for having tough teams in the trenches and coaches who played./coached in the trenches who were known for airing it out and being great on the perimeter.

It seems to be more about being a person who has a good overall knowledge of the sport, knows their own strengths and weaknesses in coaching and recruiting and builds a good staff that covers their weaknesses. If you've never played/coached in the trenches, get a position coaching job under someone who has excelled at that and learn and pick their brain. If that's still not your area of expertise when you get your first coordinator/head coaching gig, hire coaches on the offensive and defensive lines that can handle that (and you can still learn from the coaches who work under you, don't let pride get in the way *looks at Manny*). Generally, whether you're a calm Tony Dungy type with no experience in the trenches or a bat**** Woody Hayes type with lots of experience there, know yourself and don't lie to yourself about your weaknesses, and prepare for your job accordingly and you should be fine.
