8/20 Podcast Debate: Will Carson Beck be better than Cam Ward?

Anyone who thinks Beck is better than cam has rocks in their head. Beck will be good, at moments great. Other moments you will be scratching your head saying wtf. Just win baby, best roster in 20 years
hmmm, I think you could have said that about Cam last season , too.

To me, the biggest difference will likely be all those "wow" plays. some of those plays were born from mistakes made earlier and the need to make a big play to keep moving the chains. Others were simply a part of Cam's dna as a "gunslinger"

I think Beck will move the ball in a less spectacular way but still achieve the same end results...

On yesterday’s show @Peter Ariz dropped a bomb by saying he feels Carson Beck will have a better season than Cam Ward did 👀

What do y’all think? Can Miami have back to back number 1 picks in the draft?

Around 30 min mark or around there for Pete’s take

I believe that @Peter Ariz also said that Jerry Butler will have the biggest package in ****. I heard it.

Beck will have a better season because he'll have 11 wins and we're going to the ACCCG and the playoffs this year... 2 things the team couldn't accomplish, despite Cam's statistically historical season...

but statistically, it's hard to imagine Beck having more yards or TDs than Cam... partially because we shouldn't need as many because our defense should be way better...

Here is what I will say. Nobody could have ever dreamed that Cam would be the QB he was here last season.

Beck comes in much more accomplished, was actually projected to be the #1 pick in 2025, has practiced and played against better comp than any returning starter in P5, boasts a 24-3 record as a starter, completed 65% of his passes last year (better than NUSS and KLUB) even with his receivers leading the nation in drops, was at 73% his 1st year starting, is 6'4, 220, can make every throw and is not a statue.

Yes, we lost a lot on offense, but their is no doubt Cam drastically improved/elevated our overall offensive room last year. Why can't Beck do the same? Do not sleep on this dude. It's his money year and the ACC is going to be a joke for this guy. Notre Dame and UF won't phase him. He has gone up against much better.

Basically where I’m at as far as Beck is concerned. He ain’t Cam, but he is more than good enough for the ACC and has faced much more talent in his sleep and will have better protection than he had last year.
I don’t expect the passing game to be clicking game 1 against an elite pass D, but I don’t expect anything close to a goose egg either. He has seen everything. If we can protect him, which I am confident we can, he will have a great season in this bull**** conference. I am not worried about him one bit.

Now the defense on the other hand….
Not “worried” about them either, but I need to see it. That’s for a different thread though.

Beck will not have better numbers than Cam cause the defense(fingers crossed) wont be as ****** as last year and he wont have to be in a shootout every game

I mean listen, was Cam what he was last year prior to that season? He had what many believed was a 5th round grade arriving at Miami. Beck was projected by everyone to be the #1 pick going into the 2024 season.

Clearly Cam had a sensational season. But, nobody had Cam on Carsons level going into 2024. By no means am I discounting Cam's 2024 season, I am simply saying that it would not surprise me the least if Beck has something close to a season like the one Cam did.

You mentioned it briefly, but he will have a much better OL this year than he did last year at UGA. He will also have a running game, something again he did not have least year (UGA 102nd in the country. Most importanlty as we mentioned, he will not face anywhere near the caliber of defenses in the ACC as he did in the SEC.

In Becks two years starting at UGA, he averaged 3,713 yards, 26 TDs/9 INTs, 68.6 completion percentage, 156.6 QB Rating.

Yards averaged the last 2 years is good for top 7 in the country, QB Rating and Completion % top 10.

Again, just saying I will bot be surprised if he puts up monster numbers. We didn't pay him all that money to hand the ball off 40x a game.

As @Cribby said last year Cam was nothing short of incredible

But our “hurry up defense” sure helped add to the statistical domination

I don’t expect to dominate because it’s college football but we won’t be “back” until we start routinely taking mid ACC teams behind the woodshed and resting our starters in the 4th quarter

I’m going to say no. Mainly because I think we miss Arroyo/George in the passing game. I’m confident Toney replaces X but idk about the other two.

Can we still have a top 15 offense? Yes

So you think we can replace our record setting pass catching receiver, but not Arroyo and George...........I am not sure I follow that logic.

I will start by agreeing, Cam was the best QB we have had at Miami. No question! Miami has never thrown the ball like that, so their really isn't a comparison at all before Dawson. In saying that, Cam was definitely flawed. I have said, he will not be able to take off running when his 1st read is covered and get away with hero ball in the NFL. He will not be the best NFL QB Miami produced.
I believe Carson can challenge Cam's stats. I expect Carson to have a big year and I never believed we are going run heavy. That isn't Dawson's O. I expect about the same as last year while looking different. Obviously, Carson will check down, but I believe he could throw more deep balls than Cam because we actually have some guys that can get open deep this year. Even without a true burner. Tossing out a guess, 4,000 yards, 35 TD's and 8 int., 200 yds rushing and 4 rushing TD's

You heard of Malachi Toney? Very confident in him
Absolutely heard of him and have heard all the confidence. Again though, you’re replacing our record setting receiver without issue with a freshman who’s never played a snap of college football, but you can’t replace a TE and average receiver. Again, the logic seems quite flawed.

The slot eats every season in Dawsons offense. Toney isn’t just some freshman though as he’s got a better understanding of scheme playing QB at times. I love X but Toney has that same dawg attitude and is probably faster. We’ll see.

Arroyo just can’t be replaced with his size and speed.

I think much higher of JG than other so I can admit that

Dude IDK, posted Beck's highlight reel recently and watched a couple of games now from his last season at UGA. Dude slings the ball, has the arm to go deep, and I witnessed several well placed deep balls (lol paws). If the chemistry is there and receivers run their routes, I think dude eats. Will he roll out of the pocket and have 5 vets finding the soft spot for him to throw to on the run, meh, IDK, but he can throw on the run as well. So my conclusion - WHO TF KNOWS :) go canes
