4-star TE Israel Briggs Sets Commitment Date Between Two Schools

It definitely feels like we keep going for like specific role TEs instead of just a legit TE1 no questions asked. Maybe only Brock Shott fills that space for any of the TEs Mario has recruited since coming here? Kinda crazy tbh.
Like Lofton I think will be a beast but is significantly undersized would be extreme outlier in terms of height in NFL. This yrs class Briggs would be extremely undersized as a TE due to weight while Kent would be extremely oversized by weight and is basically a OT3 when on the field.
I mean it's probably not at all a problem for now given I do think Lofton and Schott are going to be legit for us over next 2-4 seasons.
But next yr I want a top All-Around TE, where you don't just say he's only filling this specific role. We need a guy that we look at and say he will be asked to do everythingm and actually has the unquestioned size/build to do it

How do you get to be a consensus 4 star, and the #2 TE in Florida -- and not be able to catch the ball? If you don't have all the basic skills ... no way you should be rated a strong four star recruit.
That’s above my pay grade but I think rankings take in a lot of projection for 3/4 years down the road.I love the rating systems.

I remember leaving that practice and the 2 things that stuck out to me were skinner couldn’t catch and jaccari missing a bunch of throws
Sure, just like the NFL, colleges sign HS players who they see development potential in. But ...those kids aren't typically four stars. And we're talking a basic skill (catching the ball) here.
Happens at all positions. Look at Tate Martell and Kyle Wright. Both 5 star QB's who couldn't throw with any accuracy, nor run.

Thats why i stated this kid HAS to come in here atleast 210 at minimum. If he is sitting around 190 now....he will need a plan or to definitely be an early enrolee.
He is essentially will be a BIG slot if that makes sense. Which i understand...i wont expect him to block anything but safeties and corners. Looks like we are gonna land him because i think lsu is passing so if we are the top 2 thats easy to figure out.

I mean 20lbs is a big difference in weight entering, if that's even what Arroyo/Briggs enter at. I don't think asing a TE recruit to be MINIMUM 200-210lbs upon enrollment is that much to ask for. The lightest TE at the combine this past season was like 238lbs. So to get to 235lbs, Briggs has to increase his bodyweight 25% from where it is now.... That's a lot. And 235lbs is still a very undersized TE. And that's before even accounting for the fact that this dude is listed as 6'6" Like Mallory was 240lbs but was 6'4", so even he was thicker. Briggs to be a legit TE here at 6'6" needs to be like 245lbs minimum imo. I mean maybe his height is incorrect though and he actually is closer to Mallorys 6'4 and some change which does mean 235lbs min. Either way if dude is 190 thats 45lbs of weight to put on. If he comes in at 210 or similar, then asking to put on 25lbs is far more reasonable goal within 1.5 years....

Would be a jumbo slot role, kind of like Colston on the Saints. At least that's how i'd use him if he commits
He does play DE to so its not like hes afraid to get physical, but the frame/weight mean hes not going to be ready for that until at least going into year 3.

247 had Arroyo listed at 210 and Briggs at 200. Not a 20 lb difference and he meets your minimum weight limit before entering his senior season. Yeah he needs to get to around 230 for his skill set most likely. This kid runs track also. For all we know his weight reflects that. I’d bet good money he enrolls around 215 if the 200 is accurate.

I’ve never heard of top football players from Visalia. Baseball? Yes; football? No. Poor breeding ground. Surprised to see they have him ranked this high just knowing his competition. This kid would be more of a project than a polished, traditional blue chip.

The Skinner problem was he couldn’t catch
and he was thin.
Biggs is still a junior and he has Njoku like talents . This year and his redshirt freshman season will tell a lot if he could or can’t put on weight. His thick legs and broad shoulders , I say it nothing to worry about.

yeah as @Memnon said he should have transfered to Tulare/Hanford or somewhere closer to Fresno...
But whatever, ultimately I view him as a developmental high reward option. @DMoney has been saying we are deep with 3 TEs, so I'd guess thats the plan. High risk/reward in Briggs. Kent is a low risk primarily blocking TE that should be useful sooner than later. Then you got the other TE we're after I don't remember his name...
I don't think it's a matter of "going for"…We are going for a lot of tight ends and do so every year.
Lofton fills all roles, he just doesn't have height…But if you are going by measurables, then he's a little short. But if we go by having size/speed combo then Gilbert is very close, he's just not some slow lug. **** even Carver has NFL measurable, he was just raw to the game and now injured. If you are looking for all around TE that also have typical NFL height, then there is maybe a handful of them a year, and we usually do "go for" them…**** read the tight end threads last couple years…We offer a lot and even bring a ton for visits in the spring.
We were on Mark Bowman heavy this year… Kaiden Prothro and Keandre Harrison were two of our top targets early. **** even Sorensen, although only a 3* kinda fits the bill of having a little bit of everything with the height.

Yea but by that logic how would any FBS scholarship WR or TE have bad hands? But some do. Sometimes it's because those high school QBs don't throw bullets like D1 college QBs. Sometimes guys just can't make the transition mentally. As for Skinner, obviously he caught a lot of passes in high school, but the word from around Greentree was he couldn't catch, couldn't block, and had bad work ethic. Seems as though that probably holds true as he hasn't exactly lit it up since he left.I love the rating systems.

Exactly. Skinner was a talented athlete who was challenged running routes and just couldn’t catch. Hard to overcome those limitations. I wouldn’t worry about Briggs based on Skinner’s fate.

Could he catch in High School? If he couldn’t, why did we pursue him so hard & why did we celebrate this as a big time flip?
