Intrigue over D'Anfernee McGriff, John Burt surrounds National Signing Day
Brian Miller, Democrat correspondent 3:53 p.m. EST February 3, 2015

"There's always uncertainty."

Those were the words expressed by Leon High football coach Tim Cokely in regards to upcoming commitments via letter of intent to be made at Wednesday's multitude of National Signing Day ceremonies around the city.

Many decisions have been set in stone for quite some time. But personal wavering and late pushes by colleges in desperate need of a skilled player means anyone is up for grabs until the ink dries........

Things at Leon are a bit more chaotic, with at least one coach calling the atmosphere surrounding the Lions' decision-making process, "crazy."

Leon quarterback D'Anfernee McGriff, who could make his mark as a wide receiver or running back at the next level, had been an Auburn commitment since last year.

McGriff grew up a Florida fan and he chose the Tigers in April 2014 over the Gators and Florida State. But that was before Florida fired head coach Will Muschamp— now Auburn's defensive coordinator— and brought in Jim McElwain from Colorado State.

At January's Under Armour All-American game, McGriff mentioned he'd like to be visited by McElwain. In late January, the 6-foot-1, 230-pounder took an official visit to Gainesville.

Monday night, McGriff officially decommitted from Auburn. Leon coaches have no idea what the four-star prospect's decision will be, but Auburn is no longer in the mix, and FSU and Florida are back on the table.

"If money is influence, then there's a lot of influence when it comes to major college football, and I don't think people on the outside understand the pressure it puts on young men," said Cokely, referring to choosing the correct program and defining the best career path.

"Half the guys that sign are probably questioning whether it's right. Of a hundred D-1 schools, how can you go wrong with the great institutions? I think the process gets really murky and it's important for players to have a strong family structure at home or through their high school program like 'D' has with us." ........

"I'm just happy there's a deadline, because if there wasn't we'd never get anyone signed," Cokely said.

"But every situation is different. A recruiter will come in and make you think their school is for everybody, but it's just not. Our guys are trying to find the right fit, and that could mean academically, athletically or socially— the culture on campus. They start weighing those things out and being 17-, 18-year old guys, they change their mind."

hear coaches want him as an h-back as opposed to pure rb/wr so shouldn't factor much into cronkite's decision
