4-3 cover 2

nobody in our division is gonna touch us now. fun and games are over. Jimbo. your *** boy.

That is not a passive defense in any way. DL has to attack and CBs reroute and jam.

Richt has had coordinators that run both 4-3 and 3-4 base during his time in UGA. Both defenses can be aggressive.

What I find interesting is that he apparently confidently cited a 4-3 defense like Miami of old. I wonder if he has a specific DC in mind or lined up which informed his thoughts.

Aggressive vs passive is really the sticking point. Mark sets the tone for the team.

We won't know until it's on the field - no coach will tell you he wants their defense to be "passive".

Exactly. That's why I'm saying I don't care what they say about scheme. I want to see assignments.

Gotcha. Just to pick your brain a bit more if you have time, what assignments do you look for in an "aggressive" defense?

Starting with DL, 1gap vs 2gap. I want to see where our ends line up. I don't think we've seen a DE consistently lineup outside of 5tech in way too many years. I want to see how often we stay in 2 deep safeties. I want to see if we roll a Safety down based on formation. I want to see Corner assignments.

Let's use Golden as an example. We initially heard a bunch about scheme. Being multiple. Players, not plays. Etc. When they finally went to their version of defense in 2012, you could see everything flow back to a passive theme. DEs playing contain. DTs 2-gapping. LBs reading and reacting. Crappy, stretched out Cover 3 behind a non-aggressive front? Come on. No one can hold their assignment and the unit can't stay "tied" together for that long.

Basically, let's begin to check for data points that flow into whether Coach Richt wants to field an aggressive, downhill team. Better idea of what he'll do on offense, but his tone is important for defense, obviously.

I just want to see us pressure the A gap. I don't know that the previous regime knew what that was.

Thanks. If I have some time, I might try and compile a snapshot of his UGA defenses over the multiple coordinators he's had and see if I can find some consistencies.

And, I'm exaggerating (for effect) about our guys only in 5tech. Of course, with some level of balance so we don't completely lose leverage. I don't want to see an overreaction to 'aggressive' that has us look like a mess, either. SOUND defense. SIMPLER defense.

UGA ran a 3-4 under Grantham and a hybrid 3-3-5 under Pruitt. That's probably the direction to go to best defend these spread offenses honestly. That or the 4-2-5, which is what UF now runs under Collins and Shannon.

Harlan Barnett or Mike Tressel might want to stop being co-coordinators ...

Michigan State claims to run the "old Miami" defense ...

This I can tell you from what I've already seen at UGA - his defenses are (or strive to be) VERY sound. Not a lot of smoke and mirrors. When I was there he used a lot of Cover 1/Cover 3 with a "rover" safety who was a headhunter (Greg Blue.) I'll do some more digging, but I think you'll definitely see a simpler, more "North-South" defense regardless of scheme.

Problem with looking at some of the things from UGA was he had some things thrust upon him. It wasn't his idea to give up the playcalling, from what I understand. He didn't want Pruitt, who's a good DC, but bad fit for him. He brought Van Gorder with him, and their defense with him there was good. I would bet that he told Blake that he wanted complete control this time and wanted to do it his way.
