4/1 Spring Practice Recap

For all those dudes dreaming that Perry is going to walk in and start after a month of practice in the fall just look at what's happening with Weldon.

Weldon grew up with a dad who played QB at the highest level and was pretty advanced as a leader and well versed technically when he got here. And he's lagging behind because Rick expects perfection from his QBs. He puts a ton on the QBs plate, and that's nearly impossible for a true freshmans to master in such a short time. They start thinking too much and lose command of the huddle. Head starts swimming.

Agreed. Unless a kid is a transcendent talent, coming in and starting as a true frosh is very difficult. Even more so if not an early enrollee. And while Richt is not as conservative as the previous coach, neither is he Olive Garden in terms of risk taking.

Kaaya did it

Not saying it can't happen, but Kaaya was a bit of a special case. Ryan Williams shredded his knee and missed all spring and summer. And Kaaya was also an EE.

I agree the staff is going to give Perry a chance to be the guy. But if that doesn't happen, it doesn't mean the sky is falling or Perry won't have a great college career.

Kayaa was definitely not an EE. That's a hugely important detail to forget

Some of our porsters live in an alternate universe.

Kaaya was not an EE.

Kaaya had to compete against Jake Heaps. The talent level is much higher at QB now than it was 3 years ago. Weldon, Perry, Shirreffs, Allison and Rosier are all better QBs than Heaps. Rosier NOW is, maybe not 3 years ago.

Perry can do it, but he's going to have to absolutely slay the competition. Every one of those QBs knows he's coming for their job. The pressure is on them right now to step up or step aside. If ANY of them respond to that pressure and grabs the lead, it'll be hard for Perry to overtake them. If no one does that, Perry has a pretty good shot. I have a feeling a guy or two will step up.

I'm thankful that finally, finally we have people actually pushing each other for the job. Perry hasn't even arrived yet and he's pushing for the job. It's a beautiful thing to see.

We need a game manager this year. This team can make the ACCCG game with that and nothing more. And a freshman probably isn't the best candidate in that regard. I'll take Rosier or Allison, managing games and limiting turnovers, and ride Walton and this defense to a place we haven't been to -- ever. Count me out of the group willing to sacrifice a chance at a conference championship in order to indoctrinate by fire a freshman with a higher ceiling.

That based on the assumption that the two are equal in talent, which the staff doesn't believe they are.

Pete on his Podcast with Gilbert Frierson, said none of the QB's have really separated themselves yet as the true leader of the pack.
He said he expects Richt to name a leader after Spring Ball & essentially have them go head to head in reps come Fall with Perry.

What that means to me is, Richt is essentially going to give Perry every opportunity to take the job from whoever emerges from Spring as the QB1.

That's not a guarantee that Perry's going to win the job, in fact he probably won't, but it's not completely out of the realm like you may believe it to be.

Sometimes you fellas get too caught up in "talent." There's a ton more that goes into winning QB'ing than "talent." It's impossible to show that full range of talent when you're bogged down in thought. And it's nearly impossible to lead a team of men when you don't know what you're doing.

Kaaya was not an EE.

And Kaaya was competing against no one. Heaps of **** was here about as long as Kaaya was when they were competing. Rosier has been here forever, and he and the other guys have a full year and a half in this offense.

You dudes are underestimating just how much Rick puts on his QB. He expects perfection, and he expects them to go exactly where he wants them to go with the ball every time. It's a lot tougher offense to pick up than the garbage Coley was running. And. Play had Kaaya looking at the sidelines before every snap. He put nothing on him unlike what Rick does with his QBs.

The story behind Kaaya starting was that Golden was looking for a built-in excuse to underachieve. I do not know if this is factual but I wouldn't put it past that staff.

Golden had a whiteboard in his office that in large letters just said "Media Deflection Ideas"

And if a coach walked by, like Dorito, they were free to scribble a few down. Then at the end of the week as a staff they went over them and chose the best.

My bad. I must have been confusing him with the only other true freshman to start week one in my lifetime, jacory. The point otherwise remains... it's a tough ask to expect Perry to start as a true freshman.

That's why I think we end up with a one year guy like Rosier. You don't want the drama of starting Allison for a year than having to talk about a QB controversy next year.

The story was that Williams was going to be the starter but wasn't fully healed.

He probably could have played later, like maybe game 5 or 6.

Richt knows how to coach QBs. He has stated more than once in interviews that the QB has to do things the way he teaches, and he wants them to do it consistently. I don't know who the most talented candidate is, but I suspect that the freshmen will still be behind the curve on consistency by the time the season rolls around. leads me to expect the starter for game one will be Rosier or Allison.

Exactly. Guys get caught up in talent. Perry is super talented no doubt. Allison is a talented guy too. He came in last year and was completely lost. Never even stood a chance of winning the backup job. He didn't lose his talent. He just couldn't operate the system flawlessly like Rick demands because it's an incredible task for a true freshmans.

With our schedule, there's no reason why any of our 4 QBs can't at least win six out of our first seven games. By which I mean Walton and our defense could win us 6/7 if we just hand off 25-30 times a game and play keep away with our new QB. If there's any year to break in a QB it's this one with our running game, defense, and schedule all being extremely favorable (on paper of course.)

IMO our floor is 9-4 this season, with 10-3/11-2 entirely possible. I think any of our QBs can get us there.

It is very hard to start as a true frosh. Kaaya was uber talented and had nothing but Heaps ( who got NFL looks so he wasn't dogmeat) in front of him. UM has 3-4 other very decent to good QBs right now. We just need someone to manage the game this season. If he can be like Krenzel was the year OSU got the cheap title then we are golden. Perry is the future but both Cade and Allison are **** talented as well. I think all 3 will start in college for at least a year but I obviously think one of the 3 won't be doing it here.
