3 Concerns

I'm concerned about the lack of explosives in the run game. We were death by 1000 paper cuts just like last yr. 2 yds 2yds 3yds 4yds. No chunks...no one extending runs making ppl miss.
Run blocking was average, but not bad. Florida's d-line might have been a little better than what we originally thought. I don't think our o-line was losing the battle, just didn't dominate their d-line in the run game. There were no negative running plays, and I don't remember Florida's d-line penetrating into the backfield, but we weren't pushing them around. It also helps having Martinez that always seems to fall forward and make the most out of nothing. Fletcher isn't bad either.

My only concern is that we still don’t seem to have much explosiveness returning kicks. if you look at our really great teams, we gained a lot of points and field position from kick returns. The last big time kick return I recall was Berrios against FSU, or Jeff Thomas against VTech.

I don’t think it’s fair to expect an offense to drive 70-80 yards every possession to score 30+ points. We will need some short fields. Of course the only short field UM had yesterday resulted in 0 points after the Powell INT.

I hear you, but I think credit should go to the opposing defense for their discipline and making it as difficult as they could. 33 for 144 & 4.4 ypc average without explosives was solid.

On the other side they went 28 for 139 with a 5.0 average with that 71 yard run on the bad angle; Take away that explosive run and they were 27 for 68 with 2.5 ypc average.

Three improvements...

I get the impression that Mario has ceded over most game day responsibilities to his subordinates. This is excellent news if this behavior continues.

Our Quarterback plays the game with professional level decision making and poise.

The players seem to have a a stronger collective mentality.

If these things continue, the only teams that could conceivably beat these Canes, are teams that are truly better in these phases. Of which, there are in my opinion, less than a handful.

B. Smith, had some explosive runs last season and brought a ton of juice to special teams. I hear what you're saying but that aspect of the game has changed somewhat; kick-offs are going into the endozone and a good percentage of punts are going to be wedge shots or fair catches.

Miami also ran right at them. Not sure why that’s the game plan but they seem to want to run straight the middle

my only concern is we didnt take a knee

and Im glad we didn't, run that score up on those bytches

We should have taken some shots at the endzone at the end of the game. They did that to us back in 2009, kicked a field goal with 30 seconds left as opposed to running out the clock. They don't deserve mercy.

maybe I need to rewatch because where is all this concern for DT coming from
Depth. I don't think many are that concerned about the talent but more so the depth. That and they wish we had a huge 6' 5" 330lbs space eater but that's not absolutely necessary.

I don't think our DL was tested much last night. UF's OL was considered mediocre at best going into the game, and I felt they were vastly overrated even calling them mediocre. That and their fat DTs who couldn't generate a pass rush were what convinced me we'd win comfortably.

I'm not sure we really face Top 20 OLs this season, though. If/when we do, we'll need to resurface this discussion.

Just did a rewatch and focused on the DL mostly.

Moten was incredible against the run made 3-4 really nice plays. Clark didn't impress me much. barrow worth the money and drama. Campbell and Scott play way to high against run to be effective right now. Not surprising with Scott since it was his first game. Campbell can be effective 3rd down interior rusher though. #8 I doubt we see outside of garbage time this year.

Was Marley Cook injured? Saw him suited up but he didn't get any burn. getting Bain back will help out run defense a lot. With him out we had to play Alston more on early downs and he got overpowered a couple of times on runs but man can he rush the passer.

Hopefully Clark steps up but if not we have Moten. Would like to see another guy step up as dependable interior run stopper though.

This team is really really good.

Love that last play with Cam was 4 TE play action to lofton with whole team pushing him for extra yardage. We got sloppy and left some points on the board late in the game but that was a nice last **** you to the gaytors

We did get chunk runs. Look at the Martinez run and the Fletcher TD. I hear you though. Running between the guards is never pretty when you're trying to move space eaters.

I believe our run game will be fine.

my concern is depth... and that wasn't answered considering we had our starters out there till 4 minutes left in the game up 24 points for the last 15minutes of the game.

We have to run right at them sometimes. Can't totally avoid that. Would have like to see a few more creative runs or runs that weren't just right up the middle, but I thought Dawson did decent at mixing in some runs that weren't all up the gut.

this is why I like you grover, you a straight killer lol

I know fans are looking for things to nitpick but running between the tackles ain’t it

All you gotta do is watch that Fletcher TD run

The hesitation by the formation and the entire Florida defense crashed towards the middle and Fletcher got to walk in the end zone

Dawson made them his ***** on that one

a nitpick for the film room: lots of drifting left during ward's dropbacks. maybe dawson's fine with it, idk, but nfl coaches will need that fixed, and it's possible for that sort of thing to affect timing/accuracy

Agreed. I don't understand why that's the staple, the go-to for Dawson. It wasn't working that well and hasn't worked well against any teams the past season either.

Maybe he just does it to set up the ones like we saw with Fletcher in key situations. Still, more variety would be a welcome addition.
