Because we can’t take the admin at their word & one more year of Manny would stifle our recruiting even more than it is now.
I believe he’s definitely gone at the end of the season, but hypothetically in the event he’s not, keeping him an extra year would be the worse decision possible, because everyone knows he’s gone & it’s a 1,000% fact we would have another 6-6 type season.
If they can’t get Mario there’s still a bunch of really good options, if Mario doesn’t leave this year, he’s definitely not gonna leave next year either, so having a Mario or bust approach to hiring the next coach is really dumb.
Luckily for them, it appears they’re going to get Mario, but if they don’t, the last thing they should do is retain Manny, that would all but bury our recruiting in a highly decorated mausoleum till 2025. You can kiss the next two classes goodbye if Manny is still HC next season.
I don't know. Our AD is in shambles, there is a lot of talk about changes and money, but it's already November 17th, and we might need to show CFB that this isn't another Miami banana in the tailpipe before we can get a top, top guy to come. At the higher end of the spectrum, it's about more than money. The money being there only allows the conversation to start.
If we can get one of our top few guys, guys we think can be THE GUY, we get him NOW. Mario, Kiffin, etc. But I'd rather keep Manny for another year while we show CFB that we are doing a full 180 in our AD, than give a four-year contract to our 7th choice in a few weeks. We don't want another Golden/Shannon/Manny contract setting us back a few more years. The goal isn't "better than Manny," the goal is a seismic shift in AD, operations, and staffing. Beyond.
I think the key thing that is happening, and its smart, is to not paint ourselves into any corner. There is no benefit to that. They want to make a full change. And we will. But why close any doors today when the future is unknown?
