I agree that if you can get a kid his caliber in the portal than its fine. However, there are maybe 1 or 2 caleb downs a cycle and they are normally more expensive in the portal than coming out of HS and still have tons of suitors willing to pay the inflated price tag. I just think you take as many swings as possible to build the best roster and depending on your last strike (the portal) to hit a home run every time will eventually get you especially since you have no control of whats available to a certain degree. I dont think its an accident that oregon, uga, bama, and osu consistently make the playoffs and consistently have had top 5 classes during marios tenure. Sure michigans and indianas exist but you need exceptional coaching to overcome. Not impossible but starting the season uphill.
