2026 Portal QBs

Why not look at the portal? If you can get an elite starting QB for the right price you do it. If you can't get one because they are asking for NFL money, then it's only a massive failure if you don't have a QB on the roster good enough to start. I think Nickel is good enough to start.
Based off what?

Do you think we need it in two locations, because it already seems to be stuck to your ***.

No am saying if they felt the QB was on the roster i dont think they wouñd be looking in the portal for a sure starter. They would either go after a backup type or just say ride with what we got. Nickel and Emory in whatever order

We're 23-5 over the last two years and playing for #6 on Monday because Mario took a high risk approach and won twice. I can't sit here now and say this was the year to stop taking the risks that were integral in getting us those results. I thought Bailey was someone who would have been a fine option after we swung for the fences. The risk was always there that he wouldn't wait around that long (Same as it was when we pursued higher rated HS QBs who didn't sign here over him). When you gamble you will end up losing eventually. Doesn't mean you should stop gambling before you lose for the first time, IMO.

Lemme ask you, since you did call your shot early and urged Mario to go get Bailey and be done with it: Is that what you wanted us to do the prior two years in the portal? We would have gotten Will Rogers in '24 and Mendoza/Mensah in '25 had we pursued the bird in the hand portal strategy. Results inarguably would have been much worse in '24 (perhaps disastrous), and taking Mendoza/Mensah in '25 after those results would have been much, much different than taking them after Cam.

We'll see how things shake out in the end here, but even if we end up with worst possible outcome this year (Emory/Nickel/Coleman spring & fall QB-o-rama, or even worse Nickel/Coleman + G5/FCS alsoran cause Emory goes to ECU) I'm still not gonna kill Coach for pursuing a strategy for a third time that I think was a big reason why we are playing in the National Championship game on Monday.

I understand why a lot of you will disagree.
You can go back to the thread on Mendoza and a few of us were calling for Mendoza to be the QB, from Cribby, D$ and some others.

I didn’t like Beck, didn’t like the injury and there are still aspects of his game (down field throwing that I didn’t and still don’t like). But Beck has been very good for this team and and happy we got him and he’s done better than I thought. Just not Mendoza good but I am wishing for him to whip Mendoza’s *** on the field.

With Cam, I wanted him and it was worth the risk. Different point of the program. Yes, I still stated that the process was not a good one and it worked out.

I did push for Will Howard and to just take a QB that was ready to commit.

He ended up winning the Championship but he would have never have lifted Miami the way Cam did. We would’ve won games but at best 8-4 or 9-3 type.

But my last 2 recommendations at QB ended up in the National Championship game and one that I didn’t really want in Beck is as well.

IMO, any of Sorsby, Leavitt and Bailey would have us in the game next year and that is tanks to the roster building of Mario and the coordinators he has (although I am not a fan of Dawson).

For 2 yrs in a row fans were panicking we missed out on everyone. Then we ended up Ward and then Beck. Just a lot of handwringing when the staff has proven they know what they are doing. If they decide Nickel, Coleman, or Williams is the starter, then I trust their judgment.

Notre Dame isn't a poverty program, but they let CJ Carr compete for and win the starting job when they could have also tried to get a QB in the portal.
CJ was a borderline 5* QB. They weren't bringing in portal QBs last winter because they believed in their eval. We have operated like a team that wants a different option at QB. I don't think those scenarios are the same. We have brought in fringe 3-4* guys that weren't heavily recruited by anyone else.

CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey were definitely better talent wise compared to Nickel/Emory/Judd.

Recruiting wise the only one that come closer is Nickel who I believe he was a Top 20 QB in his class. Carr was the 6th QB in his class, Minchey Top 15.

Im not sure why people are hating on the portal approach.

Outside of a few teams, every team that’s a legitimate contender next year will have a transfer QB.

The issue was we absolutely whiffed. I’m going to chalk that up to internal dysfunction that drastically underestimated the situation with the new transfer window + managing playoff success.

The approach wasn’t the issue. It was the process, implementation, and ultimately the outcome that was the issue.
Every playoff team except us has their QB situation in place for next year (whether incumbent QB or New QB).
