I’m praying we quit playing FCS teams. Really, the whole p4 should adopt that. I’d rather have 11 p4 games than 10, but if it is 10, we’re going to smoke g6 and FCS teams anyways, but the g6 teams at least make it interesting & have some internal belief they can win.

The 2027 season, originally spread out over a 13-week schedule, including one open date for each team, will start the weekend before Labor Day weekend, with most teams kicking off on what was previously known as Week 0 (Saturday, Aug. 28) instead of Saturday, Sept. 4. The ripple effects of every move are felt by both programs involved, their other opponents and other schools down the line. Nobody wants to sit at home in early September.

One variable affects Big Ten nonconference scheduling more than the other conferences: CFP expansion. Should Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti and SEC counterpart Greg Sankey agree to expand the Playoff, the Big Ten has said it will join the ACC and SEC in requiring each member play a nonconference game against a Power 4 opponent.

Currently, there are five Big Ten schools without a power-conference team on their 2027 schedules: Indiana, Nebraska, Oregon, USC and Washington. The Huskies do play in-state rival Washington State, which was in a power conference until the original Pac-12 broke up in 2024.

I’d honestly rather play all conference games because it’s the simplest way to build a schedule. You don’t have to worry about paying a lesser opponent to come to your stadium, and there’s much less risk of having a non-conference game fall through or get canceled.

Trying to schedule home-and-homes with other P4 programs makes things much more complicated. Both schools have to balance where the game is played, how many home games each team gets, and how that fits into their conference schedule. One home-and-home series can affect your scheduling for multiple seasons.

If you’re already playing a full conference schedule, there’s a lot of logic to just filling the remaining spots with whatever format the conference requires rather than trying to coordinate additional P4 home-and-homes.
