2026-27 Coaching changes and movement

That's still a fairly underwhelming choice
In fairness, so was the Jai Lucas hire but there are some similarities.
Justin Gainey has a reputation of being a very good recruiter for Tennessee and he has no prior head coaching experience.
He does recruit the State of North Carolina well so that works in his favor.
Probably too good the more I think about it because I think he was the guy recruiting Cody Peck to Tennessee.
The good is that Tennessee is probably no longer a destination for Cody Peck.
The bad is that Justin Gainey is the head coach at NC State with $14M in NIL to fill out his roster.
No, his name doesn't win the press conference nationally but being a NC State grad keep the fanbase actively supporting the program.

Maybe to the casual fans like you but the Gainey hire isn't in the same stratosphere as the Lucas hire as far as where the two coaches are in their trajectories.

Let's be very honest, no one and I mean no one thought Jai Lucas would win 20+ games in year 1 at Miami.
No one.
Jai Lucas was considered a great recruiter with no previous coaching experience who is defensive minded.
Justin Gainey is considered a good recruiter with no previous coaching experience who is defensive minded.
Do I expect NC State to win 20 games in year 1 under Justin Gainey, no, but they will be a lot better in the long term with him as the head coach.

20 games isn’t the feat you think it is, especially with a weak non-conference schedule and a fairly favorable ACC slate.

Jai is elite but let’s not make like there wasnt a path to 20+ wins when the schedule came out couples with the roster he put together

The glaringly obvious difference between the two is that Gainey is returning to his alma mater.

I don’t want to see, and I don’t expect, him to be fired within five years; however, the easiest comps are Juwan Howard, Hubert Davis, and Kenny Payne.

Tony Skinn works as well although he isn’t a p4 coach. Syracuse’s recently fired coach fits. FSU’s current HC fits. Kevin Ollie applies.

****, this hire has a lot more in common with Jon Scheyer than it does with Jai Lucas.

Etc etc You get the idea
