A little lengthier than I originally had planned, but o well. Please feel free to add or edit any information. Will try to do offensive preview soon tomorrow, but it may take me a couple days. I think the 13th ranking is a little too high, but if some of our freshman pan out like I think they will, and Fieger and Thompson and those guys can take the next step, I think that is where we will end the season around. The most concerning thing to me is the coaching and the instruction these players will get. I think the attitude in general during intrasquad games is way too much relaxed. I watched Collins, Palmer and Kennedy all fail really badly at executing a bunt, and all you see is coaches getting disgruntled in their huddle past second base in the OF, they don't actually TEACH at all. I'm stopping everything at that moment, and going to show these guys the fundamentals and they are going to stay at that plate until they get it down. Maybe a bit extreme, but if you have watched our baseball team play the past 3 years, this is what we need.

On that last point, I remember Coach L during a presser this year saying that he was amazed at his team's lack of basketball IQ. He said that the coaching staff was assuming the players knew too much, and as silly as it may sound, they had to teach how to catch the basketball properly and how to correctly outlet a pass. I think this is exactly what has been looming over the baseball program that past couple of years. And baseball is one of the slowest sports out there, strategy is so, so important.

2013 Season
Without Jim Morris in the dugout because of an illness, we beat OK State 7-0 in the first round of the Lexington regional in one of the most complete games we played all year. We then were eliminated after losing back to back to Louisville and OK State the next two days. Against Louisville, we had a 1-0 lead off the Big East pitcher of the year going into the 7th until we imploded by giving them 3 runs without them hitting the ball out of the infield (2 HBP, infield hit, 2BB and an error). B-Rad threw a **** of a game and one call on a 3-2 pitch in that inning could have left us escape the 7th still with the lead. OK state then proceeded to kill us 7-1, it never was much of a game.

We have not been to a super-regional since 2010, for 3 ******* years you are going to tell me we are not one of the top sixteen teams in the country, simply ridiculous. Don’t really want to re-visit this, but we dropped 2 out of 3 to BC up in Chestnut Hill. It’s tough to think of an equivalent football loss to try and explain the magnitude behind this; it’d be something like losing to Purdue or Indiana (LOL @PSU) in football, probably even worse. BUT WE LOST TWICE

Starting Pitching: Potential to be one of the best staffs in the nation. B-Rad and Diaz are legitimate aces on any staff. I would guess Suarez will beat Salas out, but it is an awesome situation we are in with our top 4 pitchers. Serious potential of three lefty’s manning our weekend series rotation.

Bryan Radziewski: (R-JR) Short, stocky lefty who came back from shoulder surgery in 2012 and should have been a 1st Team All American last year. Drafted by the Cards in the 29th round, B-Rad went 9-3 with a 1.78 ERA in 14 starts and had 109K in 91 IP. Finished third in the ACC in ERA and was on many 2nd/3rd All-American teams. Very fun to watch, always “pitching backwards” and a true gamer on the mound. Great ACC Tournament start and one of the gutsier starts against Louisville that I have seen in my short Miami baseball history.
Chris Diaz: (JR) Another, shorter lefty who mixes it up well and was better than dominant last year. Went 7-5 last year with a 1.65 ERA (2nd in ACC) and posted 14 quality starts in 16 chances. 78K and only 27BB in his team leading 109.2 IP. Was our “ace” and Friday pitcher last year and seemed to get no run support the entire season. Can’t understand why he was given so few national accolades last year. Perhaps best start of year came against OK State to open regional where he posted a 10K shutout.
Andrew Suarez: (JR) Impressive at opening of new Marlins Park, but missed entire 2012 season with shoulder surgery. Finished 3-5 in 15 GS and posted a 3.95ERA. Third on the team last year with 87IP, Suarez should have the inside track to the last spot of the weekend rotation. 6’2 lefty with some deception in his delivery wouldn’t shock me if Suarez took a jump to the next level. Maybe not Diaz or B-rad level, but somewhere in the middle. Saw him in a game this fall and I was really impressed, velo was really increasing as he was getting comfortable.
Javi Salas: (SR) Had an opportunity to battle for the number 3 spot early in the year, but struggled a bit and moved to weekday duties. Still posted very solid numbers going 5-5 in 11 GS, posting a 3.15 ERA. Scattered 68H in 70IP with 44K/19BB. Drafted by Minnesota in the 38th round, look for Salas to once again to continue to improve and get better just like he has the previous three years. Saw him in the fall for 3 innings, a rough first, but calmed down and looked impressive for last 6 outs Great situation we are in to have Salas and Suarez battling for final weekend spot.

Relief Pitching: For as good as our starters were last year, that is about how bad our bullpen was, maybe even worse. Poor Chris Diaz’s win column. It’d be nice to have a legitimate threat in the bullpen, maybe a guy that is a little whacky and throws in the mid 90’s. We have some solid freshman pitching coming in, but don’t think anyone is that much of a phenom where you could expect solid contribution from them as a freshman. A good bullpen comes from pitching depth, something we have not hand in several years. Hammond and Beauprez, because of their command and velocity maybe could get some burn early in the year.

A.J. Salcines: (SR) Team MVP of 2012 with a 1.40 ERA and 44K in 39 appearances. Was nothing short of abysmal last year. Led team with 28 appearances and posted a 7.28 ERA. 14BB in 29.2 IP (4.3/9IP) although he did manage 30 strikeouts. It’s a good thing they don’t post blown saves. Morris went to him a lot last year, probably too much, but the thing is that we had nobody else to turn to before the 9th inning. I’ve heard only good things about Salcines this fall, but this is certainly one of the biggest question marks going into the year. A solid year could get Salcines some cash in the draft as a future left-handed specialist.
Thomas Woodrey: (SO) Moved to bullpen after starting earlier in the year, one of few who had at least a chance to get the other team out from the pen. Finished 4-0 with a 3.12 ERA. Saw him in a game this fall and he got absolutely shelled, and we are pretty terrible offensively. Somewhat of a deceptive lefty, tops out in the upper 80’s. Nothing personal man, just should not be one of our primary options in the pen.
Adam Sargent: (SR) Righty sidearmer who missed most of last year with shoulder tightness. One of team’s primary options in 2012 when he posted a 2.81 ERA in 27 appearances. I’m just sick of this #bullpenmafia stuff and counting on these “deceptive” sidearm guys throwing 85. Seems like we are a ******* up north school converting projects into sidearmers. Louisville’s closer Nick Burdi was throwing upper 90’s last year in regionals, shouldn’t we be at that level. WTF, been this way for some time now…
Enrique Sosa (SO): Made some non-conference appearances last year, wouldn’t hold my breath, but maybe has the most potential of anyone left. Saw in fall and looked decent, topped out at 92 with a solid CB, but some had some hump in them. Sam Abrams and Ryan Otero both had ERAs over 10 last year in 9 combined appearances. Frank Grandinette: (FR) Had 16 appearances last year, but no longer listed on roster.

Transfers:
Chase Hodson: (JR) Played for two different JUCOs first two years. Probably zero use. Certainly didn’t pass the eye test either.
Daniel Sayles (JR) Transfer from Wauwatosa JUCO (WI) where he was a two way stud there after missing his first year with Tommy John. Posted a 3.77 ERA in 76.1 innings. Only 49K which is extremely alarming IMO. 6’4 lefty so certainly some potential.

Incomers
Derik Beauprez: Huge guy, 6’5 and 215 lbs. Consistent low 90’s topping out at 93. Pretty big time prospect drafted in 25th round by Boston. Ranked 128th by PG last year. Had 10HR and 51RBI in last two seasons in HS. Will be curious to see how Morris uses him this year. Saw for 3 innings and was at 89-91 consistently. Gave up zero runs, but walked two. Seems to lose focus at times with hitters. If he can get his command down (HUGE IF), would be a great end of the bullpen guy at least for this year.
Brad Zunica: Skipped senior year and is an EE. Big time prospect, but he is going to hit for us I think. Can’t see him touching the mound here…never know though.
Dylan White: 6’5 lefty from Sarasota. Ranked no. 92 by MaxPreps and 467 by Perfect Game. Missed JR season with a torn labrum and was All-State last year.
Danny Garcia: Got to see for 3 innings and was 86-89 consistently. Struck out four, 1 ER, walked one and hit Collins with a 0-2 CB. Seemed to overthrow a lot and command was not very sharp. Decent CB, maybe not game ready yet, but certainly liked what I saw for the most part.
Cooper Hammond: Has looked good in fall ball so far and has some of the best HS stats I have ever seen for any sport. Went 9-0 in 56 innings, with 53K, 6BB and 18H. Gave up 1 ER good for a 0.13 ERA. Wow, command like this will get you somewhere.
Bryan Garcia: Class 6A-8A Florida pitcher of the year. 8-1 with a 1.23 ERA and 82 K. Haven’t seen or heard much….

Will try to get offensive preview done by the weekend....

Bryan Garcia is my boy, I actually ran into Laz Rivera today while at UM. What are your thoughts on Laz if you have any?, both of these guys are Columbus products.

Big ups. Still trying to swing a way to escape a wedding I'll be at in Tampa this spring and get down to The Light for the yearly pilgrimage.

Had no idea of who Laz Rivera was before the fall. I kind of figured that Lopez and Hernandez had the middle infield positions wrapped up, but Laz is no slouch. Has pretty nice hands and a solid arm at shortstop from the small sample I saw. Also hit a gapper for a triple.

Best way to put it I guess would be to say that he impressed me the most from the trio of IF we have coming in. Sebastian Diaz, Johnny Ruiz and Laz Rivera. Can't tell you how long it took me to learn to put the first name with the correct last name for those three.

Thanks for this preview of the baseball team. We need to at least make the Super Regionals this year or it would be a disappointment. The basketball team doesn't look like it's going any where near a post season game this year so we need the baseball team to pick up the slack. Can't wait for the season to start.

Yeah Laz is really talented, a very quiet, yes sir, no sir type of kid. He played 3rd base most of last year.

Sorry about how long this took to get up. Always seems to be longer than you originally plan, so I've decided to cut it into two parts, catchers and middle infielders today, then corner infielders and outfielders tomorrow.

Team Preview
Offensive: Hit .258 as a team, good for 222nd out of 296 teams, tied with Penn State, Ohio State and Saint Peter’s. Scored 4.5 runs per game, 230th in the nation. Tied with NJIT and San Jose St. That’s just awful. We’re also losing our offensive MVP Chantz Mack, who led the team in BA, OBP and SB. We also lose Michael Broad, who was nothing short of terrible offensively and defensively his last 3 years, Alex San Juan, who played 52 games at C/DH last year, but hardly played in the postseason, Roger Gonzalez (FR.), backup catcher who just transferred to JUCO Santa Fe College after the Fall semester and Grant Heyman (FR.), who transferred to Southern Nevada after a very bad first year, who I thought was our top incoming freshman besides David Thompson.

Defensive: Dale and Chantz held down the fort in the OF last year, but LF was always a mystery. Not a good mystery either. A platoon of Palmer/Abreu/Heyward will more than likely cover the two corner outfield spots, with Abreu probably being above average defensively, Heyward an average defender (maybe a stretch) and Palmer being very below average. Jacob Heyward is not like his brother, I REPEAT, JACOB HEYWARD IS NOT LIKE HIS BROTHER. Maybe Collins or one of the incoming freshman IF could get a shot if no one pans out from Abreu/Heyward. Our corner infielders are not that good other than Barr, but they are, by far, the most productive offensively of anyone in the lineup. Lopez and Hernandez were both right around average last year. Kennedy is a very, very good defensive catcher and caught most of last year. He will probably catch almost every game this year.

Catcher:
Returners:
Garrett Kennedy: (JR.) Caught most of last year and came on strong at the end, was named to the all regional team. Was on absolute fire. Very good behind the plate and 2rd on team in slugging .387 and OBP .417 and third in average .282. Only player besides Thompson with more than 1 HR, he hit 3.
Newcomers:
Zack Collins: Drafted in the 27th round last year by the Reds. Lefty and plus power. Needs to work on his defense. Saw him catch, play 1st and even LF. It’s clear the staff wants his bat in the lineup somehow, will also DH a lot. Hit some BB’s from what I saw in the fall, including a deep shot to the track in right center, but also looked baffled on some pitches and failed miserably at a bunt attempt. Looks like a natural hitter though, real aggressive.
Carlos Diaz: Incoming freshman who is about as good as it gets defensively. Actually played with him a year in when he was a freshman in HS. Needs to put on weight and work on his offensive game. 1-4 with a K and BB. Smart and knows the game well, also saw 2 errant throws on stolen base attempts.

Middle Infield
Returners:
Brandon Lopez: (SO.) Really thought Lopez had this locked down until I saw Kendall Rodgers tweet that “SS is a major concern for Miami going into 2014”. Jimmy Morris promptly responded with “not a concern, but a real battle.” If I’m Brandon Lopez, I would be very concerned. Lopez was rated the number 13 prospect OVERALL by Baseball America going into last year, but was a little disappointing. Started 58 of 62 games, but only hit .243 with an OBP of .322 and slugged .265. Had 44 hits and only 2 XBH. 19BB and 37K in 200 plate appearances is not going to get it done with the style of ball he needs to be playing. 12 errors in 254 chances for .953 fielding percentage. Only 5 SB in 7 attempts. All of those numbers need to improve drastically if he wants to keep his job next year. Biggest alarm for me was when I saw him play this fall and he was not really any noticeably bigger from last year. And with a 6’1, 165ish frame, he has tons of room for growth. Another guy I had really high hopes for at the start of last year and really underperformed.
Alex Hernandez: (SR.) JUCO transfer last year and only player besides Chantz to start every game last year. Ranked among team leaders for many offensive stats, but very average numbers. Don’t think he is a starting infielder for a team that would be a favorite to go to Omaha, not that we have many of them anyway. .267/.358/.351 slash line, has some gap to gap power and led the team with 16 doubles. 4-11 in SB attempts. Solid, but very average fielder. Steady player, but needs to improve in all facets of the game to make sure he has a spot.
Newcomers:
Laz Rivera: Incoming freshman who really impressed me from the fall games I saw. Nothing amazing from his HS accomplishments, but just looked like a smooth player with a good feel for the game. Only saw a handful of AB, but had a nice gapper to left center and made all the plays defensively. Had a better arm than I was expecting. Smooth, soft hands and a quick release from deep shortstop. If Lopez or Hernandez slip at all, look for Laz to get a shot. Just can’t see him playing third because of the offensive production from Thompson.
Sebastian Diaz: Similar to Laz’s description, and still pretty impressive from the small sample size I saw. Had a nice opposite field gap triple and a single to RF. Also battled for an 8 pitch BB. Played SS, but didn’t impress me as much as Laz. Also played some LF. Aggressive as anyone I saw on the base paths.
Johnny Ruiz: Lefty, most impressive HS accolades out of these 3 with 10HR and 61RBI total his JR+SR years of HS. 2 hard hit balls and K I saw. Looked by far the worst out of the incoming 3 freshman in the field, but probably the most impressive with the bat. Depends on how good his bat is, they’ll find a spot if he needs to be in the lineup.
Edward Michaelangi: Eligible this year after NCAA transfer rules, I guess we will see.

24 days till first pitch at the Light. 31 days till U*** comes to town.

Credibilty skyrocketed with the observation that Jacob Heyward is not his brother. Not even close. Only hope he develops and matures in the program.

Corner Infielders:
Returners:
Brad Fieger: (SR.) Was a little disappointing last year after a promising freshman campaign and an impressive sophomore year. Has hit .280, .295 and .270. 28 strikeouts and only 16 walks in nearly 200 plate appearances. 29R, 4HR in 2012 and only 14R, 0HR in 2013. Started at 1st than moved to 3rd in 2012, and then did the opposite in 2013. All this tells you is that Fieger is not the good defensively, neither are any of our corner infielders that can hit the ball. A lot of the lineup’s success will hinge on how productive Fieger is offensively.
David Thompson: (SO.) Lived up to his hype and led the team in HR 6, RBI 46, SLG .461 and total bases starting only 51 out of 62 games. Trimmed any fat he had and added noticeable muscle. Started at 1B last year, but moved to third in middle of year. Average defender at best, but the best of Fieger, Collins and Zunica. Ball simply comes off his bat differently than everyone else. Probably not quite at O’Brien or Yasmani level offensively YET.
Chris Barr: (SO.) Saw a lot of action as a freshman last year (55 games, 29 started) as a defensive replacement at 1st and as a pinch runner. Third on the team in runs scored. Only hit .217, but had an OBP of .353. Drew 24 freebies in only 140 plate appearances. Abysmal slugging percentage of .248, only had two XBH in 25 hits last year. 7-10 SB and a .991 fielding percentage in 335 opportunities. This is a smart baseball player. We do not have many of them on the team, it’s a shame he wasn’t blessed with more natural talent.
Newcomers
Brad Zunica: Updated on team roster, now only listed as 1B, as opposed to 1B/RHP. Beauperez is not listed as only a RHP as opposed to 1B/RHP. Lefty who hit .468 with 8 HR his senior year of HS. Very raw at 1B, but may DH some.

Outfielders:
Returners:
Dale Carey: (SR.) I could write an entire page on Dale. Sensational end of freshman year campaign, then was our CF and hit .271 for a solid sophomore year. Only hit .192 (28-146) last year and frustrating would be the best way to describe it. Dale has some serious battles with some pitchers, fouling off a couple straight back, but would seem to always lose them ending in a strikeout. Seemed to happen at least once every game. He is by far the best OF on our team and quite possibly may be the fastest. Second on the team with 12SB last year, had an impressive .283OBP for such a low average and led the team with 12 sacrifices. It was such a mental thing at the end of last year, was tough to watch sometimes. As I said with Fieger, a lot of the offensive success will hinge upon Dale’s success.
Tyler Palmer: (SR.) Michael Broad like here. No spot and is just good enough offensively where you try to find a spot for him somewhere, but he does not have a spot. Has started at 1B/2B/3B/LF/RF in his time here. Hit .268 in 48 games last year, with only 4XBH (all doubles), 14 free passes and 21 K in 156 opportunities, 11 steals and 10 sacrifices. Like I said, just good enough stats to warrant being in the lineup, but he also posted a .947 fielding percentage. He is a travesty in the outfield and an even worse bunter, but bunts BY FAR the most of anyone on the team. I love the idea, but his technique and fundamentals are obviously horribly wrong. Athlete and speed, but minimal baseball instincts. If he plays a lot, regardless of any position, we probably will not be doing well, meaning our incoming freshman, specifically Collins, Heyward and Abreu have not made enough of an impact.
Ricky Eusebio: (SO.) One of my favorite names to say. Played in 47 games, 23 starts, but mainly used as a defensive outfield replacement late in games. .221/.315/.253 slash line. Had 8 steals on 9 attempts. Look for Eusebio to be used in a similar role this year. Kind of like Chris Barr in the OF.
John Lawroski: (SR.) Looks like a nice kid and tries hard, not D1 talent or instincts, at all.
Newcomers:
Jacob Heyward: Everybody relax and shut up, he may be the brother of Jason Heyward, but a lot of people have said for a while he is not on his level. His hitting has improved a lot and I would not be surprised for him to have a successful career here, but if anyone thinks we are getting a 5 tool, game changing player here, we are not. Hit a HR in the fall and has a solid stroke. Also saw him swipe 2nd and 3rd on three pitches which was very encouraging. Completely butchered a ball in RF really badly and not a very impressive arm. Unfair to him, but you kind of expect and compare it to his brother’s cannon. 6’3 so will give us some power that we desperately need. Had 15HR and 72RBI in his last two seasons of HS ball. He’ll be fighting with a bunch of other people for a corner outfield spot. Played mostly RF in the fall.
Willie Abreu: Drafted in the 13th round, 6’4 and projectable. Lefty who has above average speed and will hit a couple HR this year. Our top recruit and hopefully will prove himself worthy of a starting corner spot. Hit over .500 in HS and had 4 triples and 6HR his senior year. Only saw him live one time in the fall, but has a great build already, especially only being two months into your first semester of college. Pulled a triple down the line and looked smooth around the bases. Haven’t heard too much about his defense, but has to already be one of our better defensive outfielders. Very excited for this kid.

So basically we still have a bunch of soft throwing lefties, and only one established bat (Thompson), with a bunch of talented, yet unproven freshman. Should be interesting.

Pretty much. But the soft throwing lefties are dominant. Kennedy is the only one that could be near the conversation of Thompson.

Had a very promising freshman class last year and few showed that actual potential. I want to think and hope it is going to be different this year, but if it is a repeat of last year, all eyes have to be pointed at the staff. As if they are not already.

Hurricanes Baseball @CanesBaseball
#Canes ranked in Top 20 in three polls - Baseball America (#16), Collegiate Baseball (#13) & now Perfect Game (#20)

FSU= 4, 5 and 6
UF= 23, 16 and 15

so a guess at the starting lineup:

C- Kennedy
1B- Collins
2B- Hernandez
SS- Lopez
3B- Thompson
LF- Palmer (possibly Eusebio)
CF- Carey
RF- Abreu
DH- Fieger

*Zunica gets in lineup eventually.

Rotation:
BRad
Diaz
Suarez

Closer: Hammonds or Salcines

i guess Suarez's fastball now hitting 93 changes some things up.

More talking about B-Rad and Diaz. Suarez has been injured and still a little unproven. Everyone is really talking him up

Yeah Matt Porter had an interesting article on him the other day.

Ranked 23rd in nation on Baseball America's pre-season draft eligible list. Topped out at 96 this fall.

Potential of this staff is through the roof.
