2001 Canes vs 2008 Lions

I'm not very knowledgable on exactly what went wrong with the 08 Detroit team.

Anyway, if the Lions forced Dorsey to throw the ball 45 times, they would win easily. Dorsey is one of the most mediocre QBs ever to win a national title. (And Dorsey would have 3 national titles if it weren't for the BCS computers and Terry Porter- that's how amazingly loaded the rest of the team was.)

We could only beat the Lions if they allowed us to run the ball down their throats.

IDK why TemplarCane is saying the oline would have been a liability. The 01 oline was amazing. They allowed something like one or two sacks all season.
It’s simple.

The Miami OL had one player, Bryant McKinnie, who was a legitimate NFL player. I should not need to explain the talent discrepancy between the NFL Detroit Lions and any college football team’s defensive front seven.

We brag that there were 30(?) pro's on that 2001 team. Well, there were 53 pro's on that '08 Lion team.
Pride would also be a factor in favor of the Lions.

Detroit wins, but I would take my Canes and the points.
The claim of a roster of 20+ ‘future professional players’ is statistically true but misleading. How many players went on to the NFL after the 2001 season and made a roster and a career? A few stars like Reed, Shockey, McKinnie, and Portis. Dre likely could have turned pro if eligible. Others like Taylor, Winslow Jr, Gore, Rolle, and Wilfork were 18-19 year old true freshman. DJ Williams and Vilma were underclassmen. They had not developed as college players, let alone ready to compete against veteran NFL players.

QB: Daunte Culpepper
RB: Kevin Smith, Rudi Johnson
WR: Calvin Johnson, Roy Williams, Shaun McDonald.
TE: John Owens/Michael Gaines
NFL OL

vs Miami defense.

Who is matching up with and shutting down Calvin Johnson? He torched NFL defenses even that terrible season of 2008.

I suppose coker puts Mike Rumph on Calvin Johnson and Phillip Buchannon on Roy Williams. They going to exploit the height advantages with two 6’5 WRs.

Kevin Smith and Rudi Johnson were average NFL RBs but they still were NFL RBs.

Daunte Culpepper wasn’t a hoe in the NFL.

Bruh, we couldn’t cover CJ when he didn’t have a QB while at GT! Lol

No....they allowed more than 1 or 2....Mckinnie didn't allow one.....As amazing as that OL was...they got their Sh*t pushed in during the 03 NC game, by a Mediocre Ohio St DL....

Dorsey was Mediocre??...39-2 (really 40-1) is mediocre??....In the summer of 99 he Tore up a Team full of AAs at Greentree....I can name other CFB QBs who Won a NC that were far more mediocre than Dorsey....including Torretta...

Agree.
I was being a bit sarcastic with the 30 number.
Forget the starters.
The depth and special teams talent matchup is no bueno.

From what I've heard and what i got from my 3 minute conversation with Gino, he was a great guy.
He doesn't crack the top-5 of Miami QB's though.
I would take Walsh over Dorsey.
Half his opponents (12) were ranked in the top-20, 10 in the top-11, and he won them all*.

But to say that Dorsey was "Mediocre" is ludicrous...Mediocre QBs don't go 39-2....and should have played in 3 straight NCs....regardless of the talent around him...and his Physical restrictions (see Kosar)...

Anyone who thinks 01 UM doesn't score atleast 1 TD are crazy....Mcgahee...Portis...Dre...Gore...Shockey...Mckinnie....etc...were NFL ready that yr....I have No doubt they score atleast 1 TD....

How many NC winning QBs get drafted in the 7th round like Dorsey did? I’m sure very few. For God’s sake, even Craig Krenzel (who won his NC over Dorsey) was a 5th rounder.

He might have been better than Toretta (I’d argue they were about the same), but that would probably be about it as far as NC winning QBs over the last 30 years I wouldn’t take over Dorsey.

Citing Dorsey’s record without mentioning the talent he played alongside is ridiculous. If you mention his 39-2 (should be 40-1 record), you might as well judge Larry Coker by his 24-1 (should be 25-0) record.

Dorsey made his teammates better, despite how talented many of them were. The mark of a great player.

Watch his final drive against FSU in 2000....Lol....Mediocre my ***...and as a Soph...Had full command of the GOAT CFB team at 19yrs old....and I'm talking FULL command...had an excellent ability to read defenses....his time watching Film is Legendary...That FSU 2000 team was coming off of a NC appearance....All this Dorsey had no arm BS....Was it Testerverde's??...Of course not...but tell that to FSU and UFs DBs as he shredded them...

Agreed.

And no surprise he is coaching in the NFL.

So he had one big drive after blowing a 17-0 lead at home surrounded by the best talent in CFB history. So what? If he hadn’t blown the 17 point lead and only ended up winning by 3, it’s doubtful FSU gets the title bid.
