15 million

this is awful for college football as we know it and I hope with deep conviction that these overpaid coaches fail miserably and the football programs go into bankruptcy.

I know many feel sports income/costs, taxes and overall college costs aren't linked. They absolutely are. There's a lot of creative accounting in every business and colleges are no different. The cost at Penn State has roughly doubled since i've been there. Medical costs are a big reason but anyone walking around that campus and sees the rest of the costs - new buildings, integrated tech, roads, arena and overall operating costs.

The cost of college skyrocketed bc the government got involved in loans and number of administrators keeps rising along with their salaries. Add that to new construction and you get we have now. Tax payers are footing that bill.

Athletic budgets don’t support schools, they are almost completely separate entities.

To simplify my point, athletics aren’t there to support the school. They are there to be self sufficient and pay for themselves. They are there to attract students and gain exposure to the school.

I do agree about Oregon and find it interesting that they haven’t extended. My opinion is that Oregon does not overspend on their coach. Look at the history of their hires - they’re mostly in house and affordable. That appears to be their MO.

Finally, I do think we’ll be in the 100m market for a coach. That’s the market. Mario MAY be able to get a 8-9m gig but that’s right there at the 100m mark.

Also, people forget to divide by the number of years. Sportswriters and sportsporsters both post the TOTAL CASH OUTLAY to create shock and awe.

Bottom line, if Richt didn't retire, we'd be paying close to $6 million per year (or more if we had won the ACC). Mel Tucker is getting $9.5 million per year. Soooo...Miami needs to bump up a few million per year? When the University is promising an extra 20 to 30 million per year? And when we cannot control the market?

Yeah, let's not worry about the "total value" of coaching contracts right now. It's Monopoly money. It's federal deficit money. Let's just do what we need to do.
 
Here’s something I don’t think we’ve discussed: at what point are we overpaying for Mario? Obviously very few (if any) know the details of the contract and if it’s changed given last night’s whirlwind, so what do you think he deserves?

Hyper-inflation? UM was raising tuition 9.9% PER YEAR in the 1980s.

This has been going on for a long time...

And right now, the extra money is coming from TV. Meaning, your cable bill. Oh, but CIS is just FULL of cord-cutters and people who yell at DirecTV reps until they get a price reduction.

This is like the conversation about what "fry guys" should be paid at McDonalds.

None of this matters. What is the market price, and can the employers afford to pay more? Any conversation on "worth" or "deserves" is just not taking into account what is happening in all of the non-305 area codes.

We need to get about 1.5 at least invested in recruiting...big money on staff and facilities alone will not get it done.

if people think lane isn’t gonna be asking for close to 10 if not that number from us I got a beach house I can sell you in Idaho

Report from a few weeks back was UM was fine with dipping into the $400 million annual profit on the hospital side. The school has money.

The funny part, by terms of his contract, Nick Saban will now become the highest paid coach in FBS. So it just gets dumber and dumber money in college football.
