Fits right in with the last two months of Miami football
Honestly, this is just an uninspired move. We can all recognize that while the program doesn't have enough money to go hire away a DC to be the 10th coach, like Ohio State did, there is a middle ground between that and hiring a guy who was a quality control coach on our staff. If we wanted to add a coach for our LBs, there has to be a good coach at a smaller program that has coached LBs before, would be affordable and would jump at the chance to come to Miami. Other than Kul, our position coaches on the defensive side of the ball have all had 0 years of experience as assistants before taking positions on our staff. Mike Rumph is the 2nd most experienced position coach on our defensive staff.
The coaching and development of our players becomes even more important if we're not getting all the guys we want in recruiting, and I'm having a harder time convincing myself that our guys on defense, outside of the DL, are getting the level of coaching we need to be successful.
Is this the end of the world? Of course not, but it's disappointing that we weren't able to add someone to the staff that has proven himself in either coaching or recruiting.
It's an unexciting hire but let's see how he does. Mainstream fan opinion on Richt's staff 2 years ago was that Kul was a home run, Searels/Hartley/Richt Jr/Banda were questionable, and Diaz was terrible. We were ****ting on the donk for losing that USF recruit WR to TEN. Last year we were ****ting on the donk when he struck out on his top targets. As it turned out both he and Searels have been a very good recruiters and a solid coaches. Banda and Hartley are easily the 2 best recruiters on the staff. Diaz has been a solid DC and everyone's favorite hire Kul got killed in recruiting this cycle.
I don't know Patke from a hole in the wall but I do see that around CFB young energetic coaches like Banda/Hartley seem to make the best recruiters. Let's give him a chance. Richt isn't hiring him for no reason.

Not about Money. Peep this: Alabama hired Texas-San Antonio defensive coordinator Pete Golding. They hired experience and texas roots. We hired a Church Deacon. This is on MR......

Diaz is far, far, far from a solid DC. Searels sucks **** as a Teacher.
You guys still don't know Coach Richt, do you? He is going to do it his way...ride or die, he is bringing in "his" guys. He doesn't care about national perception or any of that jazz. If he thinks a young guy cn be solid, then he is bringing him on. I don't agree or disagree, but I better **** see results on the field next season...starting with improvement in the offensive play calling
man looking at that defensive coaching staff, how could a recruit not wanna play for them.
the entirety of college football thinks diaz is a gimmick
rumph - who?
banda - who?
patke - who?
kul - supposedly the best, yet he's almost as bad a recruiter as rumph is

Exactly, folks around here act like the Recruits don't have eyes and ears. The entire D Staff should be fired and replaced with Tried and Truly Experienced Coaches. Some Recruits would rather ride the bench for years at a quality program than sign with an incompetent staff like ours.

Disagree with the Banda comment; he was heavily involved in a lot of targets we missed on (Jobe, Surtain, Campbell come to mind). Hartley is a beast.
