Can't read the article since it's behind a paywall, but it seems they could build a whole brand new facility for that kind of money instead of just updating the old place. ***** the Gaytor and the Noles, spend more money on their money pits.

This is a ridiculously wrong way to look at things.

"The cost of ownership", or in this case, a major renovation, is only that high due to current-day construction costs. Meanwhile, most of that stadium is roughly the same as when I walked into it the first time in 1986.

Yes, they added the north end zone section in 1991. Other than that, the University of Florida has reaped enormous sums of money over the years, while doing very little in the way of improvements, for decades.

Sure, $1.5 billion is eye-popping. But that is the price for decades of neglect.

I was there last year. Stadium felt like i was back in th1980s
 
I mean, wouldn’t ownership rights include keeping the revenue from tickets, parking, concessions, and etc.? I bet having your own stadium is pretty lucrative? No, OP?

I bet universities are bringing in upwards of $50m per season from stadium revenues.

And it’s not a one time outlay. This has to be done in part or in whole every generation.

I live near UT. The only events taking place in the Longhorns stadium are the football games. It sits vacant the rest of the year.

Now their basketball arena - the Moody Center - that’s lucrative.

Their athletic department lost money overall last year however due to revenue sharing.

correct. they made a huge profit off of their own stadium. That's why universities can afford to renovate for 5 times that much.

Same with UF. They have concerts and other events in the ODome. Swamp isn’t used for anything else.
