    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

The main thing is that they are young. There are no seniors, and Donaldson is the only junior in the mix. So 7 of the Top 8 guys are going to be here for a while. My expectation is that they will be much better at the end of the season than the beginning. Gaynor and Scaife are the guys who need...

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

I’m not going to go down this road, so you can have the last word after this post. The OP was a quote from our last All-American center hyping up Gaynor. You then made a negative reference to me hyping Gaynor. I stand by my hype, and I’m glad Romberg is on the Gaynor bandwagon. During camp...

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

Are Searels’ other bizarre personnel choices on the film? When I watch last year’s games, I struggle to find a reason why Mahoney and Jones were playing over Boulware, for example. Nobody hyped Gaynor as an All-American from Day 1. He was doing exactly what I expected for half the season. Then...

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

Except he did make a start, and would have started more games if Searels didn’t go to Mahoney in the middle of the year. Nobody said he was going to start 13 games and make All-Conference as a freshman. The move to Mahoney surprised me. I am glad that mistake has been rectified.

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

He was doing exactly what I "hyped" him to do for the first half of the season. His playing time reflected his camp performance. After that, Mahoney stepped into that role. My view is that Mahoney never should have played. I still believe that. Gaynor is now our starter, and Mahoney left town...

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

His balance/agility is what caused him problems. When he was squared up, he could knock back guys like Kendrick Norton.

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

It ultimately played out with Manny picking Gaynor over Mahoney. Which should have been the choice all along. Gaynor struggled like any young lineman but he also sprung some big runs. He played in 10 games and was on the field for key moments (such as the FSU comeback). It was an unusual amount...

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

He was our sixth lineman as a true freshman, and they even tried to carve out playing time at FB to get him on the field. He played in ten games, which is a ton for someone his age. Of course he was going to struggle at times. My expectation, which remains, is that he ends up being a longtime...

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

Gaynor did start a game as a true freshman and was our sixth lineman for most of the year. I thought he'd make more of an impact, but Searels had a much higher opinion of Mahoney than I did. It looks like Manny was not much of Mahoney fan.

    Romberg discusses Corey Gaynor

Interesting comments below from Romberg. I've been a Gaynor fan for a while and believe he is the key to the OL. Everybody suffered when he went down in spring: “You know who did that for me? The leader of the offensive line, Corey Gaynor,” Romberg said. “He told kids ‘shut up, we got a legend...
