Miami Hurricanes safety Zechariah Poyser spoke to the media ahead of the Hurricanes matchup against the FAMU Rattlers. Check out everything he had to say down below:
On the secondary’s performance against Stanford: I think it went well for the first game. First game is the first game. You’re gonna have a lot of mistakes and stuff like that, but overall I think we did well. Of course, we had a lot to improve on, watching the tape and stuff like that. So, overall, I think it went well. But, that’s first game, and I think we’ll get better as the season goes on.
On Omar Thornton’s violence against Stanford: He showed a lot of clips that might not show up on the stat sheet. I think he played really well. I think he showed violence, setting edges and spilling blocks. So, I think it showed up a lot on Friday, and I think as the season goes on it’ll only get worse. So, I think it went well.
On preparing for FAMU on a short week: We go hard in our preparation. I think we go day by day and just going all in on our preparation. So, we just come in every day and just work, and we trust the coaches and what they got for us.
On Malachi Toney being left in single coverage: I like to call it, it’s almost impossible. I went back and watched the whole game, and it was crazy to see. That’s a tough challenge. I think he’s the best in the world. So, I mean, you can’t — there’s no answer to covering him.
On returning to Hard Rock Stadium: Man, I’m excited. It’s a blessing. I love being in Hard Rock. That’s a dream come true. I love our fans, and I’m very excited.
On preparing for FAMU’s fast-paced offense: They do a good job of going fast. We do that in our preparation in practice. Our scout team does a good job of going fast for us, and we try to make it harder in practice than it is gonna be in the game. So, I mean, that’s how we do it. I think we do it in practice, so it’ll be easy for the game.
On his takeaway opportunities against Stanford: I feel like I had a lot of opportunities to take away the ball. Coach Will, Coach Terry, they’re big on me about getting takeaways. The ball is where that money at. So, I feel like just being there, first game. I think as the season goes on, I’ll take the ball away a lot. So, I mean, just being there, I feel like, just first game. I feel like I get better as the season goes on.
On tackling with the new rules: We talk about that a lot. Coach Harris talks with us about that a lot too. The big hits, you get a ‘whoo’ from the crowd, but you could be thrown out of the game. So, Coach Harris does a good job of telling us to lead with our shoulder and stuff. Shows us a lot of clips of what to do and what not to do. So, I think Coach Harris helps us a lot with that. It is very hard in today’s world not to overly, kill somebody. But, yeah, Coach Harris does a great job of teaching us what to do and what not to do.
