WR Raines has family tie to UM, talks Canes

Stefan Adams
2021 West Orange (NJ) 3-star WR Jayson Raines earned his 4th ACC offer in late January when outside linebackers coach Jon Patke visited him at school to give him the good news that he had a scholarship from the Miami Hurricanes.

“My coach called me out of class and I walked into my coach’s office and saw the bright orange jacket and I was like ‘That’s Miami!’,” Raines said. “[Patke] was saying how they watched my tape, they really liked me, and they wanted to offer me a scholarship. They wanted me to come down for one of the spring practices or the spring game.”

Following that meeting with Patke, Raines said he actually scheduled a visit to come down to Florida and watch the Hurricanes’ spring game in April, but it was cancelled because of the coronavirus concerns.

“It was incredible, it was something that I thought would never really happen being from Jersey,” Raines said of the UM offer. “But people are recognizing me now, it made me very popular at school, and it made some noise for sure. It was great, especially with my family ties, so it meant something.”

The family tie Raines is referencing? That would be Alfredo Roberts, a two-time national champion at UM as a tight end in the 80’s that was drafted into the NFL; Roberts currently coaches TE’s for the LA Chargers.

“One of my mom’s cousins played for the U, Alfredo Roberts. So I have a family tie to the Canes, and it will be interesting to come down there and see it,” Raines said. “I actually have a lot of family down in Miami, I was born in Orlando, Florida. A lot of my mom’s family is in Miami, I just went down there for Christmas. So, I have that family connection and that connection to the area already.”

Other schools involved with Raines that have offered include Maryland, Syracuse, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Pitt, and Vanderbilt, while Michigan has recently gotten in contact with the West Orange star. Most of his Power 5 attention started coming when the calendar flipped to 2020, so Raines said he didn’t get a chance to feel out most of his new options before the shutdowns.

“I don’t really have any leaders since I haven’t seen many schools yet and I can’t really decide,” Raines said. “Some schools I was planning on visiting would be Michigan, they invited me to come up. I’ve already visited Maryland, Rutgers, Wake Forest, I want to go to Vanderbilt and Pitt. Probably after a couple more trips, I’ll be able to figure out my top 5 or so. I was planning on doing that around May or June, but I’m not sure now with everything going on. I hope to have it by the summer.”

One of Raines’ more recent trips was to see Rutgers, and he described the visit as having plenty of personal time with the Scarlet Knights’ staff.

“It was more of an individual type of visit with a teammate,” Raines said. “They drove us around campus and showed us what it was like, they took us to the indoor facilities and the athletic facilities. We had a one-on-one talk with our position coaches and got to take pictures at the end. It was awesome.”

With a tentative decision timetable to choose a school just before his senior season starts, Raines will also sign in December, though he does not plan to enroll early.

“Some coaches won’t always be there at the school, so I need to like the environment of the school and the education,” Raines said of some factors he’ll be using. “Also, the offense they run, I want to see if it’s compatible with me and how they incorporate receivers of my size.”

As a junior in 2019, Raines put up 700 yards and 12 TD’s for the 7-4 Mountaineers.

“Things went very well my junior year, especially after having a down sophomore year,” Raines said. "I led my team to their first playoff win in who knows how many years. I led the team in receiving touchdowns and I performed very well, especially in the first year with a new coach and in the toughest public school division in New Jersey.”

What will Raines be working on heading into the 2020 season?

“I’m working on my speed and my route running. I’m already a big, physical receiver that can go up top, and I can stretch the field.”

Taller WRs who can move well are always a good thing, I think he's a take. With the right conditioning and improvement in his routes, this is a guy who can be the WR1 for a team.

I'm not complaining/*****!ng, BUT Miami needs to recruit better, I'm not saying 3 star recruits aren't good BUT Miami has to start recruiting and fighting for the best of the best!! Why recruit a kid out of state who isn't the best of the best, why recruit plan b and c type OOS? The OOS recruit's should be the best of the best, at the end of the day FL has plenty of plan b and c recruit's to pick from.. NOW IF.... THIS KID IS THE BEST OF THE BEST, I'm all in on recruiting him.. Just wanted to get this off my chest!!

Was Ed Reed considered the best of best coming out of HS? Sometimes players develop late and it all clicks.

Different times, and definitely different talent evaluators. We can't use the Ed Reed argument for every single person. JJ and Butch were arguably are two best talent evaluators in program's history. We haven't had that for quite some time. On top of that, our player development has been **** poor for well over a decade. Maybe w/ a different staff, I would agree w/ you.....but this regime has shown an inability to identify under the radar guys and develop them.

Golden, for all the flack we give him, actually didn't do too bad for his under the radar kids (RJ, Norton, Feliciano, Walford, Njoku, Gunter, Waters, Isidora, Jenkins, Gus, Redwine, and Jackson). It can be said, since Golden's kids have left, we've gotten progressively worst. Who would've thunk it?

I agree and disagree with that. I think the defensive side has good evaluators and can develop pretty well. A lot of al golden recruits were developed well here (as you can see with the guys you listed) and I think those guys would be even further developed if they were here for 4 years. I think (again on the defensive side) they have been evaluating well but a lot of times other teams swoop in and that leads to playing well as team and having a good record. I’m curious to see the development of the defense this year bc I think the defense this year has more potential than recent years. If Jon ford can keep developing, if nesta can get consistent play, if McCloud and the young guys step up, we should be really good. I want to hold off judgement on the offense bc it has been **** poor but i think it will be good this year so I want to see the development of the o-line and wrs this year. I think overall the staff has done pretty well evaluating and developing but we need to take it up a notch. I do agree that there is still plenty of room to grow in the evaluation and development department bc obviously they’re not jj or butch but I think they have done pretty well.

The thing with Golden is he relied too much on Player Development and not putting an emphasis on recruiting top players to develop.

I agree.. But when I look at MIAMI recruiting sites, all I see "Miami the gives recruit his first Power 5 offer" or "Miami is the second or third or fourth etc.. Power 5 school to offer this kid" MANNNN, where are all the studs at? Miami seems like they are always looking for hiden gems, THEN we see recruits around FL say "Miami isn't really showing me love or much interest" and it's the recruits every other program in the country is after!!

BottomLine... MIAMI can't build this program with a bunch of unknowns and gems.. We need the best of the best, NOW at the end of the day if we sign one or two gems it's okay BUT half the entire class can't be this.. Then not to mention, we don't have this super staff to develop these mid-level player's.. THIS IS WHY MIAMI HAVE ONLY WON THEIR DIVISION ONCE SINCE ENTERING THE ACC..

And it seems like the norm here in Coral Gables.. We get the staff out on the road to RECRUIT but they are offering plan b and c level player's.. It like they are scared to compete for top player's.. All the college's in the country can come to SoFla for talent, but MIAMI acts like they can't do the same and go after the top player's from other states.. Ppl here say all the time, Louisiana recruits are locks to go to LSU, there are just much top player's in Louisiana as there are in SoFla, SO WHAT LSU can't get them all!!

I think Miami main issue that nobody talks about is the lack of money in the Assistant Coach Pool. We dont have a P5 staff at a school like Miami because we cant afford it. IMO we have a very good G5 staff but not a staff that even compares to the staffs of the past here. And honestly we dont have a staff that can compete for National Championships in Todays College Football.

I agree with you that we should fight for the best, but are you making that comment about this young because he’s a 3 star or because from looking at his highlight reel you don‘t think he’s special. You know there are underrated 3 stars and overrated 4 stars. So is your comment more general about 3 stars v 4/5 stars, or more specific to this young man?

I wasn't referring to this young man per say, but I feel we've been lending our rosters with too many developmental players, but then we get mad when they don't pan out.

Some 3 stars are underrated b/c they haven't been to camps, don't play for a powerhouse school, etc.; however, I just don't trust this staff's eye. Matter of fact, why is Patke offering this kid? This should be Likens. We've heard way too many times on this board since Golden that "so and so CAN develop into a nice player." So my point is due to our lack of player development, and success....it would behoove us to try to fight for the blue chip kids who are already there v. fighting for so many developmental kids.

Oh I agree. Golden was an @$$hole, and he couldn't get top players once his sales pitch wore off. He had no choice but to go after the next tier, but when he did, at least it worked.

Golden was a jagbag but his boy Dorito was a slapdick. For all those who don't know me, a slapdick is worse than a jagbag.

Hold up Richards was committed to Golden then bailed when he got canned then recommitted to Richt so technically you could say Richards was a Golden guy.

Yes, but b/c 247 had him w/ a new primary recruiter after he decommited, I just acquiesced to Richt's staff. But you are correct...Richards is technically Golden's, and that would push his overall recruited players as starters on the roster higher during 2016-2017 and validate my point further.
