WR Dixon Enjoys Experience at The Opening

Tito Benach
There were plenty of South Florida athletes that made the trip to The Opening in hopes of putting their skills on display. One of the few Miami receivers there was Dwyer’s Johnnie Dixon.

Dixon had a great time learning from NFL rookies and veterans such as EJ Manuel, Tavon Austin and Demaryius Thomas.

“It was very cool being around a lot of the guys, getting to listen to Bo Jackson, Tavon Austin and guys like that.”

The 6’0" 190 pound receiver noted that the competition levels were very high with both the Sparq testing and the 7 on 7s.

“The Sparq testing was really competitive, but I wasn’t really concerned with that because that doesn’t define a football player. The 7 on 7 was fun, the first two games I did well, but after that I didn’t play much, but it was definitely fun.”

Although The Opening gives an opportunity for players to show off their talents, it’s also time for current commits to help their schools by doing a little recruiting of their own.

Dixon said he spoke with multiple prospects who were trying to sway him to their school.

“(David) Cornwell from Alabama, I talked to Brad (Kaaya). A lot of Ohio State cornerbacks and receivers.”

Kaaya is one of the many Hurricane commits who is doing his part to make this class better and the Dwyer playmaker enjoys speaking to him.

“He is a cool kid, we talked a lot over twitter. He is cool, he doesn’t pressure me a lot about the recruiting stuff. He is just a good friend to have.”

However, it doesn’t seem like Kaaya is the only Miami pledge trying to recruit the speedy receiver.

“Joseph Yearby got to me too a little bit at The Opening. He’s a quiet kid, pretty good too, I can’t take away that from him.”

One prospect that really surprised Dixon was North Carolina receiver Braxton Berrios, who he gave credit to on Twitter.

“We just started contacting each other over twitter. The dude is a freak, no matter of his size, he is pretty good.”

Dixon announced that his top two schools are Miami and Ohio State and originally had plans of trying to commit in the near future, but it seems like he has put those plans off.

“I’m not gonna make a decision before the season. I’ll probably make a decision before signing day, somewhere in the middle of my season.”

The Hurricanes remain as one of his top schools due to their consistent recruiting efforts dating back to when he was a junior.

“I have a great relationship with Miami, they’ve been coming hard since day one and they’re still coming hard.”

When asked if the recruiting by other prospects such as Brad Kaaya, Joseph Yearby and KC McDermott will affect Dixon’s decision, he did admit it’s helping.

“They’re making an effect on me. I mean ultimately I have to make a decision by myself, but those guys right there I love them.”

Sounds like he wants to see how the team looks before he commits. Win and we get recruits. Win with ruthlessness and we get elite recruits.

Hey Pete if Dixon commits to miami. Do you think miami will take lane if he wanted in as well

Dixon sounds like he'll be the first Dwyer kid headed to Miami since Butler.

How much better is Lane than these other guys? Is he on a different level entirely? I can't evaluate just from highlights and watching drills.

I have heard many that know more about football than I do state Dixon isn't far off from Lane at all. Really want this kid badly, don't let *** get you with the next Percy Harvin BS.

I wasn't very impressed by Lane at the Opening 7on7 that I saw. However it was from limited footage and you don't get to see much of his route running. He just didn't seem to separate from the defenders much.
