Vernon on Hurtt, Hill, Pannunzio (Re Shapiro)

Problem2

How is this worse than Tressel, the actual head coach, covering up what the players were doing? Tressel got punished and OSU got off light and there is no reason it shouldn't be the same for us.[/
Agreed

Shannon also made it very clear multiple times to stay away from Shapiro. I would guess that might have at least played a part in why Hurtt was let go too, but either way, this isn't an institutional problem. Shannon tried to keep kids and coaches clear, the compliance department did too, to the point Shapiro wanted to get in an altercation with Miami's compliance officer. He was not just an overzealous booster, he was malignant and had an agenda.

Certainly Tressel hiding it is not good, but from what we know, he didnt actively take them to the people providing the benefits. Even more importantly, he didnt bring recruits to them. It would appear that Hurtt and Hill did bring the kids to Shapiro. Now hopefully, the University can show they didnt and shouldnt have known, but I would argue, bringing recruits to the benefits is worse than conveniently ignoring it.

Here is what I've learned in following college football for over 30 years.

1) The NCAA protects it's cash cow universities. Certain schools are above the law and if/when they do get caught with their pants down they receive a virtual slap on the wrist.

2) Miami is the red headed ******* step child that no one likes and loves to f^ck with.

Anybody who thinks that there aren't different rules for certain schools while UM is taken to the exact letter and direction of the law has their head buried in the sand.

I think as UM fans we need to stop pretending that our program wasn't dirty. Now granted what we are accused of happens at every school. We got caught. Time to accept whatever the NCAA throws our way and move on. We have players admitting that Shapiro was truthful in some aspects of his hit piece.

Here is how the scorecard looks to me.

On the positive side- Shannon tried to steer the kids away and warned coaches about Shapiro. Shalala is well liked and respected amongst NCAA presidents. The coaches that were implicated were let go. The current group of kids that were involved have served punishment and most have left the team.

The negative- the damages are deep and wide ranging. We have a probationary past. The scandal involved the 3 main athletic programs (FB,BB,Baseball). Some kids have gone on record to confirm some of Shapiro's claims. The pressure from outside the NCAA(ie media, fans) to hammer UM is loud and vocal. The unpredictability of the NCAA to be fair and evenhanded. Their desire to really lay the wood to set the tone for this kind of behaviour is palpable.

also dont forget that much of this happened on slims dees watch

and then he moved on and was responsible for what happened to usc.......i still say that usc is the starting line for whatever we get

I'm sure that he didn't tell reporters anything that he didn't tell the NCAA when he was interviewed and got a 6 game suspension.

no news here

This was said publicly months ago by his father. You must not have been paying attention.

Vernon's comments are why we will get hammered. We are NOT going to "skate" as so many like to emphatically write on these boards. It is going to be bad and it is going to hurt. Coaches directing players to a corrupt booster. Coaches arranging travel for parents. This is the definition of "lack of institutional control". I just wish they would rule so we can absorb the pain and the healing can begin.

I sure hope Hurtt, Hill and Pannunzio are severely punished too.

This is all on Shannon and his benefactor, Shalala.

No, it's not. Lack of institutional control generally involves higher ranking school employees (compliance people, or a head coach, for instance) being aware of a problem and doing nothing about it, not having the proper steps in place to monitor these things, etc. Low ranking employees, like assistant coaches, acting on their own isn't really what LOIC is for.

This makes me wonder. What did Shannon actually DO about it? He apparently knew about it for years. Beyond verbally warning people, what did he do?
