Trying to be pragmatic, I looked at the Bills and Saints on defense in the NFL for a comparison. Why them? They have allowed the fewest points in the league on defense, so thought that was a decent proxy for benchmarking.

Last Buffalo game, which was competitive.
  • Both starting CB's played every snap, slot CB played all but three snaps
  • MLB/SLB played every snap
  • Their third LB played the three snaps that the slot CB didn't play, meaning they only played three LB's total
  • FS/SS both played every snap
  • They played four total DE's, each playing between 20-34 of the 53 snaps
  • They played three DT's total, each playing between 20-31 snaps

Last New Orleans game, which was competitive.
  • One CB played all 83 snaps, nickel played 77, one played 61, dime played 20 snaps
  • Two LB's played all 83 snaps, third LB played six snaps
  • Both safeties played every snap
  • One DE played 67 snaps, others played 31, 37 and 36 snaps
  • DT's played 45, 34, 31 snaps
There were 75 defensive snaps in our UNC game.
  • Amari Carter led us in snaps at 61
  • Bubba Bolden played 60 snaps
  • Flagg played 57 snaps
  • Tyrique played 56 snaps
  • Steed played 48 snaps
  • Couch played 48 snaps
  • Two highest graded players by PFF played 27 snaps (Harvey) and Leonard Taylor played 20 snaps
It's another of the baffling things that our coaches do. Play your best players and play them a ton. To get on the field is a privilege, not a right because you were recruited or because you are an upperclassmen.

James Williams needs to play every snap. Kam Kinchens needs to play every snap. Taylor needs to play as much as he can. Tyrique needs to play every snap. Harvey needs to play more. Keontra needs to play every snap.

Quit making it harder than it is to win games.
From the get go, I've always appreciated the work you put into this Lance. If nothing else, I've learned a helluva lot about the X's and O's and it helps better understand what I'm seeing regardless if it's a Canes game or another. Hope you don't get discouraged and stop doing these.

The game was an abomination but I liked what I saw of Keontra.

He looks and runs how a UM linebacker should.

Would you agree?

Harley falls down catching the ball so often.

This is maddening, he does it every game, I think he's afraid of taking a lick.

Always appreciate these, but can we get some of the offensive plays that worked in the second half. I also believe the o-line performed better than it has all season and would like to see some examples if they are there. I now we are all frustrated t for what this season has become but as we take the bad with the good it would be nice to see where some guys are improving or making plays that stand out. Thanks again for spending your time on these I always enjoy reading.
I did show several I felt like. The TD to Knighton was a huge play. Some of the runs.

If there is more positive to show next game, I'll be sure to spend more time on them.

Appreciate you saying this. I spend a lot of time on these (my choice, not looking for sympathy), and I’m not sure if the group honestly wants these any more.

The program has definitely reached a low spot.
We still enjoy them, even if it is painful to write.

I’ve been preaching this too. Rotate the dl to keep them fresh but the back end needs to be the same top performing guys. If someone gets upset they are not getting burn well then practice better.

Thank you for taking the time to do these

When Chad Johnson played for the Dolphins (well, he tried to) and that was the season they were on Hard Knocks. The WR coach at the time and the OC noticed he would always catch the ball falling down. It became a habit. The WR Coach said that when a WR starts doing that, it means they have lost all confidence in their hands.

Harley is at a point to where I think he just wants to try and salvage his NFL career aspirations and not drop anything. That and the fact that he knows this fanbase is merciless when it comes to drops. (I.E., Mallory, Pope and Wiggins) So I dont know if that is a good thing that he is at least catching the ball again or a bad thing that he has probably lost some confidence and he will rather catch it and fall down then not catch it at all but limit YAC.

@Lance Roffers
have you ever tried reviewing another teams film in the same depth to compare the breakdowns? I know we are badly coached but I am curious how big the gap is vs a well coached team and what a fair expectation is.

Bad tackling, overall bad technique, making the same mistakes etc are not acceptable. But, if you were grading someone like Alabama would you still be able to find examples of communication breakdowns, plays with someone badly out of postion, situations where the scheme just isn't going to work against a certain formation etc etc.

I guess the question is, whats a well coached team look like? Every game will have mistakes by both sides that anyone can point out if they look hard enough, is it the shear amount of mistakes we make, are our mistakes just more egregious than other teams, is our scheme vulnerable to certain things or does it have fundamental flaws that will never allow it to be successful against a good offense?

When we have a new coach next year and I watch these, I want to see where we went wrong but I also want to be able to look at it with reasonable objectivity.

Kudos @Lance Roffers

Your work is appreciated.

Looking at this comedy of errors; Don't see how they keep it close vs NCSU?

What say you Lance? Have you seen film (or a game) of NCSU this season?

I did one of the FSU/Miami game from years past last season I think, but doing one of Alabama might be interesting.

To answer some questions: All teams make mistakes, Miami just makes more of them and has scheme limitations.

Lance doesn’t need to watch another team. He sees the other team during our breakdowns and their execution and coaching sticks out like a sore thumb

@Lance Roffers was there one play at any point that was so bad that you told yourself, "I am this close to not doing this anymore?"

Some are born to do certain thngs. I think Lance was born to break down games on film and would find it difficult for any reason to stop doing what he loves to do

It's hard to stomach these sometimes but I appreciate the work!

SMH. Was looking forward to this one but dont blame you for cutting this embarassment short.

Someone on here said that Flagg was looking to hit the transfer portal and GoGeta replied with, "To what school????" Lol. Sounds about right. At this point, when we get a new HC, I wouldnt be shocked if they pulled a Mel Tucker at MSU and completely revamped this roster from top to bottom. Just tell certain guys that they arent apart of the long term plan and maybe its time for them to hit the portal to a lower level school. Flagg would be on that list and I have been his biggest defender but its time for him to move on and for us to see what someone else can do. Enough is enough.

Bubba Bolden (who I have also defended and had high expectations for) is one more loss away from getting the GHall treatment and losing his job. At which time I expect him to opt out and get ready for the draft and try to salvage his career in football. I just dont see any point in playing certain guys anymore if we are out of bowl contention and Manny is fired. Bolden is on that list along with guys like Mallory, Ivey, and McCloud. GHall should just hit the transfer portal now if hes smart.

Not sure what happened to this once proud defense but we have turned back the clock to the Dno days of just horrible defense. There was a time that this defense could be depended on to carry this team but not anymore. Lashlee is going to have to put forth his best effort to showcase whatever talent he has left for his next possible destination as a low level OC or maybe an upper level QB coach the rest of this season because this defense could give up 30+ the rest of the way..
Agree on Flagg big disappointment, and Bolden since the Clemson game has been a disappointment : never seen players actually get worst the more they play.

We want them. The macro problems are just depressing the enthusiasm temporarily.

I hate seeing situations like Hodges falling down on a wide open route or TVD having field vision problems. But those are mistakes that you can mitigate through better recruiting and development. They're not signs the system is broken per se.

What's hard for me both during the live game and now in retrospect is how horrific we are at the fundamentals. Guys like McCloud and Hall and Donaldson who have been with the program for 4 years or more are still repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Or younger guys like Flagg and Steed who have had enough reps to know better but more often than not take the wrong angle and show terrible tackling technique. That's just a brutal indictment of the staph.

I'm with you. My take:
* Starters that need to lose their spots and see a dramatic reduction in snap counts -- McCloud, Hall, Donaldson, Bolden, Ivey, Gaynor
* Starters that need to split reps with younger players -- Steed, Ford, Frierson, Harley, Mallory
* Young guys that need to start or see a lot more action -- James and now Avantae Williams, Chantz, Arroyo, Chase Smith, Roberts, LT, Freshmen OL, Freshmen WRs, Thad
and any linebacker that hasn't seen the field, I would actually put Washington out there, every time I seen that kid he is hitting the crap out of somebody:

We actually must have some talent on this team, because any other team with this many screwups, would not even be this close to actually winning both games at the end.
