UM announces Bob Shoop as Defensive QC coach; Diaz comments

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes completed their defensive coaching staff by hiring Bob Shoop as Defensive Quality Control Coach, head coach Manny Diaz announced Monday.

Shoop, a 32-year college coaching veteran, is the former head coach at Columbia and has served as defensive coordinator at three Power 5 programs. He most recently coached safeties at Michigan.

“Bob is a two-time Broyles Award finalist who has coordinated the defense at multiple schools and also has experience as a head coach,” Diaz said. “We are excited to add someone with his level of expertise to our defensive staff.”

Shoop spent the 2020 season in Ann Arbor after two seasons as defensive coordinator at Mississippi State. He also served as the defensive coordinator at William & Mary (2007-10), Vanderbilt (2011-13), Penn State (2014-15) and Tennessee (2016-17).

In 2019, Mississippi State’s defense led the SEC with 14 fumble recoveries (fourth nationally) and picked off 10 passes to rank second in the conference in turnovers (24). In 2018, Shoop was a Broyles Award finalist and was named FootballScoop Defensive Coordinator of the Year as the Bulldogs were the only defense FBS to finish top-10 in all four major defensive categories (total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, and passing defense). MSU allowed only 12 touchdowns all season, the fewest allowed by any FBS team since 2011.

Shoop helped produce three 2019 first-round NFL Draft picks in Jeffrey Simmons (19th), Montez Sweat (26th) and Johnathan Abram (30th). Over his last 12 seasons, he has coached 20 NFL Draft picks with four at MSU, five at Tennessee, five at Penn State, three at Vanderbilt and three at William & Mary.

In 2014 at Penn State Shoop was named 247Sports' Defensive Coordinator of the Year. He was FootballScoop's FCS Defensive Coordinator of the Year and a Broyles Award finalist in 2009 while at William and Mary.

Shoop was the head coach at Columbia from 2003-05, posting a 7-23 record. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Yale, in 1989 as a graduate assistant. He also has spent time as an assistant coach at Massachusetts (2006), Boston College (1999-2002), Army (1998), Villanova (1997), Yale (1989, 1994-96), Northeastern (1991-93) and Virginia (1990).

Shoop played wide receiver at Yale where he earned his bachelor's degree in economics. He was recognized with Yale Football's prestigious Robert Gardner Anderson Memorial Award for team spirit, dedication and leadership. He also earned four letters in baseball.

Shoop was a three-sport standout at Riverview (PA) High School and is a member of the Allegheny-Kiski Valley Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Maura, have two sons, Tyler and Jay.

What all these looney Manure fluffers are doing is prancing around, taking jabs at the guys who were proven right, and making it seem like Manure engineered it when he **** sure didn’t. He kept him around, and he’d still be here right now if that drunken oaf, who is doing the same hire/fire scapegoat duck duck goose game Manure is, didn’t take him off his hands.

So just be happy like the rest of us are that we got lucky. But quit flitting around with Manure’s ball sweat on your chins trying to ascribe some Hulk smash alpha male high T manliness to Manure. In reality, he demoted Rump, the worst recruiter in UM history, to the recruiting department, kept drooling son Patke, kept booger eating son Blank, and his son, who actually had a valuable skill as a recruiter took a promotion to run his own D.

meh...I haven’t read anybody boasting about Manny’s T levels. Just a bunch of people happy that we have added some needed competent coaches/recruiters. I mean, we might have a literal handful, like 5 or 6 people that are all in on the Manny train, like Andrew, but most here range from totally disgusted to praying for a miracle.

Everyone knows Manny’s on the clock, just because people don’t constantly post about the possibility of impending doom doesn’t mean they don’t think it’s real.

Lol thank you... Listen I straight up want Manny to succeed because if he does that means things are going well and were winning. Im happy about the new staff additions.

It got Banda, Rumph and Baker off the field. I lov3 that Jess Simpson is back I felt when he was hear our Dline played better. TROB AND TWill will coach and recruit better for us as well. DVD is turning into a good recruiter and can have TROB as a mentor to learn the ropes.

Im cautiously optimistic to see what they can do... I think its ok for people to be excited considering what we've seen in the past.

I wasnt a mod then... never agreed with people doing those things. Ive always loved debating... do it at work a ton but just feel all the unnecessary stuff isnt needed. Just trying to keep the threads going without seeing them go off the rails like they do sometimes.

You don't have to change your style never said that. Youve always brought a unique perspective to things and Ive enjoyed that.

The true slurpers are few and far between. There aren’t as many as some portray. Most, including myself, are realistic about the state of the program and thus have realistic expectations.

Rants about the few who view Manny as the messiah are just that - rants to project one individual agenda.

I don't really care how it happened, just that it did. Whether Manny told certain people to start looking for new jobs or ceremoniously fired them makes no difference. The end result is the same. He gets credit for making the change because it happened, just the same way he gets the blame if it didn't.

I'm a fan of the Canes, not an individual coach or player. Sht on my team and you're dead to me.

Shoop, Robinson, Williams and Simpson provide some much needed testosterone to a staff that was known for coddling and playing favorites. Manual remaining in charge of that room is fine, I just hope he reconsiders and let's someone else call plays during the week and on game day.

Manure was going to be DC and Blank was his game planner and still a member of the staff. He didn’t fire him and had absolutely zero influence on Orgeron hiring him. Orgeron liked Blank last year and still liked him this year. And guess who else was going to have him on his staff in 2021 if Orgeron didn’t throw him a life preserver? Yep. The guy you guys are celebrating for a firing he didn’t have the stones to make.

So, yeah. Celebrate the good fortune. Celebrate Manure hiring a couple great assistants after Orgeron took his son Blank off his tiny hands. But don’t get so lost in the haze of guzzling Manure’s zesty bath water that you lose track of facts because then I’ll have to stomp back here like a truth cop to set the record straight and urinate on your smoldering fire of alternative facts.

Manure is still the same guy who called plays situationally in 2020 but somehow decided not to call plays when his team was being historically sodomized by old man Brown. Listening to the Manure Munchers, you’d think he called plays during all the good defensive efforts but ghosted us during the horrible ones.

Keep prancing and flitting around like fairies prematurely celebrating like we won a NC, but the jury is still out on Manure as a HC whether you like it or not. If all that mattered was the off-season he’d be a perennial NC.

And he got lucky as fck with Blank. Otherwise, it would have been the same two clowns running the D that got gutted by old man Brown. Perspective, ladies. I hope he proves us critics wrong, but he sure as **** hasn’t accomplished that yet

He also didn't get rid of Banda. Banda took a promotion elsewhere.

Rumph yeah he might've pushed off field but still didn't have the heart to outright let him go.

Is this new defensive staff a significant improvement over the last one? It absolutely is and that makes me happy. Does this make Diaz an elite HC? No it doesn't. Most definitely he does. I've been very critical of Diaz where it was deserved and I've praised the guy when I thought it was merited.

I still have a lot of questions when it comes to Diaz being able to be the man when it really matters. I still need him to prove to me that he can be the type of game day coach that he needs to be in order for UM to be considered truly back and to stay there and that's not because I'm a "mope" whatever the fack that means. I am rooting for the guy however. Not because I'm a "sunshine pumper" or whatever dopey label somebody comes up with. I'm rooting for Diaz to develop into the type of "CEO" that can oversee our return to dominance because I'm a Miami Hurricanes fan!

Now that Diaz has managed to put together what I honestly believe to be the best staff UM football has seen in I don't know how long, this program has most everything it needs to make the jump we all want to see. All we need now is for Diaz to take this excellent support structure that is now in place and do something with it.

This sums up my perspective perfectly. Well said.

Manny has lifted my spirits and elevated my expectations...again. I don't care if he backed into it or masterminded a complicated reengineering of the defense. He got it done so he deserves credit. He bought himself another year to disprove the narrative that he is not a good HC. However, we need to win next season. His future with the program is at stake and he is out of excuses. I'm rooting for him because I am a 'Canes fan but there exits some skepticism because of past performance. It's Manny's job to erase all doubt.

If you don’t care how it happened and weren’t peacocking around here like a fairy trying to turn the lucky break of Orgeron hiring Blank into some mastery by Manure, then my comments have nothing to do with you.

This mope **** has gotten out of control. You guys have taken my invention, the mope, and turned him into someone I never intended him to be when I coined the phrase. The mope is a guy who sees everything through the prism of his diarrhea stained eyes. He’s a loser and everything is terrible in his eyes. If you guys see righteous critics of Manure as mopes then you need a refresher course.

No one loves this program more than I do. I spent 7 years of my life at the Mecca that is UM. Ain’t none of these Johnny come lately coaches more UM than I am, especially an FSU guy.
