Dillard ATH Dennis Turner committed to Miami back in June after receiving an offer at an Al Golden football camp, but that was only the beginning to a busy summer.
“I’ve just been working out, getting bigger and stronger for the season and getting ready for college. I’ve been lifting weights and eating healthier to be better than I was last year,” said Turner.
The versatile athlete has gained some new attention over the past month, something he did not see coming.
“I didn’t expect it. It’s been a surprise, but I’ve just been keeping my composure and staying the same.”
Turner has been paying attention to Miami’s recruiting success and is excited to see it.
“It’s great because Miami is going back to the golden days, the championship days and looking for the sixth ring.”
The Dillard product hasn’t been doing too much recruiting for the ‘Canes, but he has a message for any prospects from the area who are considering Miami.
“South Florida has all the football talent that you can possibly need and the University of Miami is in your backyard, so why leave home?”
Turner would be the first Dillard prospect since 1997 (Leonard Myers) to sign with Miami, which was something he was stunned to hear.
“Wow, I didn’t know that. It’s crazy. That’s a very long time.”
The local product plans to watch the ‘Canes in action this season at every opportunity.
“They should have a great season and I’m really looking forward to when they play Florida. I’ll be at every home game.”
Despite his commitment to Miami, Turner has had to deal with whispers from ‘Canes fans doubting if he is “good enough” to play there.
“I’m not paying attention to any of those critics. I’m just going to go out there and do me and play football. The only person I need to prove myself to is me.”
Miami is recruiting Turner to play cornerback, which is a position he isn’t very familiar with. He also doesn’t mind playing on offense.
“I can play both sides. I haven’t played corner since little league so it might be a challenge, but I miss it.”
One of the reasons Turner committed to Miami on the spot was due to the connection he felt with Head Coach Al Golden.
“Coach Golden is my type of coach because he’s a player’s coach. He has a bright future ahead of him and he’s bringing in all these players from South Florida, and we haven’t seen so many players from here come in a long time so Miami has a bright future and I see us winning a lot of games.”
