The More You Know...About FAU

The off-season is almost over as the season opener against FAU draws closer. So join us as we "Salute the Hoot" by giving them a proper preview for our game this Friday night in this years 1st installment of The More You Know.

1. Where they finished in the standings/rankings:

Sun Belt ConferenceConferenceOverall

How bad is FAU? These guys were 1 win better than the last place team in the Sun Belt last year. That's rough. When you only win 2 conference games in that league, the word awful doesn't do justice to how bad you are.

Now they're in the newly re-re-re-aligned Conference USA which looks like this:

51.jpg

"I'm just glad that FIU moved with them so that they could keep that rivalry intact."

-Said no one

2. What happened the last time FAU played in a game?

From the Associated Press:

LAFAYETTE, La. -- Terrance Broadway posted 291 all-purpose yards and Alonzo Harris ran for three touchdowns to help Louisiana-Lafayette hold off Florida Atlantic 35-21 Saturday in the season finale for both clubs. Broadway threw for 168 yards and ran for 123 of Louisiana-Lafayette's 284 rushing yards as the Ragin' Cajuns (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt Conference) won their third-straight game. Louisiana-Lafayette broke open a 14-all tie with a 10-play drive, which was capped by Broadway's 15-yard touchdown pass to James Butler. The Ragin' Cajuns extended their lead to 28-14 in the third quarter behind a 2-yarder from Harris.

FAU (3-9, 2-6) closed the gap to 28-21 in the fourth quarter but Harris' second 2-yard score of the day sealed the win for Louisiana-Lafayette. Graham Wilbert completed 25 of 38 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns for FAU but also tossed two interceptions. William Dukes hauled in nine catches for 204 yards for FAU.

I don't have anything particularly insightful or clever to say about any of that. However, I would like to point out how astonished I was to learn that someone got paid to watch and give a recap of this game for the AP.

3. Who to be scared of:

483.jpg

Jaquez "Quez" Johnson

Last year I generally reserved this spot for the opposing team's QB. I had this whole section planned out to be about Melvin German III (relative of former Cane Jammi German) since he performed the best in their spring game. But then FAU went and moved German to wide receiver last week. This sucks because I had this whole bit planned out, basically warning people about the bum ESPNU announcers calling him something stupid like MGIII anytime he picked up a 1st down. Apparently they now have a 4-way battle still going on for the starting job. So who the **** knows what these jokes are planning on doing.

Anyways, the reason they moved German was because of dual-threat QB Quez Johnson. All the Starkville, MS native did at East Mississippi CC was score touchdowns. In fact, he scored multiple touchdowns in every game he played in. He led his team to an 8-0 start last year and in the process they outscored opponents 389-24. They lost their last two games by a combined two points. Last year he went 227 out of 383 (59%) for 2,846 yards and 27 TD's. He also amassed 540 yards rushing (2nd on team) on 121 carries (4.5 ypc) and another 12 touchdowns (led team). In his final game in the MACJC State Semifinals, he had 557 yards of offense, 455 in the air and 102 on the ground and scored four times. Here are some highlights of that season:

I haven't the slightest clue if he's any good or not, and for all I know he might not even end up being the starter. However, the last time we saw our defense in action it gave up 583 yards and 45 points to Duke. This defense is also solely responsible for letting people think Logan Thomas and Danny O'Brien have talent. So until we see our guys show that they're better, anything is possible.

4. Player that will score against us:

52.jpg

William Dukes

The best offensive player on FAU is Dukes, and he is a big target at 6-4 190lbs. Last year he was voted Offensive MVP by his teammates after he grabbed 63 receptions for 979 yards. He also set the school record for receiving yards in a single game with 204 (including a 75 yard TD) against Louisiana-Lafayette. He's been selected to the Biletnikoff watch list for this season after having been named 2nd team all Sun-Belt last year. Here are some highlights from last year:

The bottom line is he's a South Florida kid (Dillard) who's going to want to prove himself against the U. He'll be noticed throughout the game.

5. Person that will **** you off:

53.jpg

Bo Pelini's brother

Just look at this guy's face. He's obviously a ****. Carl might not be as established as his brother, but he sure makes up for it by being a weirdo. No clue whether he was joking or not, but he made some bizarre assertion that Golden might have had spies at FAU's spring game. He's also a sore loser. Here's him attacking a Texas aTm reporter after he lost some game.

It's just a game silly, no need to get jammed up and break some mouth breather's camera. For a good time, google the words, "Carl Pelini" and "donor's daughter".

6. Some other guy:

484.jpg

Cre'von LeBlanc

You may remember him from the 2012 recruiting class where he was a standout for Glades Central. There was rumored interest from our staff early on, but that never materialized into an offer for him. LeBlanc plays the nickel spot in FAU's secondary, and since he's a pretty good tackler they like to bring him up in the box sometimes to help out in run support. Here's a good read about him by Dieter Kurtenbach of the Sun-Sentinel where his coaches talk him up and say how they plan to utilize him. He saw lots of time last year as a true freshman, which included appearances on the road against the likes of Bama and UGA so he's faced elite talent before at the college level.

Here's some highlights of his freshman year:

Only thing left to say about him is that Muck kids are always tough, and he won't be intimidated by whoever they match him up with.

Cre'von LeBlanc looks like a good prospect from his highlight, too bad he will be going up against Morris & Duke. Miami 45-14.

I was hoping these segments would be back. Rep

Them dudes were 14-14 with gawga in the 2nd quarter. Don't trip. I think we win bug but we better not play like we did vs BCC and expect a W. I can already see AJ or Rodgers being abused by that wideout. I'm really excited to see our pass rush materialize and click this game.

Go CANES!

Solid work OP...I will always be grateful to EJ for not squeezing the life out of ya for the whole 'Dark *****' twitter thing

FAU has a starting DT that is listed at 6'2 225.....serious.

Need to hold them to under 10 points. Get this D started off on the right foot and build some confidence.
