They will land quality players in the portal. Some guys deserve some raises and will need them to stick around. But overall this signing class wasn’t overly expensive like last year.

TVD comes off the books and his deal should net you a good QB. Cohen comes off and should land a good starting DT. Deen comes off and can land another DT of his caliber. Taylor, Kam, and James Williams aren’t cheap. Lee has a nice NIL package.

Reallocating money will get you good players. But there’s key positions to replace. Potentially 3 top 3 round picks. Not a lot of room to whiff.

Possible, but we theoretically had plenty of money to reallocate in recruiting DT (after missing out on a bunch) and came up short. That could easily happen in the portal, especially with key positions like QB and WR.

Lee is going to be very, very, interesting. Miami needs to do what it can to keep him.
That is why I didn't automatically throw him into the money that can be reallocated.

I think he leaves and Rivers kicks inside to center. Still not a huge need to grab an OL in the portal if that happens but we could.

I see it like this just for a visual:
TVD's NIL - $ for $ to a new QB. Should have a high-choice option as long as Mario's reputation doesn't kill it. They have a plan in place and hopefully it works out
Cohen's NIL - $ for $ one of the top DTs in the portal. Should get an all-conference caliber guy
Deen's NIL - $ for $ should land a rotational DT
Taylor's NIL - $ for $ for a starting WR or CB
James' NIL - $ for $ for a starting Safety
Kam's NIL - $ for $ for a rotational Safety and a rotational DT
Lee - Stays or $ for $ goes towards a Nickel/CB. Maybe another portal OL

The rest opening up is pretty much pennies. Use that to go towards freshman, allocating to high performing young guys, etc.

I said the same but a scout for the Ravens told me it's due to a shortage of interior pass rushers. Super high demand.

He said the opposite about Kinchens. I see him in 1st round mocks everywhere and he's adamant that he shouldn't be in that conversation. Safety isn't crazy shorthanded in the league. They'd rather see that position unnoticed good or bad than to have their own 10 minute highlight tape of big plays, picks, and hits but have about 5 minutes of him on offensive player's highlights getting burned.
Teams at the back of the first will draft LT just on traits alone especially after he test well

Storyline I’ll be following is QB. Are we better off with TVD with another year under Dawson?

Or potentially showing him the door, getting Pratt…but what happens if TVD leaves and Pratt yields a bigger deal and goes somewhere else. FSU and UF could potentially be in the QB market too.

When TVD is healthy and right is Pratt really an upgrade? TVD hasn’t played in the same system yet in his college career. But obvious durability issues and mental challenges with him. Going to be interesting to see how Mario and Zo manage that room.

Zion to me is the biggest question mark, is he returning next year? Is he ever playing again?

A line of Samson, Zion, Rivers, Coop & Francis will be just as good as our OL this year imo. The LG spot will be interesting… ideally you just want your five best out there.

Thanks for the update D$, here’s to hoping the “best news we can’t talk about” is still a thing and not included in here on purpose

One of my concerns is whether in this age of NIL does it negate (partially) Mario’s strength (recruiter) at least for the highly rated recruits. Did Miami make a miscalculation in hiring a recruiter in this age of NIL where it appears bags are more important than anything else.
Yes sir. This is where I’m at and have discussed with some who also agree. IMO, if you have a somewhat personable HC who’s an average or average plus recruiter but a really good offensive x and o’s guy, at Miami, that’s what would have more success as opposed to a recruiting savant who’s a coRch on the field. NIL is a great equalizer to the recruiter. Unless you have aTm money or getting up there, you need to identify, develop and scheme.

I don’t think anyone would be happy finishing there considering the sheer size of the class right now. I get last year was technically a bump class, but you’d expect to build upon that with something in the 8-11 range. We’re holding on right now, but reading between the lines, a few of our guys are going to decommit. We just have to hope it’s not the blue-chips. We’ll probably have some drops too (much needed).

Would be a good sign because you only drop guys if you’re confident in grabbing someone else - either HS dudes or portal grabs. I am all for the portal strategy of grabbing proven college players, especially at DT, QB and DB (even if we allegedly seem satisfied with the current room). The only downside is added pressure, have to hit the evals out of the park.
We’re actually going to have to do what FSU has done in the portal at this point. I’m mostly bothered by the average ranking of our recruits as you’ve been pointing out. The whiffs are bad of course but what we’ve gotten, on average, does not bode well.

I really don’t get the OL whiffs more than anything.

Zion hasn't played in over 2 years. I think it's safe to say he won't ever play football here again.

I don't think there's any question mark with Zion…I think Zion is in the past personally, we've seen his last game (I honestly can't even remember it it was so long ago)

You know whats funny, USC is ranked 18th in recruiting right now and they too spent that money on a coach who is under performing

Miami and USC and actually very similar
USC won 11 games last year which makes it more tolerable to have a down year 2. we had 5 wins last year. we havent done what USC did last season in year 1 under riley in like 20 years

This especially when that group could be losing up to 3 starters.
