Spring Cleaning: Defense

so instead of the DL position taking a step back, it looks like the secondary will determine whether the defense takes a step back or go forward. We will just have to see, hopefully some of these guys know their weakness and work on them during the break.

Though Frierson is doing amazing at striker rn, I would have like the coaches to have moved him to Safety and move either Carter or D Smith to striker. I just think that would have made more sense; compared to Carter and D Smith, Frierson ability in space is a lot better than both of them and then you wouldn't have to worry as much about Carter's trouble in space.
I think thats a good thing. The d line sets the tone and needs to be the strength. They can make the dbs look god by making qbs rush. If your d line gets no pressure then the qb will find someone. No defense can cover a play forever.

If there’s one person coming in this summer that I’m sold on... it’s KEONTRA SMITH. He needs to see the field behind Bolden or Hall.
I think Smith needs some time to get better in coverage

I'm not concerned with the S position. Bolden, Hall, Carter and Smith is a very nice 2 deep. I know you all like to use him as a punchline but you could do a lot worse then a 5th yr senior with experience in Knowles as your 5th S. Keontra is gonna be a baller too.

This D is gonna eat this season.

The defensive line finally has quality depth for the first time in a decade. We've always had guys who can play there, even with D'Onofrio forcing them to play patty-cake. We just haven't had the level of depth where you could essentially play the entire second team D-line and not have much, if any drop off. Defensive end, in particular, is as good as it's been in a VERY long time.

We desperately can't afford to lose Shaq or Pink for any period of time. At least not early in the season.

Nah. Smith should be playing safety. His open field tackling is pretty **** good

thought I read somewhere that he was pushing 220 already. I love his physical makeup but ability to make open field tackles was not something that I believe he was known for. We'll see this summer/.

We are a twisted ankle from teams throwing for 400 yards on us every week.
Agreed. If we lose Bandy, those corners are shaky on paper. I have really high hopes for Williams and Couch but think we should bring in a serviceable grad transfer if they are out there.

From that analysis I see two primary concerns:

1. We have two starting DTs in Nesty and Ford, a "super sub" in Bethel, a fourth in Miller who may have a "bit role" and Martin behind him. Sounds like a 3 man rotation to me. That is not enough, even if all stay really healthy. The kid from UCLA better come in ready to play real minutes.
2. We knew we had questions at safety. I still don't see answers and expect us to sub a lot, based on what I currently see as a lack of complete and complimentary pairs. I see some potential physical forces, but not a lot of coverage skills or versatility.

Our DBs are versatile and we don't play against the 1993 Dallas Cowboys.

Frierson, D. Smith, Hall can kick down to CB in a pinch.

Chigozie will be ready. Could even push to start
