Portal every single year unless you've lucked into an Elite Dev Trait QB that just blows up your practices and is undeniable.

Some of yall really washed af and can not keep up with the times.

No Country For Old Men mentality.

We the Boss of the portal and about to be the boss of whole **** sport and a majority of you old men want to take us back to 2006.
Nobody on this site wants to go back to 2006

Its really quite simple. We'll stop being portal dependent when one of two things occur:

1. SOME ONE in the QB room gives us reason not to. Simple as that.

2. Or when the staff believes our playoff window has closed.

Its also nonsensical to see some of the think pieces and posts about this.

Go with the 5 star talent ready to showcase and lead the team or spend $7-10mil on a QB just cuz... hmmm, decisions, decisions.

If Miami believed in anyone in their existing QB room, we'd see that in their actions.

This.

Title is a little deceiving, the only question dealing with the topic was,

Question: Is it inevitable that you’ll eventually get a portal quarterback who doesn’t work out?

Shannon Dawson: Nothing’s 100 percent in life. I’m an old-school soul — I like developing kids, and reps in a system matter. At some point that’s going to mean more again.

Was hoping for more from Dawson on the subject of developing QBs. I would like to hear his thoughts on if a dedicated qb coaching working under him would be something he would welcome.

Question: What stood out most about Carson when you first evaluated him?

Shannon Dawson: He had played in a lot of big games. We felt like we were a really good team and we needed someone who had been there before. Experience was huge. Beyond that, I care most about accuracy from the pocket. If you can’t throw accurately from the pocket, I’m not that good of a coach. On film he was a progression quarterback — sitting in the pocket, finding lanes, triggering with accuracy. He was very cerebral. I also think he’s more athletic than people give him credit for, and we’ve encouraged him to use his legs more recently.

".......our pass game isn’t dictated by pre-snap looks — we’re progression-based. We ask our quarterback to see space and work through reads. "

-----------------------
IMO, these statements by Dawson tell you all you need to know about why certain popular QBs have not been of interest to him.....

I agree 1000% and I have no regrets and are glad we are willing to spend.

Just saying the reason there isn't someone in this room is because we didn't recruit or develop or recruit someone who can be developed. Which again I think is also important, but if you keep batting 1.000 in the portal then yeah it obviously isn't, I'm just going by the man's quote of what something he kinda preferred.

To be fair.... Their are very few teams that have identified, developed and kept a great QB. Texas? Maybe.

I don’t.

I think he meant the rules may make it harder for players to move once they have holistic reform.

Until then, portal every year.
The rule changes will affect it but IMO the price tag for QBs will be a bigger problem. In 5 years the price has gone from 1MM to 6.5MM (10MM if reported buyout is true). That model is not sustainable. Look at the NFL with 50, 60, 70/per year QBs. Restructuring contracts. Cutting them. Taking cap hits for 2 years to not pay 5 years.
So... Getting 1 of those QBs is for the now only (including 2026). Starting in 2027, if you really are getting "that dude" from High School and developing them properly, they should be taking over in year 2 (Coleman) or year 3 (Luke).
If you don't, 2027 season might be 8MM
2028 season might be 10MM.
That won't allow for proper roster building. You end up top heavy and not deep enough at most positions.
Especially how Cristobal like to be 2 deep and even 3 deep at some positions.

I think the best you can do is make your program one that elite quarterbacks want to come to - whether that be the blue chips out of high school or the elite portal pickups. You want them to want to come here not just because you dropped the most bags at their doorstep but because this is where they have the chance to shine the brightest.

Question: Their “illusion” defense can look different pre-snap than post-snap — how do you prepare for that?

Shannon Dawson: They force you to play quarterback after the snap. We’re built for that because we’re a reactive, progression-based offense. Nothing is predetermined for us. Our quarterback is trained to read space post-snap. Their coverages are elite — subtle changes, great eye discipline, and they occupy space extremely well. In a way, they play coverage like an option defense — you don’t see it often, so it feels different.

Question: How would you describe Indiana’s defensive identity?

Shannon Dawson: Very hard to run on, extremely gap-sound, and they strain better than almost anyone. Their zone coverage is elite — mostly zone, mixed in smart ways. They don’t get predictable; it’s like they pull coverages out of a hat. Their eyes are always on the quarterback, they get their hands on the ball, and they tip a lot of passes. It’s a very savvy unit.

Question: How does practicing against your own defense help you prepare for Indiana?

Shannon Dawson: Our defenses are similar philosophically, so those weekly reps help. More importantly, our pass game isn’t dictated by pre-snap looks — we’re progression-based. We ask our quarterback to see space and work through reads. I feel like we’re equipped, but not many teams have had success against them, so we’ll see how it goes.
As long as dawson is here(or any oc tbh) we should stop focusing on qbs who’s strength is they can run. QBs win games from the pocket and dawson prioritizes that

Not a crazy in depth breakdown from dawson but i got alot from his answers about their defense. I didn’t hear the audio but he seems very aware of the challenges Indiana present, almost like he spent alot of time just studying them and their tendencies opposed to seeing a team have a successful gameplan that you can copy build your gameplan off of

His answers kind of read like he’s prepared to rely on the pass game if the run game isn’t there. Almost like he respects their run defense more than their pass defense

This is a game seems similar to the osu game to where we don’t need carson to light them up for 300 but we need him to diagnose well pre and post snap to get us in the right play and just as important get the ball out on time

OSU play more of sit back defense, dont pressure much. And they have bigger ends who are more power rusher guys which we handle well. IU is very different and it will be a challenge for them and us, very interested to see how we match up with their simulated pressures, stunt and loops and what they do to combat our size and down hill attack. Their DC sound very confident borderline ****y to me but if he is on twitter tweeting people I shouldnt be surprised.
I wished they asked dawson or mario/mirabal and how you prepare for a team that sends so much sim pressures and stunts this much. I expect we see alot of max protection

Yea thats usually our answer, but that actually might work against you also.. You end up with3 man routes covered by 7 guys, your qb standing there patting the ball and if you have 3 guys blocking one the pressure still gets home. Its tough overall

Even tho this is corny asf like rvaCane, lol, y'all already know what this means:

I think you see if keeping one more RB in the backfield can handle the extra pressure before you start messing with things up front.

What are you talking about 2006?

Better yet, we need to think about 1982.
