Richt has faith in staff, will remain play-caller, as team preps for GT

In the midst of a three game losing streak, Mark Richt brushed off questions about the status of his staff members after Tuesday’s practice.

“First of all, I don’t make decisions like that midseason,” Richt said. “I can answer that I have a lot of faith in this staff.”

With the offense struggling immensely and unable to top 14 points in the past 3 games, Richt says he hasn’t even considered giving up play-calling duties to someone else on the staff.

“Right now, I have not even thought about that,” Richt said.

Miami is well-behind the Coastal Division lead, and while not mathematically eliminated, are a longshot to repeat as division champs. Despite this, Richt feels confident his roster has the potential to win an ACC title in the coming years.

“We want to be the team that has the type of roster that can be a dominating football team,” Richt said. “We’re building that, but we’re not there yet.”

The Canes starting QB has yet to be determined, and both saw time last week against Duke. Will Richt play both against Georgia Tech this week as well?

“I haven’t figured that part out yet,” Richt said. “It would be tough to start rocking and rolling guys in there (due to GT’s offense), we’ll probably have to stick with whoever is the starter."

RB Travis Homer missed today's practice, working off to the side on the excercise bike, but Richt is not concrned about his availability for GT.

“He strained his calf muscle, think he’ll be fine,” Richt said.

With the early signing period approaching next month, Miami has hit a wall recruiting, seeing multiple 2019 commits leave the class in recent days.

“Guys have de-committed, a couple, and it’s not all that uncommon,” Richt said. “If you look around the country, there’s people committing, de-committing all that kind of thing. Certainly, when you’re struggling, and people have some fuel to pour on what they consider a fire, they can get into kids’ heads. We have to do a good job of just staying in contact with them and letting them know everything’s going to be okay. That’s certainly something that has to be managed and we’re staying on top of it.”

The Canes have reached out to Clemson transfer QB Kelly Bryant and have started making contact with some class of 2019 QB’s as well. Will Miami take a QB in this class?

“Well we’re always on the lookout,” Richt said. “I do think the young quarterbacks (we have) are talented. I do think they’ve got the skillset to get the job done. I think they’re learning as they go, whether it’s through N’Kosi [Perry] getting some game reps or guys still just getting practice reps. I do believe these guys have the ability to get it done. We’re always open-minded about finding ways to get us better at that QB position and really every position across the board.”

Richt is pretty familiar with Miami’s next opponent, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets – he faced off against them every season during his tenure at UGA as an in-state rival. The Miami head coach is 15-2 overall in his career against GT, including 2-0 since coming to Coral Gables.

“I know what it’s like to play in their stadium - been there a bunch over the years in my career,” Richt said. “I know their fans will do a good job. I think they’ve got their ‘white out,’ which is kind of a big thing for them. As we know, everybody in America knows, it’s tougher to win on the road than it is at home. We’re going to be at their house, so it’ll be a great challenge for us. A lot of things will be a challenge for us, the way they play offense, as far as how important every drive will be on our offense. It’s going to be a very important game for us. With that, I’ll open it up.”

The Canes will have to make their offensive possessions count on Saturday, because the Yellow Jackets love to control the ball with their triple-option rushing attack.

“Playing against them… it is tough on an offense to be sitting there waiting, waiting, waiting for an opportunity,” Richt said. “But our defense has played well against them in the past and I have a lot of faith and confidence in this week. Bottom line is, the best way to beat them is somehow get turnovers or get them behind the sticks a little bit - whether it’s through a penalty or whether it’s through a negative yardage play, which is hard to do, because most everything is downhill coming at you.

“Paul [Johnson] is very patient. He doesn’t mind going for it on fourth down. He doesn’t mind getting two [yards], three, four and two yards on fourth down, getting a first down, and keep doing it. You always have to be ready for that shot. You never know when they’re going to take that deep ball. Just like last week, it went 86-yard touchdown on the first pass of the game, and I don’t even know if they threw any more passes - I didn’t watch every minute of it, but they don’t throw it very often. But when they do, it’s usually some type of a deep shot. You have to be ready for that, too.”

Richt announced the captains for this week as well: Travis Homer, Michael Jackson, Gerald Willis, and Mike Smith.

I would ask about his Son every fricking day. Nepotism Nepotism Nepotism. What does Jon do? How much dos he get paid? Why did you hire your own Son?

“We want to be the team that has the type of roster that can be a dominating football team,” Richt said. “We’re building that, but we’re not there yet.”

This is Richt's fundamental problem summed up in two sentences. Guess what? Every coach wants a dominant group of players, but you still have to coach. Yeah, you need the Billie's and the Joe's. No doubt about it. But when all of the teams in the Top 10 have elite Billie's and Joe's, guess what's going to separate the champion from the pack -- elite coaching: the team that plays mistake free; the team that executes flawlessly; the team that has offensive and defensive schemes that cause nightmares for opposing teams.

X's and O's matter, coach. They matter a &hit ton. Saban has not won all of those titles on talent alone. He and his staff run some impressive schemes, and the evil ******* is rarely outcoached. Can't say the same about Richt, which is why he has always lost to chump teams that he never should have lost to.

Schemes and play-calling, coach. It matters. Hire a mastermind OC and give him free reign to assemble a staff and call plays, and watch what happens.

Richt sounds worse and worse when he talks.

“We want to be the team that has the type of roster that can be a dominating football team,” Richt said. “We’re building that, but we’re not there yet.”
Yea... good luck building that. This class before the losing streak was underwhelming now it might not be in the top 25. I fully expect guys like Brownlee and Egaukun to decommit. I wouldn't be surprised if Tarquin and that kid from NY decommits if someone like Syracuse comes calling.

Oh, and I also fully expect some guys who aren't NFL ready to continue the tradition like always. I think Pinck and Shaq end up like the Norton/McIntosh situation. I wouldn't be shocked if Joe Jackson leaves. That defense is going to regress BIG TIME. Willis, MikeJack, Jaquan, Redwine, etc.

I also get this feeling some guys are going to transfer Jeff Thomas being one.

Like I said in a thread I made, we need to go 7-5, which isn't even looking realistic right now. Richt isn't that good of a coach so things need to be spelled out for him, we're in a mediocre bowl game (if we play one at all) because YOU AND YOUR OFFENSE. Hire a OC. Hire a new OL Coach. Hire a new QB coach. If our Offense, QBs, and OL were performing how they were performing now at ANY OTHER program all 3 (OC, QB, OL) would be fired.

Let me be the first to warn y'all, if Kelly Bryant comes here expect A) some transfers after fall camp and B) For Bryant to get the Rosier treatment and play because he is "mature." During this entire season has Richt shown you he knows how to handle a QB competition? ........ Exactly.

Jeff Thomas isn't transferring. He's got 1 more year and than he's eligible for the NFL draft. If he transfers, he has to sit out next season as he's not a grad transfer.

I mean yeah it sucks but he’s surrounded by guys that have no business calling plays either. And it’s wouldnt change anything anyway.

Rich must have found Gorldens binder behind a book shelf when he moved into the HC office.

I bet it was Lou Saban's playbook.

This guy I seriously think - dead serious - has early stage Alzheimers.

I think he keeps hearing the words, "dive play, dive play, dive play, dive play" 24/7.

The comment about building the roster, but not being there yet, is another shot at the current players from Mr. Nice Guy.

Not trying to defend this **** show, but, if not dementia, did he have a mild heat stroke we're unaware of?
I want to believe something has happened (which would validate this nonsense), I don't want to believe this is an orchestrated attempt to get himself fired. He has invested his own money, and countless hours in the community, trying to repair the bond 'tween this team, and it's neighboring communities, and counties. There's no way (at this juncture), I'm buying that this is his intent.

Whatever the issues may be, I dont think this "we're just not there yet" is one of them,.... Unless he was talking about his offensive coaching staff.

You've ever been at a point where you are crying from so much bad happening to you that you eventually start laughing when **** keeps happening to you. I feel like this is how this program is currently in.

In the ongoing covert operation that is UM football, it's nice of him to keep covering for Thomas Brown...

We need Richt to have his worst 3 games to finish out. Any wins, and the Richt Suckers will hype his "turnaround"

This guy is a low energy, small ****, excuse making, pathetic excuse for a coach

Jon Richt an his wife are like Big Papa Richt got this, I am going to the bank to cash my Christmas bonus.

At first I thought CMR was talking about the playbook.

Then I realized he was talking about taking questions.

"A lot of things will be a challenge for us, the way they play offense, as far as how important every drive will be on our offense. It’s going to be a very important game for us. With that, I’ll open it up.”

Give the man credit, he banks more shots than Fast Eddie Felson. At least he isn’t talking about the “cloud”. This is the new standard at Miami?

To your point and in my twisted, hopeful mind there is a small part of me that thinks/hopes Richt is trying to prove a point to the AD and BOT that they need to open up the wallet so he can hire a good OC and a better staff. Show them just how completely inadequate his staff is at present so they can say to him, 'Go hire whoever you need Richt to turn this thing around!'

Either that or dementia as you have suggested because it just does not make sense at all.

Yep and his aspirational goal of just out-athleting everyone - hat on hat, my guy beating your guy, etc. Game has passed him by.

Richt sounds worse and worse when he talks.

“We want to be the team that has the type of roster that can be a dominating football team,” Richt said. “We’re building that, but we’re not there yet.”,

This quote is straight trash. Richt is almost done with year 3 as the head coach, and this is the best he can give us? Please don't tell me he expects us to eat this garbage.

Richt was left with some decent talent. Here are his recruiting classes

2016 23rd
2017 11th
2018 6th

Again, his comment is garbage and is full of Complacency.
