Quentin Williams achieves family dream with Miami commitment

Stefan Adams
In the days following their biggest recruiting event of the year, the Miami Hurricanes have reeled in multiple commitments. Although one of their most recent commitments, 2020 Mallard Creek (NC) 3-star DE Quentin Williams, did not attend Paradise Camp, the groundwork had long been laid with the pass rusher and he saw no reason to wait any longer.

“It felt right, like it was time,” Williams said of his commitment. “The coaches were excited, coach (Jon) Patke said ‘Let’s go! Welcome to the family!’ That felt incredible.”

Williams’ father is a long-time Hurricanes fan from North Carolina. Mr. Williams joined his son on his first Miami visit back in April, and Quentin felt his father enjoyed the trip even more than him. When it came time to make his UM commitment last week, Quentin says it was an emotional moment for the family.

“I was trying to wait until my dad's birthday, but he knew what I wanted to do and told me to go ahead,” Williams said of his father. “I think he already knew, but he didn't want to ruin my moment, so he never said he knew. But when I made it public, he shed a tear.”

Williams is the first player Miami has pulled from the Tar Heel State since Braxton Berrios in 2014. He chose UM over a top group that also included West Virginia, UNC, Louisville, and Virginia Tech.

“I was born a Miami fan. That's my dream school,” Williams said. “The family vibe, the legends that played there all come back and mentor the young guys. It's football on the highest level. I may take some officials, but I'm 100% Cane.”

At the Opening Charlotte Regional in April, Williams put on a show in the combine testing, recording a 111.03 SPARQ score, a 4.80 40-yard dash, a 4.41 shuttle time, a 43 ft. powerball, and a 33.4 inch vertical. This puts him in elite territory in terms of athleticism among defensive ends in his class and will certainly play in an attacking defense such as Manny Diaz’s system at Miami.

“I think I'm pretty versatile,” Williams said. “I can move around and get in the backfield.”

Right now, the Hurricanes are working with a top 10 2020 class regardless of which recruiting service you prefer, and Category20 is growing by the day.

“The class is looking real solid. I just saw (Michael) Redding committed,” Williams said. “I'll meet more people when I come down end of July.”

His dad is a REAL Canes fan.

I hate to even bring it up, but the contrast between his recruitment & Donell's is glaring, it shows who really loves The U & who just says it as lip service while desperately chasing bags.

As I said in that Harris thread, the kids who wanna be here somehow "magically" end up here, there's not a million excuses or a bunch of stipulations with a list of demands.

Anyway didn't mean to derail anything by mentioning it, just sticks out how much a kid like this truly values & appreciates our program & wants to help us win, no doubt in my mind he's going to be successful here just based on how he was raised & his mentality.

Plus his skill set fits perfect with how we'll use him, he'll thrive in our system.

Will he be a SDE or WDE for us? Or will he be able to do both

I think he'll play Weak side right away, but can also play Strong Side if he bulks up & adds more weight.

It also depends on how the staff sees Elijah Roberts at the next level, because Roberts can play SDE or DT.

But Williams can play either side at the next level.

The U is Universal..............not only Florida guys wish to go with our Canes. Kids from all over.....
The prima donas who want us to coddle, and cozy up to them, may not appreciate the meaning of Cane, as this player from N.C does.

You know the NC crowd probably is cussing at him, but if he was born a Cane as he said, and his Dad is a Cane, then we welcome their family with open arms into our Cane fam...
Go Canes

I'm slowly turning my 14 year old son into a Cane fan in Oklahoma. If we were ever fortunate enough for him to actually commit to Miami I can't imagine how I would react. I'm sure there would be tears. Welcome to the U kid.

With the locals in SoFla (for most NOT all), it's definitely the ppl behind the scenes playing a role, then these folks find ways to get to the parents and before we know it, they are GONE...

Bagman--"Man why go to Miami, when you can go to Bama, Clemson or others and WIN championships and get all these things along with it"
Parents-- "So you'll will give us all this just for him to go to this school"
Bagman-- "Yep, Is Miami offering all that?"

And that's how Miami gets kicked to the curve with these locals...

This is why it makes zero sense to focus only on South Florida kids. Miami's brand is national. You start with the Tri-County, work your way to Central and North FL and South Georgia, then go all out with national recruiting of ballers with elite measurables. If the locals like Harris and Anaele aren't truly committed, your not stuck in December and February holding your dyck in your hand.
