I honestly don't know, I am optimistic because in the last portion of this season he wasn't nearly as reliant on the I-formation sets as he was before. What was befuddling to me ( and Peter and I discussed this on the podcast) is that Richt ran a wide-open, shotgun spread, quick tempo offense with rather immobile QB's years ago and then suddenly was acting like Woody Hayes. It was baffling to me

It was head scratcher to me as well.

As you said, the improvement in the last part of the season at least gives some cause for optimism.

Frustrating, though, considering what could have been.

As to why he went through that super-conservative "Woody Hayes" October spell, I have no idea. Small consolation, but after 5 years of coaches mindlessly sticking to a (defensive) approach that was never going to work, at least this guy changed it up (for the offense).

I'm hoping that if Kaaya stays, we see more of an approach better suited to his skill set, as well as one which minimizes his weak points.

K9,

Do you have to strap that thing to your leg when you run?

You should've led off the podcast with the sound of a giant gong

Steve could use his crank to bang the gong.

k9cane: Shout out to all my Canes fans that became organic from the soil of So. Cal. I see you bro.

Spot on, on your takes. Couldn't agree more and I appreciate the boxing analogies.

This is how I viewed the Richt hiring...either he becomes burnt out, or he winds up like JJ. Canes fans hated the hire of JJ...he didn't do "that" great in the old Big 8 w/ OK St, but he made them decent. I think some fans tend to forget than UGA was not some SEC power house team. Their last national title came in 1980 w/ Vince Dooley. Richt helped rebuild their image. With better recruiting grounds, I'm hopeful that he will get this turned around, but this recruiting class this year will tell me a lot. Good stuff.

K9 always bringing it. Great stuff.

Would love for K9 to write some articles for this website, maybe some articles for some of the big games. I loved his work at Canestime.

Rell, thanks, Im still optimistic about things, I just had some concerns about Richt and the mileage on the odometer and for much of the year the direction of the offense under his guidance. There's no doubt he'll reach a certain level at UM my question is can we Miami be consistently elite under his guidance.

This season they were 'thisclose' to really having a great initial campaign under Richt

Had a great time writing those pieces, it was fun getting to talk to the likes of Steve Walsh, Mel Bratton, Michael Irvin, Claude Jones, Bubba McDowell, Roland Smith and Kenny Calhoun and company

Good choice Pete! Definitely one of the best posters over the years here and on Grassy. He was always a big fan of "Botch " Davis.

Exactly. I call this the season of "what-ifs." What if Carter grabs that fumble on our 1 yard line against ND? What if that fg doesn't get blocked against FSU or that phantom hold doesn't get called eliminating Walton's go-ahead TD? What if the refs don't call that bogus TD against UNC? So many what if's that should have us optimistic, but at the same time, if we handle our business on offense like we had all year, those what if's become non-factors as well. Never been so frustrated and proud of these Canes at the same time. Frustrated b/c of the what if factor, but proud that they didn't fold like pass teams under both Shannon and Golden and have a real shot to go on a 5 game winning streak to close out the year. Thanks K9cane.
