PODCAST: The Start of a Streak ft. Lance Roffers and D$

I can't understand why Enos doesn't play our tall receivers in the redzone. He needs to get Malory, Hightower, Wiggins, and even NJoku involved. We have these tall guys with talent. Just throw some 50/50 balls and let them high point the ball. keep it simple. You have the horses. Let's go.

I don't like that strategy. Design good plays. There are dozens of clever teams out there. You don't actually need to design anything. Just steal concepts. The best coaches unabashedly steal all the time, while adding wrinkles of their own.

The 50/50 plays are like a concession you can't think of anything else. Besides, they are hardly 50/50 when actually charted nationwide. It is a misconception. Teams that resort to screens and fades are essentially screaming they can't think of anything else.

One thing I hate about the jump ball plays is that there is no offshoot to them. They work or they don't. Everybody stands around and watches. There is nothing you can fall back on later, like showing the same look but doing something else...something clever.

The 4th quarter last week had potential because not only were those plays fast and decisive but any number of permutations could evolve from those looks. Show the quick out several times then take it downfield. The other receiver on that side feigns a block then darts down the sideline. Saban was burned by that multiple times to the point it drove him nuts. Then he stole it for Alabama.

That's merely one example. Instead of slow delayed worthless play fakes do an immediate fake toss and then pivot the other way for a dart route or a combination. This offense has enormous potential given the great variety of snaps from under center and also shotgun.

Perry is not as accurate as Williams but he doesn't need to be as accurate on the middling balls. Just hit one or two of the dagger throws and all the 10 yard inaccuracies are not as concerning. Perry has missed the deep balls but at least they have missed long. That is fixable and lethal. When you miss hanging and short like Jacory and Williams the coordinator and defensive backs are mostly waiting and salivating. High yards per attempt does not source from a steady stream of 10 yard passes. It sources from normalcy mixed with the occasional dagger.

They're not really 50/50 balls when you have 6'3 - 6'6 receivers. Of course you run route concepts, but the point is we don't need to try to "trick" the defense to score.

I hope we obliterate GT. But even if we do, it won't tell us how much we've progressed or how good/bad Perry is as a QB. Need to wait until Pitt and FSU to see whether our team has taken the next step.

Harris might have been guilty of too much hangtime underneath his long ball but I def wouldn’t say he under three anybody. Travis Benjamin comes to mind when you think of Jacory throwing long bombs for house calls.

Good podcast. Lance provided good analysis especially regarding the OL and the inexplicable usage of Mallory. The absence of 3x1 isos for him is one of the biggest indictments on Enos so far. In the red zone it's the equivalent of eschewing apples in reach to go digging for root vegetables.
