I’m not saying Free R. Kelly. He did the crime and needs to do the time. All I’m saying is they should put a keyboard in his cell.

Best musician of my lifetime. If he ever did one of those Instagram Versuz battles, it would be like the ‘01 Canes against Washington.
Such an underrated post. Kelly’s the best R&B artist of my lifetime. Hit after hit after hit.

I‘s keep fawgetin’ you‘s a yungin’. Son, git ova here and sitcho *** down; let Unka Tet skool ya rite. Runnin’ yo mouf ‘bout sum “AR-RUH Kelly da bes musician of all time“. Who da **** you is, Kunta Kanye running on stage to **** up da skinny gurl speech? (Ode to the black barber characters of ****nio Hall and Cedric the Entertainer)

Really though…it’s Prince and it’s really not close. More albums sold, more Grammy awards nominated for, more artists influenced…the list goes on. Plus, Prince, who is in the R&B HOF, as well as the R&R HOF might easily challenge the notion of “the best musician of your lifetime” even if we were to exclude the catalogue of his first 5 albums (for you, prince, dirty mind, controversy, 1999, and Purple Rain) which were released before you were born (Around the world in a Day was likely released in your birth year).

Heresy for the Prince fans: Kelly might win a versuz battle (based on audience age, typically) — MIGHT. I don’t think so; don’t even think it’s close, but I’ll allow the possibility, but if the entire Prince catalog is included … the purple man wins in a romp.

And a lot of the people pointing a finger at Kelly don’t want to come to terms with Tupac… or the fact that “Pink Cashmere“ was written for a 16-year old girl. No her name wasn’t Aaliyah, but wouldn’t that’ve been a weird coincidence ( It’s a case of you never want to meet your heroes … so just listen for the art.

Kelly stays, imo. Good choice. (I was surprised no one mentioned Linda Rondstadt on the intro, though)

I'm a big Prince guy but like you said his best stuff was before my time.

Prince is the better musician in terms of instruments and is an equally great performer IMO. However, I lean to Kelly with the pen. Not only did he write all of his own hits in all those different genres, but he also wrote MJ's last #1 (You Are Not Alone), the Aaliyah hits and a huge hit for Celine Dion. Prince did some of that too (Manic Monday, Nothing Compares 2 U) but I think Kelly has him in terms of truly memorable hits. The man wrote a Reggaton song that went #1 in Puerto Rico (Burn It Up) and also had the best hip-hop verse of 2007 (Make it Rain Remix).

And I definitely agree with the last part. People don't want to admit anything about their favorite artists. All of the best rock musicians have the same skeletons.

Clearly I’m a fan of both and I’m familiar with all of his collabs etc…yet I lean the other way. He wrote Stevie Nicks “Stand Back”… (we could go on for hours…) and then influenced Sheila E, D’Angelo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who credit Prince directly for their music (The other Jackson, Alexander O’Neal, New Edition … and The Human League [from “don’t you want me“ to “human”].

Name all the songs that artists have remade by R. Kelly v Prince? Prince wins again. You might force me to listen to some R-uh later.

I won't pick sides on the musical talent. But Apollonia, Vanity and Susan Moonsie... Prince wins.
