Bandy can be the starter and still bump to nickel when they go to that package. I actually see that as likely. The questions becomes who is the 3rd CB that comes in and bumps Bandy inside for nickel packages.

Nah. Bandy can play outside and in. If bandy was 5'11 or 6'0 you wouldn't think nickel is his best spot. And dean has no veteran presence because he has barely played.
They are focused on grooming Gaynor as a center. That could change, but right now that's where he's at.

Gaynor isn't ready more than likely.
Staff already said thats what will happen if bandy starts. Said dean/frierson/ivey are competing for that 3rd corner.
Bandy has been very productive at the nickel spot, and Dean has played more than any freshman.

Dean aint that good. There is a reason he was commited to cincy coming out of high school.
TE discussion and OL discussion were the main takeaways.
Mallory playing the flex TE role and impressing with his athleticism and route running ability. Jordan has natural hands and aptitude for the position. Both guys are being groomed to make an early impact.
OL last year wasn't very strong or physical. Donaldson at RT could provide more of a road grading element on runs to his side. Reed impressed with his movement skills.
Both Malek Young & Bandy wound up starting towards the end of their Freshman seasons in critical games.
A lot of people forget, Malek Young got a huge INT for us in the End Zone vs NC St late in the 3rd quarter when NC St had driven all the way down into the red zone when the score was just 10-7. That completely shifted the momentum of the game & swung things back in our favor to let Walton take over & put it away.
Bandy as a TF had arguably one of the biggest plays in one of our biggest games last year with the pick 6 vs Notre Dame, which propelled us to being ranked the #2 team in the country after that victory.
Point is, Frierson, Ivey or Blades are better Corners with much higher upside than Dean & they need to play significant snaps this season. You don't get better sitting on the bench, throw them out there & see if they sink or swim.
True Freshman CB's play a lot of this level & succeed, it's not as difficult a transition as QB, they shouldn't just let Dean get spun around for half the season like they did with Delaney last year just because Dean technically has more experience.

Whats your take on Herbert right now? Is he in a similar position as Gaynor where he is being prepped and groomed for a position (LT) and as a result, not in the mix for one of the guard spots?
Are we basically going into the year with Jones/Mahoney with freshmen (given, they are stud freshmen) backing them up and the next man up in those scenarios?
From the whispers, here's probably what the coaches hope for in spring of 2019.

I'd love for Herbert to win RT and slip Donaldson back inside, but you get the idea. As D$ mentioned during the podcast, the hope is either Reed or Scaife win a G position at some point this season. We shall see.

From 2016 when this new staff came in, they have shown one thing : if you are ready to play and you warrant playing time - you're gonna get your chance.
And basically that's college football today in a nutshell in my view. Outside the interior line and maybe QB(in certain situations) I think mass redshirting is a thing of the past
Mallory has shown he can win one on one. The moment he gets a step on a defender, he's gone.
Richt isn't a guy who is out of touch. He understands the method of modern offense. He will force defensive coordinators to keep a private eye on Mallory wherever he lines up. They may want to double cover Mallory, but because of the speed on the outside, they can't go for that. No can do.
Better question for @DMoney. I haven't seen enough of him to personally say too much and guys around the program don't talk about him to me as much as they do about others. I think Donaldson at RT says more than we wanted to know, though. IMO, would have been optimal to have Herbert win the RT job and leave Donaldson at RG. We'd then have a glut of guys fighting for the LG spot, and a swing guy like Mahoney rotating as needed. Instead, we have a wild card unit. Style of play and specific play calls are likely to be affected.
Needs to do a better job in pass protection. He is athletic and quick, but a little bit of a leaner and needs consistency.
OL is a slow burn position. Sometimes the light goes on. Tyree St. Louis is an example of a guy who went from unplayable to reliable fairly quickly as a sophomore.
