Coming out of fall camp, true freshman defensive back J.J. Dunnigan was one of the most hyped up underclassman heading into the 2026-27 college football season. This past Friday, he had a chance to display his defensive ability by making his college debut against the Stanford Cardinal.
Dunnigan made sure he made the most out of his playing time, logging one tackle for loss in 33 snaps.
Head coach Mario Cristobal praised the 6-foot-3, and 205-pound defensive back during his weekly Monday press conference, stating he has the physical traits to be a solid contributor for the team this season.
"The guy we're depending upon. You guys saw J.J. Dunnigan in there. Obviously, a very physical presence. A guy that could play zone, man coverage, and stick his face in there in the run game and play in the box as well."
The defensive back group took a hit after veteran OJ Frederique sustained a shoulder injury during Friday's contest. Damari Brown replaced him on the field. However, going forward Dunnigan has a chance to show his versatility at the cornerback position.
Defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman raved about his skill set, believing he can have a shot at playing the cornerback position.
Dunnigan was one of several underclassmen who made their college debuts in the game. Coming out of high school, Dunnigan was rated as a four-star prospect, choosing UM over Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, and Nebraska, among others.
Fans are excited to see what Dunnigan can do on the field after seeing his solid performance against the Cardinal. The team will now head back home and play the FAMU Rattlers on Thursday night inside Hard Rock Stadium.
