that kid we got from tally in the 2008 class, im too lazy to google

This kid has such natural ball-skills and roaming ability. I have no idea why people would advocate for him to be a LB. Everyone wants the next ST26 but when a DB comes in with his measurables people start projecting him to LB.

This kid is a S all the way.

B/c of speed...that's why. Will he be fast enough to play the position as he grows? Its not like people are pulling this out of thin air.

Because of speed? How?

I think people are confusing his long strides for being slow. Kid has range and takes some pretty good angles. He can always get better but that can be said for anyone.

Recorded a 4.7 40 time. His speed in the highlights don't pop off to me either. I love the kid's instincts and physicality though.

As I understand it from a VT guy I know, Bud Foster was recruiting him there as a linebacker, ultimately. I trust that evaluation.

Hmm.. great points. We know bud runs that 4-2-5 and needs that guy quick enough to cover backs and TEs and tough enough to tackle.

It's May, and people are pulling this out of somewhere else. Do you know how big his father is? Mother? Can you project his physique? People do this all the time without a kid stepping on campus and very little insight. What about the possibility of him getting faster or having exceptional instincts to compensate for the 2/10s of a second in his 4.7 40 time that people are arguing about? Just let it play..

Armbrister plays lb in the nfl today so can add him to list.

How about we watch him play safety or at least get on campus before we make him a lb.

I don't get the obsession on here about moving everyone to different positions. I mean it does happen but not a lot , folks acts like 4-5 guys a class will be moving positions.

What in the **** are you talking about? We are talking about his measurables right now...and trying to project what he can do. That's what this entire thread is about. I don't give a **** about who is mother and father are. Wow.

I'm not a big fan of Smith to be honest... I remember being at his game and was like "who in the **** is playing safety"

Right.

His parents physiques can give you a good idea of how he'll continue to fill out. If you knew that (which some people do) then MAYBE you could make an educated projection about his future. Otherwise you're just exercising an extremely uninformed opinion with inconsistent logic.

Measurables? He's the same size as Amari Carter (6'2" ~200lb), who nobody wants to make a LB, but smaller than Sean Taylor or Cam Chancellor(~6'3" ~230lbs). He's a big kid that plays FS at a high level, and that's it for now. The rest is pure conjecture, which isn't worth discussing.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “Picking up the playbook will be the only thing to worry about even though I’ve already played in that type of defense in high school.
LOL. At least until he gets into camp. Then he will get big eyes and find out he's not the only stud in town.

If it weren't for conjecture this board wouldn't have much traffic.

I love all the interest our new recruits,..but...
Who cares if this guys 2 tenths slower in the 40,..or if this guy hits harder, long as they all can knock you into next weeks film session, I'm good with it! We act like our number 1's are all that matter!! We've been sorely missing elite talent for a while, and our #2 's..well..lets just say past cooching has sucked!
Titles, nor championships, get taken, without the #2 's being **** near, if not as good, as the #1s !! They are just as important to our teams production, our overall team health, and our teams continuity from year to year.
Altough its fun to split hairs over .10 sec on a 40 time, or..which guy we can mold to a diff pos group,.. Or who runs the cleanest routs, widest catch radius,.. And on n on..lets not lose sight of how much we truly need quality #2 guys, all the way across the board!! They could in fact be the difference tween us playing for an acc title, and us winning the damned thing!!
Made props to ALL the new DOGS joining the kennel!!

Nick Moody made it to the league as an LB...

He looks like a kid that has the frame to put on 20-30 lbs to me. Whether that forces him to LB or not, who knows, but he hits like a LB already.

Exactly...that's what makes his statements even more nonsensical.

For those that get a chance to see these kids live, how would you compare Smith and Carter? They're roughly the same size, 6'2' 200, big hitters, played some WR. What do you see in their games that makes so many people think Smith ends up at LB, but Carter will remain at S. The types of plays in their highlights seems to indicate the opposite, Smith's shows a lot of plays on the ball and range as a FS while Carter's seem to be closer to the line of scrimmage. I'm expecting Smith to be 2nd team behind Redwine and Carter 2nd team behind Johnson. But that's just my far from expert viewing of highlights.
Amari Carter is a better overall Safety, he's faster, a better tackler & more devastating hitter, he has better instincts & his best quality above all is his intelligence... He's got a high football IQ.

He diagnoses like a veteran even though he's still very young & a TF. People sleep on his instincts but he's pure hunter, he gets to the ball no matter what.

D Smith might have better Ball skills, but he's a step or two slower & isn't reading the field at the same level as Amari.

I like Derrick Smith a lot & think he'll be able to contribute on Special Teams from day 1, but Amari Carter is a future All-ACC team player (maybe 2nd or 3rd team, but he's a baller is the point).

Amari plays the game at an impactful level, he's a kid who as soon as he gets on the field he's immediately making plays.

Smith will be good but still needs some development, Amari is ready for starter snaps right now, that's the difference between the two.

I definitely do not think carter is faster than Derrick smith. Doesn't look like it on film
Smith ran a 4.7 & Amari is a 4.5-4.6 guy...

Obviously, you didn't see Amari play in the Spring game or have never seen him play live either.

4.7 is plenty fast for a true freshman entering college. You don't think he'll get faster?

Besides that, he's shown just as much ability to play single high as Carter has. And he's similar in physicality too. Y'all sleep on Smith. Only disadvantage he has right now is that he wasn't an EE. Don't know if he'll pick the mental part of the game up fast enough; but I think he can be every bit as good a player as Amari Carter.

Lol Reggie Bush says hello

Lol Reggie Bush was a KR in the pro bowl and Lito made it as CB and would've made two more he wasn't so injury prone.

Maybe you should do more research before opening your mouth. You seem to porst alot

Did not mean to downvote Z.

AK might have been talking about this play, but it was Sheldon Brown not Lito Sheppard who put the hurt on Reggie

My bad always get those two confused. Wasnt knocking Lito I was trying to say he is good. Good catch Mojo

When you mentioned Reggie i automatically went to youtube and assumed it was Lito who hit him until i found the clip haha.

Nasty hit haha
