University of Miami sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney was named The Associated Press national player of the week Monday for the second time this season following his record-setting performance against Pitt.

Toney caught a school-record 16 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns in the top-ranked Hurricanes’ 52-23 victory Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium. He surpassed his previous program record of 13 receptions, also set against Pitt last season.

The honor follows Toney’s Week One recognition, when he caught 12 passes for a school-record 234 yards and three touchdowns in Miami’s 45-6 victory at Stanford. Toney has topped 100 receiving yards in five of seven games this season.

Through seven games, Toney has totaled 66 receptions for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 136 receiving yards per game and 14.4 yards per catch. He has accounted for 44% of Miami’s touchdown receptions while helping the Hurricanes start 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play

Miami quarterback Darian Mensah received honorable mention from the AP after completing 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns against the Panthers.
