LB recruiting...again

LB is the least important position on defense.

We don't need 12 LBs for 3 positions.

Loading up on DT, DE, CB, and S is WAAY more important.

and just so yall see the breakdown again, something like this is what we want over a 4 yr span.

qb - 5
rb/fb - 6
wr - 12
te - 5
ot - 6
og/c - 8

de - 8
dt - 8
lb - 9
cb - 10
s - 6
k/p - 2

Man, I'm not seeing it. Here's what the depth chart looks like right now:

Starters -
Shaq Quarterman - stud
Michael Pinkeny - stud
Zach McCloud - average

Backups
Jennings - 3 star. Played limited snaps and looked like a 3 star.
Teraz McCray - JAG
Charles Perry - 3 star, JAG
Mike Smith - 3 star, average in space. Undersized DE playing LB with a history of injuries
Wayman Steed - 3 star, hasn't played football since puberty
Deandre Wilder - 4 star, flashed a bit. Good speed but underweight

Seems to me like we need to upgrade the talent at this position in a big way. And it's not like the D-line where you have the best position coach in America.... who the **** do we have coaching linebackers that is going to turn all these 3 stars in to studs?

This ain't Mississippi State... we need Miami caliber athletes at the LB position not a cupboard full of 3-stars and jags.

3 golden recruits. 2 good players, 1 average. The rest are jags or average. We need high end talent infusion and bad. LB recruiting has been just as bad if not worse then DL. Mannys LBs have regressed as well.

Tbh, for our tenth coach, Ill take a dedicated lb coach over an OC or ST coach right now.

Thank you for this response. Taking 3 lbs isnt oversigning. Its common sense. It should be your goal every cycle regardless of who you have or think youre getting.

You think Wilder, Steed, and Jennings are the goods? Awesome! Now go recruit somebody who can potentially be better. Never get comfortable, even of you have a stable of 5 Stars.

You want 12 linebackers over a 4-year span?

12 over four years puts you at 9 or ten on the roster. Yes, three a season is reasonable. Only reason to slow down is if you get to the point of red shirting multiple linebackers per class. If they think they have hit on all three in both the 16 and 17 class, then the case for only two this year is strong. We may lose as many as 5 next off season if not sooner if two of the three starters have great years.

Unless one of them looks like Roquan Smith next season or become sack artists, none of them are leaving. LBs don't declare unless they get to the QB.

Sack artists that are declaring but aren't Roquan Smith:
Jerome Baker and his 3.5 sacks?
Malik Jefferson 4 sacks?
Andre Smith and his ZERO sacks on a season that ended early with injury?
Frank Ginda and his 2 sacks?
Where is the line?

2017 class:
Elijah Lee with 1.5
Raekwon McMillan with 2.0
Anthony Walker 2.0

Nobody is saying they should, but there is absolutely a track record for underclassmen linebackers leaving early without being the best linebacker in the country, and without being over prolific "sack artists".

Michael Pinckney (apparently a sack artist) and his 3.5 as a sophomore puts him right in line with all of those guys, none of which are Roquan Smith, just like Pinckney isn't Roquan smith.

We are going to have three multi year starters with nothing left to prove by the end of next season. Their skill sets will be defined, and there will be plenty of tape. Their measurables will be established. Barring either an injury or an overwhelming desire to win something, there is no reason to think any of the three are beyond capable of declaring.

Don't make these stupid statements as if there isn't some possibility.

I think he needs to be an ace in Dade/Broward...and hopefully an LB coach.

I think Richt thought he was hiring his young, energetic, south florida (namely Broward) ace in Rumph...And honestly for recruiting purposes we all though it would happen w Rumph, and can understand why Richt thought so as well. And so far it just hasn't turned out that way (he can change that with Campbell)

Had an excellent 2016 Nike Combine in Miami

Mar 6, 2016 (Nike MiamI)

Steed, Waynmon, 17, LB, Miami Central, FL,.. 6-0(H)..., 221(W)...., 4.71(40)..., 4.33(short shuttle)..., 40(Powerball), 30.6(vertical) , 102.36 (SPARQ).

i take 2 lbs in this class.

I forsee one of our lbs leaving next year...Mccray shouldnt even be here...i would like to stockpile that position..regardless of whats there in 19.

i like proactive recruiting..not reactive. Its the reason they are scrambling around now at DT. Thats ok when u have a Kul a dl coach...who we have at LB coach not sure if he can just get the same production out of guys. our starting 3 lbs were golden recruits.
Actually UGA was in Shaq's top 4 and Pinkney camped with Right at UGA ... I agree that u need to be proactive.. at a minimum 3 deep at every position ... +2Lb. +3DL +2Nics thats 40 schoolies for the D

Any idea what Shaq & Mikes thoughts are on leaving early?

Any of those guys have a chance to overtake Zach or do you think he will bounce back and keep his spot?

Mcloud got better as the year progressed. Played very well vs. Pitt and I thought pretty good in the bowl loss.

Nah he was average at best against Pitt and was terrible the entire season.

you guys are neurotic. we lost how many DL? and you are freaking out of LB's where we are 2 deep easily and just added a potential stud?
DT Depth is the lit match between our toes.. most likely to get injured .. they rotate the most.. I think it's the most important Corp on the team... Bama made it through most of the season - 3 of their best LBs because of their DT depth.

I've never seen a kid who looked more likely to leave early based on their behaviour than Mike Pinckney. Kids who carry extra weight, get in the dog house, and still manage to be your best player at a position are guys who jump ship the second they're able to do so.

really hope pinckney sheds about ten pounds.

would elevate his game to another level and make him a 1st-2nd round potential with a big year or two.

definitely a beast either way but an extra step would go a long way for him and this defense

Nope, I was at the Pitt game and he had a pretty good game. Definitely had some downtimes this year though...So much potential, hope the lightbulb goes on.

If he focuses and takes **** seriously he could be an all timer. He has the potential.

Any idea what Shaq & Mikes thoughts are on leaving early?

I'm sure they both think about realizing their goal of making it to the NFL one day... But I would strongly advise that a premature leap could be costly. There are Pros and Cons and a ton of variables to consider. If Shaq had the same draft advisory as Nort.. I would have strongly advise to stay and better your stock... If I was a coach... I would consider the possibility of all three leaving... How often do you see 4 year starters... I would recruit as they were leaving... its better to have and not need than need and not have... Like our current DT situation.
