D'Onofrio Interviews for Temple - Updated :-/ I haz a sad

You guys do realize that Golden most likely isn't going to hire someone (if Coach D is get the HC job at Temple) that runs a totally different scheme then he runs right?

Why

Because its a scheme Golden believes in and ran himself for the last 11 years (7 as a HC, 4 as a DC). He's turned around 2 defenses running it.

First of all, I don't think Coach D is going any-f'in-where. I was just entertaining the idea.

Secondly, I'd hope Golden isn't that inflexible. If he is, I don't he's going to take us where we want to go. Even a guy like Randy, RANDY SHANNON, experimented outside of a "scheme he believed in and ran himself (with much more "success," mind you). He hired Bill Young, who was philosophically on the other side of his concepts.

Again, don't think Coach D is going anywhere because I don't think he's going to be hired, but I have some outside hope Coach Golden is willing to do anything - even go outside of his comfort zone - to produce effective results.

I know Golden believes he will have success running his defense here, I tend to agree.

Off topic but Shannon and Bill Young went together like oil and water. FWIW, I also don't think Coach D is going anywhere.

The Scheme Bill Young threw at the Gaytors that night was fantastic, IMHO.

Only problem was that the more the season progressed, the more Shannon curbed Bill Young and our defense ended up suffering because of it.

Thats not true at all. Specifically because there was a 5-game winning streak in the middle of the year where the team only gave up more than 20 pts once. Of course the defense got crushed against GT and lost to NC State.

If your assertions are correct, then Shannon helped the defense.

Golden scheme on offense doesn't really mesh with what Fisch has been doing.

What scheme? Golden had never run an offense and has always been a coach on the defensive side of the ball.

Fisch did exactly what Golden told him to this season - run an uptempo offense and try to outscore teams. This already came out a couple of weeks ago.

You hope Golden isn't that inflexible? LOL! I know you're an admin but GD!!!

You do know Golden and Coach D have been building a defensive roster that supports the scheme they're looking for right? And again, why do our stupid fans think the problems on defense are scheme? You think the problem might be the 22 true Sophomores or Freshmen in the two deep that was the problem?

The defense Golden and Coach D are building will monkey fock offenses once it's fully installed with developed talent.

Funny how you mention "even a guy like Randy hired Bill Young" to try and prove your paper thin point. Do you remember Randy allowing Bill to run the defense the way he wanted and kept UF to minimal points scored? Then Randy handcuffed the man which was obvious and the two of them got into hot water with each other because they disagreed on everything and we saw Corch Randy's conservative cover-2 get picked on the rest of the season? Bill Young was here all of 1 season because of that guy Randy who picked a defensive coach with differing opinions on defensive philosophy. That's what we need is a coaching carousel at defense.

How about putting a little faith in Golden knowing what the **** he's doing? Golden was a Defensive Coordinator as is Coach D. They know more about scheme and defensive philosophy than all the so-called know it all's on this board.

Some you talk about why is it so hard to recruit certain players while our fans sit here and bash some of our coaches prematurely. Scheme? GTFOOH! Scheme didn't keep the Temple defense from being nasty as **** and highly rated.

Bill Young sucked here. Like Whipple, very hyped, with a bad result. Was not impressed.

Yes and no. Golden was a TE in Penn State's offense so he knows all about offense and that's why he chose to become more familiar with defense and special teams "he's coached both". There is certainly a scheme Golden wants to run on offense.

Fisch was hired because he designed playbooks for franchises in the NFL and can run virtually any scheme you want to. Fisch doesn't have one set scheme in his mind which was evident by the way our schemes changed from game to game depending on the deficiencies of the defenses we were playing.

That's what happens when a HC tries to hire outside of his comfort zone as LuCane suggests...

See that's what left me scratching my head during several games this year. I always thought Golden was a TE but each week during the game you would hear commentators talking about how Al and D'Onofrio played side by side at LB for JoePa

Golden and Coach D were roommates. Golden was a TE and Coach D was a LB. Also, Golden started his coaching career as Offensive Coordinator at Red Bank Catholic HS in 1993. He knows what he wants to run here scheme wise. He brought in Fisch so he could run whatever he wants to run here with whatever talent he has around him. Fisch is a wizard when it comes to scheme and formation.

"Golden was a three-year (1989–91) letterwinner and tight end for Penn State,[1] where he received the 1991 Ridge Riley Award, given annually to a player who displays excellence in scholarship, sportsmanship, friendship and leadership. As a junior in 1990, Golden played a key role in Penn State's nationally-televised 24–21 upset of #1-ranked Notre Dame at South Bend. His touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter tied the score at 21 as Penn State rallied from a 21–7 deficit. Golden was named captain of the Nittany Lions his senior year and helped lead them to a 42–17 win over University of Tennessee in the 1992 Fiesta Bowl, an 11–2 record, and a #3 ranking in the final 1991 AP Poll."- Wiki

First of all, calm down. You sound really emotional. Considering I've been on the side of telling people to relax about the defense and any defensive staff changes (look up the threads yourself), you're addressing the wrong guy. Secondly, if you think Golden can just run with a rigid plan, you know close to zero about leading any organization - sports or otherwise. He has to be flexible and adjust with what comes up. He has shown that off-the-field and even by adjusting his previous "style" of offense to give the team the best chance to win. I don't see why it'd be a surprise if he does it defensively, if things are not working out.

Hope you've caught your breath and gotten your emotional rant out of the way. Of all people on this board, it was addressed at the one guy who has consistently stuck up for D'Ono (despite the fact he doesn't run the defense I would).

Yeah I have read all of that before as I stated I thought he was a TE but the networks seemed determined that they played LB together.

So because he played TE and coached HS football in the 90s he knows all about scheming an offense in college? He might have a style he would prefer to play but he's not a guy who could call plays at the college level successfully at the moment.

FWIW, a little off topic but I think a lot of people are confused on how much/little that head coaches micro-manage their OCs and DCs.

Wait a second, did PickSix just say that our offensive schemes changed from one game to another? Please provide some examples. What do you even define as a "scheme?"
