DE commit Garvin excited about 2017 class

Lake Worth defensive end Jonathan Garvin committed to Miami a little over a month ago. Garvin’s high school season got off to a blazing start as he recorded seven sacks and an interception against Glades Central (whose QB James Blackman is an FSU commit) in the preseason classic.

The 6-4, 225-pound rush end seems to have taken the next step on the field this season.

“I feel like I’ve improved in every aspect that I needed to,” Garvin said. “I’m trying to be virtually perfect. That’s what my goal is and that’s what my goal has been.”

Despite now garnering some extra attention from opposing offenses, Garvin is prepared to see different looks.

“I practice being double-teamed and getting blocked by the running back. They kept throwing the ball because they wanted to have a passing attack and it made it so easy for me. There still hasn’t really been a team we’ve played that can stop me from getting back there, especially not consistently,” Garvin said.

“They’re running the ball away from me and I still have good stats. I’m doing what I want and what I want is to have a great year,” he added.

Garvin just turned 17 two months ago and believes that he is still growing. He currently stands at 6’4” and weighs around 225 pounds, but he said that he is projected to be as tall as 6-foot-7.

Miami’s early success on the field has caught Garvin’s attention, especially at his future position group at defensive line.

“I’m very excited about them and being able to see the results of their training and field work with Coach Kool. It’s great to see that they’re hungry and determined,” he said.

“When I join them next year and get there with D.J. (Johnson), it’s going to be even more tackles for loss,” Garvin added.

The Lake Worth High School prospect thinks that his future position coach Craig Kuligowksi will have a major impact on him.

“I think he will influence my whole game. He’s going to kick up the instincts when I’m in practice. He’s going to help me with that a lot and he’s going to teach me to distinguish a trick play from a run play or a pass play and be able to react on it a lot faster. Probably more than anything, he will probably help my run-stopping skills,” Garvin explained.

One of Miami’s most recent commitments, Garvin gave his thoughts on the Canes’ 2017 recruiting class.

“It’s just a dominant class. It’s dominant all over. Each player that’s committed is that one person each team is watching on film and saying ‘ok we have to find a way to get away from him.”

When asked if there was any prospect that he wanted to join the class, Garvin answered Booker T. Washington offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort, who is currently committed to the Gators.

SEASON STATS: 39 tackles, 24 TFLs, 5 sacks, 1 blocked field goal, 2 PBU

That **** Joseph Jackson if healthy and a junior will be scary.

Kool probably never had this type of dl talent at his take in recruiting..he must be walking around with a woody...

Though im not a big fan of him right now...Kool was walking around with a woody for Jonathan Ford (DILLARD). I think he sees that type of frame and goes nuts..cause Ford is just a naturally big kid...not even really in the weightroom. Ford will be Richard Mcintosh by year 2.

Kool gonna need to see a doctor if he don't watch out

There's a few players that might warrant a bump in rating, as Steed, Dingle, Edwards are discussed here, but Jon Garvin needing a significant bump is undebatable. It should be automatic by seasons end.

Tracking Miami Commits: Week 6

Some good stuff here. Yes, it appears he had ANOTHER 7 sack performance. D.J. Johnson had 15 tackles, 7 for loss.... Folks, we're getting some real monsters on the D-line.

Side note... Our punter had 148 yards rushing and 2 TDs. ;o)

Tennessee pushing hard for Garvin to flip. He just visited there last week.

Garvin was at Tennessee this past weekend for an official visit to see the Volunteers take on Alabama.

While didn't reveal much on Wednesday when asked during an on-site interview with 247Sports what prompted the last-minute trip to Knoxville, he did acknowledge the fact that the Volunteers are very much a player in his recruitment.

"It was good," Garvin said.

"I was just there for a visit. They are supposed to be by here for my game on Thursday."

Garvin, who is ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 24 strong-side defensive end, was a bit of a relative unknown on the national recruiting scene when he committed to the Hurricanes back in early August, but that is starting to change. The 6-3.5, 222-pound end has totaled 72 tackles (44 for a loss), 16 sacks, five forced fumbles and three blocked kicks through seven games this season.

That in turn has Miami defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski doing what he can to keep Garvin committed and Tennesee's Steve Stripling pushing for the flip.

"Coach Kul has been telling me to enjoy everything," Garvin said. "He was here a couple of months ago to watch me play. He keeps saying to have fun and that it's going to be hard work when I'm there."

Garvin was at Hard Rock Stadium on Sept. 3 for the Hurricanes season opener against Florida A&M. He returned a few weeks later for the annual showdown with Florida State.

"That was nice," Garvin said when asked about the rivalry game. "That trip was really good. I wanted to see how they did and I thought they did well. I honestly think they should have won, but things didn't swing their way."

Garvin originally was planning to sign with Miami or another school on Feb. 1's National Signing Day. That has since changed. He said on Wednesday that he's now on track to graduate in December and enroll early at the school of his choice in January.

"I just finished up a semester with all of my online classes, so it looks like I'm probably going to do that," Garvin said.

Garvin added that the plan, for now, is to take his official visit to Miami in November, although a date hasn't been set. He's ranked as the nation's No. 595 overall prospect and the No. 81 recruit in Florida.

enrolling early helps , fck ten that 49 to 10 beating that he witnessed should help too. That team laid down to Alabama. One thing to lose but another thing to quit . Butch is on borrowed time/ They should of lost to the same team we beat down App state

Over ten of those are sacks as well, dudes an animal. Then you got DJ who averages 7 tackles a game from end and forces a fumble every other game, I think he returned three of em for tds last year, can't wait for these savages to get here.

Oh I know, I mainly mean we put in all the work and then they show up. They stole two recruits that we really needed last year, they need to lock Garvin down. But I think Garvin will be different compared to those two anyway, Byrd really wanted to stick with his old buddy and LW... I mean come on the dude said Go Ducks when he got his offer from us. Kool got this.
