2013 RB Alex Collins from South Plantation was one of the early commitments for this year's recruiting class. There has been a lot of talk about him keeping his options open, but for now he is leading his team to an undefeated 6-0 record, as they defeated Hollywood Hills 18-0 tonight.
"It was a really good win, but we didn't really do what we wanted to, which was put this team away in the beginning. We started out really slow, which is something we have to break out of and come out strong. Defensively we did well because they didn't score a point, but offensively we couldn't really find a flow."
Before the season began, not many people thought the Paladins would have the success they're having.
"It feels good knowing that you have the capability to go undefeated. This team has been together for two years now and everyone knew we had the capability, but outside people didn't give us a chance."
Collins made his decision to attend Miami back in the Spring. A few things helped make that choice an easy one for him at that point.
"I basically made that decision because it's the school I grew up liking. It's close to home and my family will be able to come to my games. That's pretty much why I made that decision."
Despite him sticking by his Miami commitment, Collins has not completely shut down the recruiting process.
"I've been looking at Florida State, Wisconsin, and Florida. I recently took a visit to Wisconsin, it was pretty good. I've just been traveling to see what else is out there."
Collins has an answer to all the rumors about his commitment.
"Everyone is still trying to find out if I am a solid commitment or a soft commitment, but I basically have no explanation for them. I'm committed to Miami, I just like to see what else is out there."
Both Miami and Wisconsin have senior running backs graduating this year, Mike James and Montee Ball.
"It's something that I think about, but every time that somebody leaves, another person comes in. So it's just about working harder than the other person in practice. I just feel that wherever I go, I will outwork that next person to get my carries."
Many 'Canes fans have been salivating at the idea of him and Duke Johnson sharing the backfield in the future.
"I've seen him play this year and I think he's a good running back. It would be a great combination if we play together."
