Class Impact: Malik Curtis to Miami

I don't think it's an either or debate.

It's possible to recruit a CB with athletically ability in HS to play CB in college.

I don't think anyone has an issue with Curtis as an athlete, but he doesn't really project as a Corner on the next level. He has a pretty thin frame & physicality could/will be an issue for him at Corner, which would make him a project for a few years. At WR/KR/PR he can play immediately & make an impact.

Da'Quan Gonzales is an ATH that plays multiple positions, but is primarily a CB, a transition for him wouldn't take as long. Tyrell Raby is a WR/CB ATH too, but has the physicality & technique to go with good size where he projects easy as a CB on the next level.

There's no issue with recruiting athletes at CB, it comes down to the prospect, it's not a one size fits all situation. Every athlete doesn't fit at CB, some do more than others, among the ATH/WR/CB's we've offered Curtis is probably the last one that fits as a corner.

No problem with the take on my part, I like Curtis a lot, just don't see CB in his future. Hopefully it works out & the staff found a diamond in the rough to convert to CB.
Nailed it!

Do coaches really evaluate off highlights? I seriously doubt so. Sure there are a few players where all you need is the first 3-4 plays of their highlight film. But the Malik Curtis's of the world (non high 5-stars) surely are evaluated by tape and not by highlights.

The misconception you see a lot of (not just in this thread, but this thread is a prime example) is that people confuse watching a kids highlights with "watching their tape".

I'm sure our coaches have seen a lot more than 3 plays of Curtis's at cb. Doesn’t make their eval right. But it's their job, they have a bit more time than most of us to watch these kids.

11.1 isn't terrible...

10.8-11.0 by time he graduates. He's a blur on the field that is 6'0 with major return skills. Glad we got this kid.
He's a legit 5-11-6ft?

Throw in what they hear from coaches they trust locally..

How he performed at camps.. 7on7 how was he etc...

Let’s be honest not a lot of kids want to play defense who are as athletic as this kid.. and high school coaches have always put emphasis on the best athletes playing offense(staying fresh) and being playmakers than leaving them solely at say DB

Just because you are a dynamic athlete on the offensive side of the ball doesn’t mean you can’t make an impact on defense.

See corn elder(had one of the sickest highlight tapes on offense) but was our best corner we’ve had at miami in a long time

see malek young
Played primarily offense in highschool but turned into a very good college corner.

clark and dunson are showing promise at corner and we know they were really good offensively in highschool.

same thing can happen with curtis

Yep. First guy that came to mind was PBuch. Terrific athlete (elite track times) who was a game breaker on offense as well.

I posted another thread about Curtis!

I read where a longtime high school talent evaluator said he saw Curtis play CB, and thought he can be a very good CB.

I also heard Ivins say when he watched Curtis play WR he didn’t think he looked natural there, basically just a fast athlete.

I think Curtis would be the 4th best WR in this class as he is not a better WR than Brinson, Smith, or George.

Let Curtis play CB, and be the primary PR and KR.

One of the strangest things is we haven't had a decent KR/PR since Coley/Duke?

This, we can still get the ball in his hands on returns.

None of the guys really played offense like Curtis. He is doing the off season PRIMARILY at wr, camps, etc.

Malek Young and Elder both started at cb in high school.

Malik Curtis can play cb but his upside is more so on offense imo. He looks completely different on offense. Of course you would want Travis Benjamin speed at CB...but what did he do at wr?. Either way im just happy we got the kid committed. Would love to see him in Lashlee's offense as we dont have the guys with his yac ability.

Wasn't Elder a RB?
